Then I misunderstood. Sorry. The "ambiguous I/O redirect" message
only occurs for me when duplicating file handles. If the poster was
referring to the line continuation, which is the shell's
end-of-command-line sequence, then I think that's perfectly normal
behavior.

I think this is only for marketting purposes. I have cable modem and
trying to download something from Red Hat since Jun. I was not successful
so far. They say it is free but they are not creating hardware environment
for people that they can download. They are simply forcing you to buy the
product.

Hi,

Using X-WIndows on Redhat linux 6.2, it is currently configured at 640 x
480. My card and monitor can definitely support higher resolutions and
I find that many parts of windows are off the visible screen. The
problem is, I can't find where to change the screen resolution. Can
someone point the way please?

Thanks,
Don

I installed Mandrake 7.2 beta. It boots and installs directly from the CD.
Set your machine's bios to boot from CD before IDE0.
Use partition sizing tool to change partitions size and allocate 3GB of
unused space for Linux (it is advised that you'll have this as a primary
partition in the 1st 8GB of the disk).
Place the 1st CD in the CD drive and restart the machine.
Follow the menues and select Expert mode, as the partitioning tool may have
to be instructed to use that free space that you reserved for linux partition

Good luck

It is an IPSec protocol. I've installed VTUN, but I'm not sure how to set it

Close xwindows, and in a vterm (log in as root) run setup > X
configuration. There are many other ways but I find this easiest. If
your monitor frequency is not listed, you can edit the values in
/etc/X11/XF86Config; just get close in the setup menu.

Sorry, I'm running RH 6.2, pretty much as it came out of the box, though
I've upgraded some things, and installed a few more. (I've checked all
RPMs that I thought could be the cause of the problem, but they were

Actually, here's the info that www.ufaz.org gives me about my system:

I believe this is what the latest linuxconf package does.
Check the processes that are started when you boot by doing
/sbin/chkconfig --list
You can prevent such a process from starting by using
/sbin/chkconfig --del

Subject: NEED HELP w/ Linux install and X Server setup on Laptop...
Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 11:28:03 -0500

I have an HP Pavilion N3250 Notebook.

   AMD K6/2 475MHz
   6.0GB Harddrive
   12.1 Inch SVGA TFT Display
Trident Cyberblade I7 AGP 3D Graphics.

I am installing Mandrake 7.1 using lnx4win because I don't want to
remove Windows. I was able to install it and get it running but I wasn't
able to get the X Server running. I found a reference on how an N3270
(which has the same video chipset, just a larger display) was setup at:
http://vorpal.nebrwesleyan.edu/~mcclung/hp3270.html.

I read that I need to use the Frame Buffer as in the way the N3270 uses
it. I tried using the svga X Server but couldn't come up with any
combinations of video/monitor that worked so I then tried the Frame
Buffer. But, I didn't have a XF86_FBDev in /usr/X11R6/bin. I only had
XF86_SVGA and XF86_VGA16. So I download an XF68_FBDev (yes, it says XF68
not XF86, why?? I don't know, does anyone know why?) and tried that. But
I got this error:

unable to open device /dev/fb0 (no such device)

I also read that XF86_FBDev comes with xfree86 3.3.6, which comes in
Mandrake 7.1 (correct me if I'm wrong). So, does this get installed
normally or do I have to specify it to get installed when I run lnx4win
(drake)?

So, to sum it up, here's my questions/needs:

What to I need to have installed when I install Linux on a laptop
(specifically XF86_FBDev)?

How do I setup the X Server? Do I use the Frame Buffer? How do I
install the Frame Buffer?

What do I need in my XF86Config file? (There's an XF86Config file in
the above web page for use with FBDev)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx,
Brandon

I have both these cards on my system, and the test3dfx program completes
normally.
Now, I tried the NVIDIA 0.95 drivers ( kernel as well as the X driver ), and
it still kept telling me that some pci header file needs to be updated .
note that I installed X from tarballs of the 4.0.1 binaries , on to a RH 6.0
( X 3.3.3) system.

When I try to use the glide driver for X, it crashes out with a signal 11.
Of note is that even though I have specified the 3dfx card using the busID,
the server latches on to the primary renderer which is not what the glide
driver is ment for.

Has any one been able to get the XServer to run *only* on a secondary card ?
like a voodoo 2 ?

There are different ways, and presumably others will offer other solutions.
My preferred way is to do everything with XF86Setup, if your distribution
has it. It's a tool that you run as root from the command line and it
walks you through selecting mouse, keyboard (usually the defaults), video
card, monitor horiz and vert frequencies, and finally modes! If your
question is how to switch modes (i.e. 640x480 to 1024x768) while in
an X-window, use [CTRL ALT +] or [CTRL ALT -] (hold down the 3 keys in
brackets simultaneously).

find one that has the ISOs for 7.0 on it... and everyone else is correct,
the redhat ftp is toast... hopefully they have some sort of priority setup
for their mirrors, or they send them CDs (or something) so that people won't
be blocking the mirrors' ability to grab the stuff...

Most sites have a "you are user xxx out of xxx allowed on this server"...
does anyone know if ftp.redhat.com has a similar welcome message?

(Actually, while I'm saying that, how does one go about adding a message
like that to their server?)

It did. I'm able to mount all my partitions when I boot with a rescue disk,
I've looked at files like fstab, mtab and inittab, but they all look OK
tome.

> You may have to use the boot floppy to do a back-up of your user files

User files are on a separate partition that seems to be intact, I still hope
to save my system but don't know, where to look. The kernel loads, so maybe
some inits are shot? Any ideas, it hangs just after "remounting root
filesystem in rw mode" (it completes this one though displaying OK). I
fsck'd all the partitions from the rescue floppy, but it didn't help.

bin is short for binary. Make sure the executable flag is set ( chmod
a+x filename.bin ) then execute the file by changing to its directory
and typing "./filename.bin" (without the quotes)

Lopster is working great for me. Really good GTK-based napster

supports everything that napster and napigator have. Tried it once,

Depends on what you are backing up, what is available to you, and how much
data you need to backup.

Generally, tape is very good if you have large amounts of data. (i.e. Multi
GBs).......However, tape does take a long time for backups and is not as
convient a medium as a zip disk or cd. Backing up to CD is nice and quick as
long as you don't have a huge amount of data. Spanning multiple CDs can get
rather annoying.

Basically, if you just need to back up under 650 MB, then go for something
like a CD writer. Cheap storage and rather reliable. You can find various cd
recording software included with distro's, or on the net
( www.freshmeat.net ). You can even set it to auto run the backup with CRON.
However, if you are looking at a lot of data to backup, then CDs are not
gonna work out very well. Sony makes some nice tape drives as well as HP.
With tape though, the more a tape holds, the more you will pay, and it can
get rather expensive. Again, there is plenty of nice utilities/software
available on www.freshmeat.net for this..........

One way I work around this, is to go to www.rpmfind.net and search for the
package I want to install. It will then list all the required packages
needed by this package. I then check my system to see what packages I have
installed and what I need and download everything. Not something you can do
