Some years ago, I was fairly competent in the C language. I have been
away from it for a while and I am presently interested in learning C++.
I know Bjarne Stroustrup maintains that going from C to C++ is not the
ideal way but there it is!

I'd be grateful for suggestions about books and web pages about learning
C++ under Linux and also for ideas about other newsgroups to post this
question.

A quick question whose answer would be very helpful is: what include
file should I have for cout and cin?

TIA,

Jim.

Here's my story. I have to disks, the first disk has windows installed
and
the second disk has linux installed. I'm running Mandrake 6.0. When I

installed Mandrake, LILO had a problem. So I re-installed windows into
the Master boot record and booted to linux with the boot disk. Now my
boot disk is screwed up and I can't get back to Linux.
I tried downloading the boot.img from Red Hat, but it just tries to do a

re-install of the OS.

Any help would be appreciated.

I found out most or all of the latest laptops/notebooks with integrated
v.90 modems are in fact WinModem. Whether Linux works with WinModem, I
really don't care if it does. I still want the intelligent modem. I'm
gonna shop for a laptop with without integrated modem in it.

If you're root, when you untar files, if they don't exist, they get the
ownership of the original owner. If you're *not* root, they don't get
the original ownership, they're owned by you.

Subject: Forwarding mail message to program?

Howdy all -

I have a Red Hat 6.1/Intel box running Sendmail v.8.9.3-15. I have a
script that I want to read an inbound message and act on its contents.

So, I put the script in /etc/smrsh. Tested from the command line, the
script is executable, and does what it is supposed to do.

Then I add an entry to /etc/aliases that looks like this:

account: |/etc/smrsh/myscript.sh

I run newaliases next.

Unfortunately, when I send an e-mail to the account, I get this:

account... aliased to |/etc/smrsh/myscript.sh
|/etc/smrsh/myscript.sh... Connecting to prog...
|/etc/smrsh/myscript.sh... unknown mailer error 1
/root/dead.letter... Saved message in /root/dead.letter

My /var/log/maillog looks like this:

Mar 10 19:59:48 host sendmail[2152]: TAA02152: from=root, size=47,
class=0, pri=30047, nrcpts=1,
msgid=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, relay=root@localhost
Mar 10 19:59:48 host sendmail[2152]: TAA02152:
to=|/etc/smrsh/myscript.sh, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00,
mailer=prog, stat=unknown mailer error 1

I have dug thru Deja.com, sendmail.org, and yahoo.com. I am missing
something, but I can't figure out what!

Any assistance GREATLY appreciated. If I need to RTFM, please tell me
which FM to R! >grin<

Don't worry about learning C++.
Just try to compile some of your old C programs
using the GNU C++ compiler g++.
Then try to remember all of the things that irritated you about C
and that you think should have been fixed in C++.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

From: Ursa_M <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Samba: NMBD Question
Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 21:12:28 -0500

I was using Samba on RH 5.1 with no problems. I have upgraded to RH 6.1
and am generally pleased with the performance, GNOME, and so forth. I have
Samba working, but some things happen that seem very odd to me.

1. Frequently, every time a Win98 machine boots on the network and at
other times, nmbd tries to restart itself about 30 times. In log.nmb is a
parade of messages of the form:

[2000/03/10 20:47:37, 1] nmbd/nmbd.c:main(684)
   Netbios nameserver version 2.0.5a started.
   Copyright Andrew Tridgell 1994-1998

There are literally thousands of these. Once log.nmb reaches a certain
size there appear on the console a parade of related messages as follows:

[2000/03/10 21:02:52, 0] lib/debug.c:check_log_size(285)
  check_log_size: open of debug file /var/log/samba/log.nmb failed-using
console.
[2000/03/10 21:02:52, 0] lib/pidfile.c:pidfile_create(86)
Error: nmbd is already running. File /var/lock/samba/nmbd.pid exists and
process id 13045 is running.

Can anyone tell me what might be causing this? I am also from the Win98
side occasionally getting "network is busy" messages, but that seems to
have stopped when I put in an interfaces line and only listed the internal
subnet.

I am using the Linux box as a firewall, which works great, and as a Samba
server. While this condition doesn't appear to be catastrophic to the
system, I certainly would like to know how to fix it.

Thanks to all for assistance.

Take care,

Ursa_M

Please just post reply to the group.

Here are the good news ... there is a C++ standard now, pretty cheap
as a PDF file, so there is no C++ under Linux ...

Here are the bad news ... there is no C++ compliant compiler available
for Linux yet ...

Even so, see http://www.accu.org/ for useful book reviews and of course
you are invited to become a member too ;)

Aside from GNU gcc there are Comeau C++ and KAI C++ available for
Linux and as far as GNU gcc is concerned there is an experimental
libstc++ which is more standards compliant but not for production.

So using a different compiler aside installing a seperate one, using
the development version of libstdc++, can be helpful to try things
out too, despite being not a perfect solution.
