Hello.
Would very-much appreciate any "straight-up" advice, from any
benevolent/generous Linux users, that might bring my subject-printer to
life!
Cannot get my HP LaserJet 5L b/w printer locally configured properly.
"Goes through the motions", but output pages are completely blank; no
printed chars. whatsoever.
I am a Linux newbie, with SuSE Linux 6.3 installed on my pc (has an AMD
K6-2 450MHz with 32MB PC100 SDRAM and a 4.3GB UDMA ATA/33 hard drive).
I've attempted configurations via YaST, and apsfilter. I've setup as a
device at /dev/lp0 and /dev/lp1 (... separately; not both active
configs., at same time). Printer drivers attempted thusfar, as a
'Postcript'-type printer, include ljet4; as an 'Other'-type printer,
include (? spelling not necessarily correct on my part. Sorry!):
ljet5gray, ljet5mono, ljet4mono, ljet4gray, pxlmono, pxlgray,
ljet4Lgray, ljet4Lmono, lj4dith.
However, upon command 'tunelp /dev/lp0' (altern. 'tunelp /dev/lp1'), I
get the following stdout: "/dev/lp0 [sic. /dev/lp1] using IRQ -1."
When I attempt to data-print directly to my HP LaserJet 5L, via command
'cat /var/log/boot.msg > /dev/lp0 [sic. cat /var/log/boot.msg >
/dev/lp1]", my HP LaserJet 5L does process, ...but again, all output
pages are blank pages. What am I doing wrong?
Sincerely,
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Personal experience, along with testemonials in these newsgroups.

As I mentioned earlier, the last time I tried SuSE's upgrade procedure, my
Linux installation grew by several hundred megs, and system performance went
straight down the tube. When I re-installed from scratch, performance improved
and the system took up far less HDD space.

Oh? So you're saying that the configuration of a Linux application isn't valid
in a Linux newsgroup, and the configuration of an OS/2 application isn't valid
in an OS/2 newsgroup?

BTW - what, exactly, does "misc" stand for in the newsgroup titles?

Please, if you're going to respond, try to actually respond rather than
patronize and incite flame wars. If you believe I'm in the wrong group, why
not suggest another newsgroup for follow-up? Why not set the follow-up to

Here I was thinking the comp.* groups were somehow different than the alt.*

indeed, becoming a worthless cesspool of hatred and oneupmanship.

Don't bother responding. You've already proven not to be worth my time.

I don't really have that problem, although I have seen that the S3VIRGE drivers
have been updated, and will (apparently) only work with a new(er) version of
X11. I'm also running into problems where a lot of software is now only being
updated for the Glibc2 systems, and I've got Glibc1.2 here.

Rather than try to upgrade everything one at a time, I'd like to just upgrade
the entire she-bang.

>And of course 6.4 is about to come out. What a dilema!

Yeah.. You're telling me! I just know that as soon as I install 6.3, 6.4 will
hit their site in ISO format. {groan}

Why must development go faster than me? :>

I think that's the way I'm going to go. I plan on leaving my /home partition
alone, so that should be a problem. Now just to figure out what I have on my
/ partition that I should back-up, and I just might give the 6.0-6.3 upgrade
a try.

If it doesn't work - I'll have my backup, and I guess I'll just re-install
v6.3 from scratch. {shrug}

Adobe has recently posted a generic PS driver for MS boxes. I've been
using it for a little while; it seems to avoid a lot of the crappy PS
generation out there.

You could always make a policy that you only support PS generated with
this driver only.

No, outside of X you can use vlock (I don't know about rpms, though) or you can
run everything through a program called screen and then press Ctrl-A X to lock.
You probably have screen installed already, it's in an rpm called screen.

vlock can probably be found at freshmeat.net.

Reboot? The only time you ever have to reboot Linux is when you
recompile the core part of the kernel.

You can switch to runlevel 3 and then back to 5 (or the equivalents in
another distribution) which is much quicker.

Rebooting seems to be a knee-jerk reaction from Windows people. In
fact, on computers I manage rebooting often makes the problem worse,
as it is normally a while before I get around to writing scripts to get
daemons I install to start automatically.

All I have ever done is upgrade after the initial install, using RH and
it works fine, or upgrade the packages you want by hand. reinstalling

There is no glibc-2.0 version of the JDK-1.2.2.

The recommened solution is to use glibc-2.1.3 with JDK-1.2.2-RC4 and
the Inprise JIT compiler. The reason for this is that our last
glibc-2.0 release was JDK-1.2-prev2 which is out-dated and had
several bugs. Also, glibc-2.1.2 and glibc-2.1.3 fixed several glibc
bugs that made the JDK instable.

Yes and no. Yes, you can use 1.2.2 with netscape if you install the
Java Plug-In. No, the plug-in won't get used for all applets, it only
works with pages that have been modified for the plug-in.

No, your glibc is too old. 1.2.2 needs glibc-2.1.2 or better.

What is Ez-Bios, are you using some sort of 3rd party software to access
your large hard drive? If so, that is your problem. Linux may be able to
read such drives, but cannot install on them.

If there is some way to remove Ez-Bios, Linux can use drives that are
larger than the system BIOS recognizes. I don't know any details except
that you would likely need a primary /boot partition (16 meg) below cyl
1024 within the part that your BIOS can see.

If you have another drive, you might try installing LILO on that, but
don't ask me how risky it would be to put LILO in the MBR of the Ez-Bios
1st drive. But you could use a boot floppy or something like loadlin to
boot Linux on a different drive from DOS.

It depends. Your machine may need a hostname that apache can find in DNS
or /etc/hosts, but there is a way around that. However, for anyone to
find your machine from the internet, they would either need to know the IP
that you are connected to the internet with, or the world resolvable
hostname of that IP (if there is one).

This is easy if you have a static internet IP and hostname. If you have a
dynamic IP, you could either talk to your ISP or look into 3rd party DNS.

Access restrictions can easily be done with server directives. For
example the following (using a bogus or local IP in this example) would
only allow access from a particular IP:

order deny,allow
deny from all
allow for 192.168.1.20

Hi,

I'm not that familiar with SuSE's setup, but I do know what your problem
is. You do need the filter to send your printer, Otherwise you will get
exactly what you are seeing when you do the cat file > /dev/lpx.

Your problem in a nutshell is that the filter needs to be told to send an
additional Carriage Return after every line to your printer so that the
printer will start each line at the beginning, not at the position the
last line left it on the previous line. Since that line position is
beyond the area your printer can print, the printer merely spaces up a
line without printing anything.

I'm not sure what you would need to specify to your SuSE printer
configuration tool, but in RedHat's printtool, you would check the 'fix
stairstepping text' box. I tried looking into my filter and printcap
files and didn't find any options there that told the filter to generate
this extra CR per line.

Good Luck.

Check what your default gateway and device is set to. If your ISP has given
you a gateway setting, then your default gateway parameter should be that
value, Otherwise it should be blank. More importantly is that your Default
Gateway device should be something like ppp0. I suspect otherwise that if this
value wasn't specified, that your default gateway device is probably set to
your ethernet card, so that even though you're connected to your ISP, your
system is still looking for data from your ethernet device, not your modem.

Good Luck.
