Mandrake is good. It's well appointed with applications and has some more

archaic hardware. It has a very slick installer, but no Linux is without
a learning curve. There are two very active mailing lists devoted to
it. However, it should be noted that under the hood, most GNU/Linux is
pretty much the same. Slack uses a different bootup sequence,
Redhat puts things in weird places, Mandrake has this somewhat difficult
to figure security system. If you're a newbie, the ability to learn, read,
and not get frustrated is more important than which distro you pick.

Good question, why dont you look up the meanings of the words democracy

you are a hypocrite on this topic. By the way, Usenet is an

For some unknown reason, root began to refuse to be logged on to my RH
5.2 system. I had two connection as root to each of two consoles.
When I attempted to log on to a third console as root, I was told
(after being certain that there were no typo's) that the password was
incorrect. It simply WAS NOT incorrect. After some jacking around, I
found that I am able to log in as myself and su to root, using the
correct password, and gain root priv's. However, I am still unable to
ACTUALLY log on AS root. What the Dickin's is going on? While su'd to
root, I was able to change the root password (ie: "passwd root , etc.
etc. - all tokens successfully updated") but that didn't help.
Whatever new password I assign can be used to su to root, but will not
allow root, proper, to log on. I could sure use some help.

Try it with your regular sound card drivers... I had this same problem
before, what I did to fix it was this.

1. Open xmms.
2. Place your cursor over xmms and press Cntrl+P.
3. Under the Audio I/O Plugins tab, select MPEG Layer, then click
'Configure' [ make sure the plugin is enabled as well ].
4. Try setting decoder resolution to '8 bit'.
5. Try playing another mp3.

If the above instructions do not work, you may email me at the address
in my signature. The slowness you speak of is the EXACT same problem
I had before, and the above is what I did to fix it.

Sounds like it's caused by over-clocking.

Over-clocking is not something that you want if you want a
stable machine.

Run your own server (eg, leafnode or whatever), feed it from the
university's nntp server and set your own expire time.

Try either of these commands

gzip -cd pathcXX.gz | patch -p0

or store the patch in /usr/src directory, and from the /usr/src

Check your motherboard manual. For many boards, you have to put the
largest DIMM in slot 0, and progressively smaller ones in slots
1,2,.... Also, you may have a bad DIMM, expecially if you bought it
cheaply from a fly-by-nighter. There's a program called memtest86
(do a search on http://freshmeat.net/ ) that will do extensive memory
checking; try that out.

Buy more RAM and spend $100 on VMWare. This *will* work, and it will take
the least time and effort on your part. It will cost you money,
naturally.

Alternatively, check out http://winehq.com/ although this requires a lot
more tweaking and may not play "the usual games" without much fiddling.
Try to find Linux equivalents for the "usual Lose9x games"; a lot of them
are free and those that aren't (Quake 3, Railroad Tycoon, Myth 2) support
the Linux game-porting effort and give companies reason to port their
games to Linux when you buy them.

Yes. See its man page.

The command
$ cd /usr/src/linux; zcat patch-2.3.21.gz | patch -p1
will turn the 2.3.20 source code into the 2.3.21 source code,
provided that the former is installed in /usr/src/linux.

There are efforts ongoing on SQL front ends on both GNOME and KDE
fronts, but they're probably not quite what you're looking for.

The nearest thing to what you want is very likely Borland Paradox,
which is part of the "Corel Office Deluxe" package. I'm interested in
trying it out, but haven't done so yet, so I can't guarantee
suitability.

I'm presuming what you want is:
 - GUIed front end
 - Some form of QBE (Query By Example) reporting
 - Some form of reporting tool
