had lilo 3 boot : rh6/ntf(ntfs) /win98(fat32)
Installed win2k over nt. Now linux goes into maintenance mode complaining
about bad magic numbers (??)
Any pointers / info on what the '750MB bloatware patch to NT4' might have
done?
I would like all 3 to coexist, if that is at all possible.
Why do I need NT5 ? FAT32 support . Then I can merge the 1GIG fat16 and
2GIG fat 32 logicals into one 3GIG logical. and access then from all 3 os'es
( 98,nt, linux)
Also, would anyone know how 'dangerous' it is for w2k to be installed on the
same partition as 98 ? Experiences, warnings, welcome...

joseph

You have to have a file, /etc/sysconfig/sound, in order for KDE to start
up its sound daemon. Check out the script file /usr/bin/startkde.

Is "Power Off on Shutdown" a kernel configuration option or linuxconf or

You may find most of them by doing a search on "unix commands" using
search engines like http://www. infoseek.com
Take a look at http://www.mesagroup.com/comnds1.htm
as an example of such command lists.

The multi-network thing makes it tricky, but I think I can see how it can be
done: Most of it is straightforward, except for the dual boot machine.
I can't imagine a product to do this at this time, but it should be quite
easy to script in bourne shell. (Actually, it grabs me as an interesting
project!). Let me know how it goes. I am quite interested.
Script it all, and use each OS's native utilities to back up their OS's, or
Tar+gz...whichever.
For the dual boot machine, have your script first try to mount it using Samba..
if that fails, try to mount it using NFS... Then backup the mounted directory.
It can be administrated and kicked off from a single machine by using rsh,
provided you have few, trusted users, and are firewalled in. Otherwise,
there are other methods for the secure exection of files over a network
(SSH allows this, no? Anyone?)

Couuld someone please help me with the following. I have been
trying to get Hylafax to send a fax, my problem is when ever I try to
send a fax I get a error reading
Failed to submit job 285: Unable to open scheduler FIFO: No such file
or dir.
Also, if I do a #netstat -s , I get the error
HylaFAX scheduler on <our domain name>: Not Running
Modem ttyS0 : running and idle
Modem ttyS1: running and idle
I have found in the FAQ that this is caused by a problem with
the FIFO special file in spooling area either being damaged or not
there ( I can't find it). First I don't know where the spooling are
is, because someone else installed and set this up. Second, The only
file I can find that has the name FIFO is in a dir called
/var/spool/fax, and its a named pipe with the name FIFO.ttyS0 and
FIFO.ttyS1. They state to run the command # faxquit, which is supposed
to stop the daemon faxq, and then restart the daemon faxq, The program
faxq is supposed to recreate the FIFO file if it's missing. This did
not work for me.
Would anyone have any Idea what I need to do to fix this.
Also, Hylafax is receiving fax's on the two tty's

Is there _any_ version of gnucash that does not require certain files
from Motif (or LessTif)? I loaded LessTif in order to have
"libXm.so.1" but have not had luck getting the right version, the
right associations, the right symbolic links, etc.

the server. The installation is very simple, and, as a benefit, you'll also get some

Subject: Listserv/Procmail question
Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 15:57:39 GMT
Id like to hear some comments on the following
We have an application within our network that needs
to send emails with attached PDFs to many clients.
As this app grows, the load on our firewall is
increasing to the point where its becoming a problem.
These messages, and the PDFs, are usually the same message
just sent many times. Wed like to be able to just send one
copy of each message through the firewall and have it expanded
on the other side. We were thinking of either:
No. 1) Putting a mail listserver on the other side of the firewall
No. 2) Embedding the list of recipients in the text of the message,
separated by a flag string, and then having a server on the
other side of the firewall extract the recipients and use that
as a mail list.
The reason were considering #2 is that there would
be a great many mail lists, and theyre going to be very dynamic,
changing daily, so keeping the listserver in sync through the firewall
is an open issue. Right now the mail addresses are kept in a
MS SQL server 6.5 database.
Anyone have any experience with this issue, have any platform
or listserver software suggestions for the mail/listserver, or any
other ideas? We were thinking Linux or Solaris running some type
of listserver (majordomo, etc.) or, for the embedded recipient
idea, maybe procmail tied to some perl scripts.
Any insights or common experience is greatly appreciated,
and no this is NOT a spam setup, these are existing clients who want
these emails/PDFs on a timely basis! :^)
Thanks!

try running Sax without gpm being enabled... I seem to remember from somewhere that
some mouse protocols / x-server combinations have a problem if GPM is running.
I don't remember the command off the top of my head but man gpm should get it for you.

This one is simpler to solve... hold down the ALT key while clicking on the rpm and it
will prompt you to save it to disk.
(this is actually a windows "file association" problem more than a netscape problem.

Thanks for the tip. I did finnally get gtk+ to build with the new glib.
However, I did do one extra step. I had to copy glib_config from
/usr/local/bin to /usr/bin (maybe /bin It was where the old one was located
the first time) then added the /usr/local/lib to the ld.so.conf. Checked
with ldconfig and wow it was showed up.
I did however find the RPM for this package ( same thread next message) so
I think I am going to install the RPM. But, I would like to know what is
the proper why of compiling/installing? During the ./configure or make is
where something I can set the make the resulting point to the right spot and
put itself there? Does the /usr/local directory mirror where the files have
to be moved?
I know I should use the RPM, but I like the bear root knowledge Just In

Probably you wil have to unmount the running disk. Take it out. Put in
another. Mount the new disk. Removable disks are considered by Linux quite
the same as floppy disks and CD-rom disks.

Are you talking about a user cron file or the system cron file? Isn't it
different formats for these two types of cron files? (I'm sorry, but I

I am a newbie so that this information for what you think it's worth ;)
I had the same problem installing my 3 linksys 10/100 card on to a Linux
(RH) box. ( not all three at once just I had 2 on 2 machines and got
another to pop into the Linux box) . Anywho, It seems all three cards had 3
different chipsets. There were 2 older ones which were tulip divers but the
third and newest one has a different (unknown) chipset. Check the card for
a Rev 2.1 or so I think. I dont think I could get Linux to find the card
either. It doesnt even like cohabitating with an old card (different
chipset) on a Win98 machine. So I spent an afternoon swapping the cards
around till I found a proper config.
So to make a long winded and confusing explanation short. I think linksys
is using a different chipset on there newer ethernet cards which Linux cant
detect.
There is one more note. Prior to 6.0 (or so, maybe 6.1) Tulip chipsets
were not supported in Linux.
Hope this helps some to unravel the mysteries of the undetected network
card.

The isofs module used to apply the TZ correction with the wrong

Don't know if that is still the case with current kernel version.

Both Linux and MySQL will do but you might want to change to another
solution. If you dump the images on the linux filesystem and give them
a good name (product_id or something like that) it will be a lot
quicker.

But how does one tell Linux to read the new geometry, etc?

Use 'man -l filename' to format and display a file in the local directory.
