"Online"?

Yes it it possible to do a binary patch to a GNU/Linux kernel. However,
since GNU/Linux is licensed under the GPL
(<URL:http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html>) you won't ever need to do a
binary patch, you just patch the source and recompile.

If you use windows just type at the dos prompt "fdisk /mbr"
This should make fdisk write the windows boot sector to master boot record.
The stupid thing is if you do a fdisk /? it tells you nothing of this flag but
it is there I have used it myself.
I at lest think it is "/" and not "\" you use to give flags in dos? It was so
long time ago right now.

Hi,

I've compiled and installed rxvt 2.7.3 in my RedHat 5.2. If I
open text file in big5 code using some console-based editor (like pico),
rxvt can display chinese. However, when I use tin to browse through some
chinese newsgroups, all chinese characters change strange "??" characters,
although I can view the chinese description of the newsgroup before
browsing into the newsgroup. How to solve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

But somehow the sound power out of the third jack is rather weak
compared to my old SB AWE 64. Maybe it's the mixer setting,
but does anyone else also observe this 'weak sound' prblem?
I'm on
Redhat 6.1, kernel 2.3.99-pre3,
emu10k1 sound module compiled in from opensource.creative.com
Asus p3v4x (via apollo pro 133a chipset) mobo

It'd be nice if there's something similiar to Windows' "live-ware"
for linux. maybe i'm asking too much..

I also tried explicity setting my roommate's IP address to 192.168.0.2
(rather than mess with dhcpd). I can't ping his windows computer from my
linux box, and I also cannot ping my linux box from his computer. I'm
guessing I'm missing some setup detail on my side. My interface eth1 is
the one connected to the switch, here's the ifconfig output on eth1:

...and the output of route:

jakarta.gw.uiuc * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 ppp0

default jakarta.gw.uiuc 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ppp0

If those outputs are of any help.

Both the same really - Although those from the Windoze world would
probably feel (initially) more at home with Star Office.

If you mean functions available: Have a look at the Feb 2000
Linux Journal for a break down

> 3) Most portable for files [ie to and from word, excel etc]

I would say Star Office is a little better on Word, Applixware
better with Excel, and Star Office is far more advanced in the
presentation stuff and even provides v.good import filters for

> 4) Least resources to run

Definietly Applixware - Hands down.

> 5) looks better

Thats a matter of taste - so thats up to you, but again most
people would select the StarOffice look & feel.

> 6) Better help/HOW-TO's

Applixware without a doubt. They have detailed online books and
better macro facilities (which is open source so you can develop
your own functions, features and end applications).

> 7) ...anything else you may wish to add...

Memory hog is StarOffice as it loads all at once. Applixware can be
loaded with 20+ languages (both spell checking and thrauses - see I
can't even spell it myself). You don't have to load all the office
functions with Applixware (just the Word stuff if you like) whereas
StarOffice has to come with everything.

I when from RedHat distributons to SuSE as they have both nicely
configured into KDE and its much more stable than the RH config
(probably becuase of Gnome issues).

I would strongly suggest you have a look at the LJ Feb 2000 issue
for all the other little matters.

the web (http://oss.sgi.com/www.linux.sgi.com/intel/visws/), and all
went well, until in the post-installation steps, where I should see the

provides a kernel patch customised for the 320/540, and has its own
XF86Config. Our Monitor is the 21'' SGI Monitor (GDM-5021PT).

Any help and suggestions welcome.

It's a darn fine program, but if you do lots of spreadsheet and
database-related work, it quickly becomes tiresome. Nothing - and I
mean _nothing_! - beats WP as a high-powered wordprocessor though. It
will perform 99.99% of the tasks you would do with a dedicated DTP

Never tried more recent formats than Word95 (I usually bully people
into sending me documents in the format I like). Both worked OK, but
StarOffice did a _long_ time over the conversion (time enough, not
only to drink, but to acually make a cup of coffee)

Applix.

Applix (but see question # 1)

Applix has a _book_!
I like books!

Applix doesn't take over my desktop.
I like StarOffice's drawing module more, but I never seem to be able
to collect enough memory to actually run it with more than glacial
speeds(I gave up at 96 MB).

Applixware

8) Import of MS Office files

StarOffice

Why don't you just try out both? You can download StarOffice for free at
www.sun.com and there's a beta out from Applix which you can get from
http://www.smartbeak.com/SmartBeak.ent?ENT_COMMAND=ENT_HTFILE&HTFILE=ax_milestone.hti

The new Applixware looks very nice, I think I'll get the final
product...

if your linux has partition magic, install it, or open it, and delete linux
partition. I used to do this two times, these first two, I install linux,
and cant run it, I was so [CENSOR] fustrated, and delete the [CENSOR] linux
partition (repeat one more time), and then someone tell me how to run it,
type "startx", I should have though of that in the first place, well...too
dumb to think of the "x"

yes, but these software are hard to find, or should I say "rare"
