Are you trying to install the rpm or start the dhcpd daemon? Have you

Hello:
I had this same exact problem using both red hat 7.0 and red hat
7.1 on an HP Vectra Pentium 166 MMX. Corel Linux shut down and powered
off correctly though, so I knew it was red hat's doing. :-)
Anyway, you have to recompile the kernel, and under Advanced Power
Management, there is an option to "use real mode BIOS to shutdown" or
something like that (first 4 words there for sure); enable it.
On my particular system, the 2.4.2 kernel that came with red hat did not
work even with that option enabled, but it does now that I installed the
2.4.5 kernel. Try it with 2.4.4, but try the newly released 2.4.5 if it
doesn't work. Judging from what you say, however, 2.4.4 will probably
work on your system as long as you enable this option.
Cross posted to four newsgroups... can't wait for the porn mail to come
in. :-)
Ciao!

Claus,
You can do it with fetchmail.
Like so in your .fetchmailrc (this one gets its passwwords from a
.netrc):
poll pop.zonnet.nl user "<some_user>" is "<local_user>" here
poll pop.xs4all.nl user "<some_user>" is "<local_user>" here
poll pop.hccnet.nl user "<some_user>" is "<local_user>" here
The local user is the login of the user, no need for domain.
It's all in the manual...

I am running rh linux 7.1 I have a zip disk that a friend of mine put
some
graphic files on for me. However the zip disk was done on a zip disk
machine. What I would like to do is mount the disc on the linux box and
transfer the files to the box. However each time I attempt to mount
the file system it is telling me that it is an incorrect type.
The following command is the exact command I am entering (mount -t hfs
/dev/hdc /mnt/zip100.0) I have no problems seeing windows formatted zip
disc but I cannot get this mac zip disc mounted at all. I have even
looked in /proc/filesystems and I don't see hfs listed. However when I
looked at the man page for mount and hfs is a valid type for the -t
argument.
Can you please direct me to anyway that I can properly view the contents
of a mac formatted disc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Xfree vs Sis chipset -- gnome vs kde
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 27 May 2001 23:27:46 -0500
I was working on some machines last week that had built-in video adapters
using Sis930 chipset. They seemed to be recognized by the RH 7.1 installer
okay and Xconfigurator seemed to set up the monitor timings (for a Compaq
monitor) okay. (The server in question was the XFree 3.3.6 SVGA server.)
But some users wanted to use kde whereas others wanted
gnome. The kde users were able to hang-up the machines by "marking" the
root window several times with the mouse (left-click and drag a selection
box). After a few times, the machine would hang up, no keyboard, and only
power-off switch would reboot. Those using gnome could not produce the
problem. I presume this is a "bug" in the Xserver/window-manager. But I'm
surprised that the kernel gets hung. I thought this wasn't supposed to happen
on a unix system.

Subject: Desktop Environments
Date: Mon, 28 May 2001 00:14:26 -0400
I have a couple of questions about desktop environments and stuff (I'm using
RedHat 7.0):
[1] What is the relationship between GNOME and the desktop environments
featured on themes.org (afterstep, blackbox, enlightenment, fvwm, gtk+,
icewm, kde, litestep, sawfish & wm)? Or is GNOME just another desktop
environment?
[2] What is the difference between all the desktop environments described
above? Is it simply that they draw and organize window and desktop elements
differently?
[3] I'm trying to install KDE 2.1.1 and I have downloaded all the binary
RPMs (33 files in all) needed for install. I have no idea where to start for
installation (can't find install notes anywhere). Is it a good idea to use
the command statement, <rpm -Uvh --nodeps *.i386.rpm>, to install KDE 2.1.1?
If so, is it okay to do this for all other programs I need to install with a
lot of RPMs in the install directory?
[4] I just installed some other desktop environments (afterstep, blackbox &
icewm). How do I switch to use them? Is it suppose to be an option under the
"Session" menu at the login screen? If so, I don't see them. What did I do
wrong? (I installed icewm & blackbox with source code (tar.gz) and afterstep
with binary RPM (i386.rpm))
Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,

If you have enough hard disk space install KDE too. I am running both
Gnome and KDE.
Many KDE programs will work under Gnome and visa versa.
My opinion is to get both. Both are improving quite quickly.
Picking one over the other is like picking which children is your
favorite. Gnome and KDE both have
their strengths and weakness. Over time, both of their weakness will go
away.

Hum..are you, by any chance, small, green and warty, and live
under a bridge? or is it that Gates has gotten an AOL account?
In any case this sounds like a troll to ME
I would also suggest that if you are having that much trouble
with getting Linux to install, perhaps you should try another
distribution (I would suggest SUSE...it seems almost idiot-proof [but
don't take that personally]). It may be that the distribution you are
using is slightly less user friendly than you need.

I am running RH 7.1. The power went out at my house and my Linux system
went down the hard way. When I started the system back up after the power
came back on I got the following error msg.:
Checking Root filesystem
/ contains a file system with errors, check forced
/:
UNATTACHED inode 24577
/: unexpected inconsistency; RUN fsck manually.
(i.e., without -a or -p options)
*** An error occurred during the file system check.

*** when you leave the shell.
Give ROOT password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal startup):
After I type in the ROOT password I get a command prompt saying "filesystem
#1". When I type "fsck" the command prompt changes to "filesystem #2". I
repeated this all the way to "filesystem #250". That's where I stopped. As
far as I know, it would have gone on forever!
When I run the "shutdown -h now" command and restart my system I get the
same problem. Anyone know how I can get my system back up and running?
Thanks for any and all help.

I'm running RedHat Linux 7.0 (kernel version 2.2.16-22) and I'm trying to

card. After typing <make config>, I get a error message saying:

I download several source kernels (from 2.2.xx to 2.4.5) from kernel.org.
What do I do now?
Do I install the latest stable kernel source (2.4.5) and run <make config>

Can someone tell me the instructions step by step including the necessary

This stuff runs on Redhat too.
You may get your copy at the following sites:
