I put redhat 6.0 on a 486 dx4 100
16mb ram 300 hd + 80 for a swap file.

this ran gnome and enlightenment until the 300 hd died.
also apachie, samba,ftp server.

this barly fit and barley run. but with a smaller windowmanager
(memory wise) it would be better.

Subject: CD-RW troubles in linux
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 03:14:31 GMT

I posted earlier to this newsgroup and got this reply in my e-mail.
The helpful linux user asked me to post it if this was my problem :

Hi "gte336p"

I'm a new Linux user and just got Mandrake 7 via download 3 days ago.
I almost gave up on it because of the problem you mentioned in the
comp.os.linux.misc forum. I searched for the answer and found your
question. You've probably already read "John's" response. It helped me,
but my computer wasn't recognizing my Mitsubishi CD-RW drive as an ATAPI
to SCSI drive.

Here's what I did:

In the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit file, I added

insmod ide-scsi

just before the 'action "mounting proc filesystem" ... line', then saved
it.

Then when I reboot, Mandrake recognizes my drive as an IDE to SCSI
drive. John's instructions then worked perfectly. Make sure you change
the properties of your CDROM link file on each desktop to reference
/mnt/sr0. It should work.

I've been able to mount my CD's, and use Xcdroast to write CD's. I've
also added a little menu item to allow erasing of the CD-RW's. I can
help you with that if you'd like.

I've been using computers since 1984, but only started experimenting
with Linux this year, so I'm pretty much in the dark. I might have to
buy a book!.

Please let me know if this helps, and post it to the newsgroup if you
think it might help others.

Use the linux fdisk to delete the linux partitions. I have also used the
boot disk and gone through the install to the point of partitioning,
then delete all linux partitions and choose the back button be sure to
save the changes when asked. then reboot and install other OS.

You can try parted, the gnu partition editor, the latest version of
which was just released. Check out the gnu website or freshmeat. I
used an older version, and it worked fine for me. The documentation
left a little to be desired, but that's half the fun.

BTW, some have said that parted is only for the brave and/or foolish.
It comes with no warranty, so back up your data...

maybe your problem is that startx is all lowercase. but to start the
components seperately, run xinit and in the terminal run the window
manager of your choice.

hope that helps

Ok, I recompiled my kernel without PnP support. I still get the same
error. There are no modules loaded when I try to modprobe emu10k1.
soundocre is loaded fine, but emu10k1 is still unhappy =(.

The mail program is setuid, and it's owned by some user other than
you (probably root). You can either use xhost to let anyone local
run X programs, or chown the mailer to be owned by you.

Look at "man xhost" and "man chown". For info on setuid files,
"man chmod".

Go to YaST -> System Admin -> Edit config file and search for PCMCIA in that

It's good to look through that anyway, 'cos you might find other things that

You need to activate the rescue system. Boot from CD1 (or the Boot floppy if
you can't boot from CD), and go through the install process until you get to
the menu with "Start rescue system".

Once in, mount the root filesystem on mnt, and you can then edit your
/etc/shadow (/mnt/etc/shadow in this case) to get rid of the root password.

Then umount, reboot, and you should be able to get back in as root by just
pressing enter.

Because you have 6 virtual terminals running.
Try pressing <ALT> <F1> thru <F6>. You get 6 login prompts.
(Very usefull, I usually have 4 or 5 open at once)

If you're in X, you need to press <CTRL> along with the <ALT> <Fn> to get
out of X.

A music player applet included in Communicator 4.7X. Find it under the

That's NOT how mkisofs works. mkisofs essentially takes a snapshot of one
or more directory trees, then writes that snapshot out into an iso9660
filesystem image. You can't do what you described because the iso9660
filesystem doesn't actually support write operations! Weird, and
nitpicky, but the thing was designed as a minimal filesystem for CD-ROMs,
which you can't write to anyway.

You may have this confused with the way you create a compressed filesystem
image.  (dd if=/dev/zero of=ramdisk bs=1k count=3072 ; mke2fs ramdisk ;
mount ramdisk /mnt/other -o loop ; cp BLAH /mnt/other ; umount /mnt/other
; gzip -9 ramdisk)

well I'm pretty new to linux... but when I first boot my computer it lists
the information of my video card and pci modem using IRQ 11.... so may be
it is lying to me if this is not possible. all I know that my modem works
in windoze 98 just fine and linux (caldera) can't even find the thing (I'm
running a dual boot system). so maybe the problem resides in something
else. kppp does its modem query and finds something from the symbolic link
dev/modem ... but it does not return any ATI commands.... so I'm lost....

thanks for the insight though

freewwweb.com (or above URL with less w's) works fine with Linux or any
other OS, which is surprising, since they use snap/NBCi (msnbc) for their
home pages. All you have to do is use normal PAP authentication and
point your browser at their home page. They also have mail and news. I
have a local ISP, so it came in handy for connecting from Plymouth, WI or
Califoria when traveling.

I do know that unless the group that promised to do so manages to
create a new set of driver software, none of the Apple PC PCI cards will
absolutely NOT operate in any Mac OS version >8.1. I've got one
gathering dust for just that reason. If you have a fast enough Mac,

It'll probably run faster than the Apple card now anyway.
