I doubt that. What documents DID you read? There are... thousands
of pages of Linux info out there. I sincerely doubt you read them
all, so you're asking us to play psychic and guess exactly what you
don't understand.

It didn't use the IP address in my case, it used the hostid (sort of a
serial number installed by the mfr.

Yes, that's what it means, and yes, it's bad. In the case of Applix, I had
to install and configure the license manager (which is a pain), and if your
motherboard has to be replaced, or you just upgrade to a new machine (that's
what happened to me), your app stops working. And the vendor typically
won't fix it for you unless you pay. In the Applix case, they wanted about
25% of the purchase price to allow me to move the program to a different
machine.
I've sworn never to buy node-locked software again if there's any possible
way of avoiding it.

That can be done slightly easier by using single quote marks to
eliminate the need for double slashes. Here is my normal prompt,
which uses cyan for the prompt color:
PS1='\[\033[36m\]\h:\u \w >\[\033[m\]'

get this message:

This means that some or all hosts will be unreachable.
Perhaps there is a problem with your name server?

$SOCKS_NS environment variable to point at the appropiate name server. It
may (or may not)be necessary to set this variable, or the SOCKS host
preference, to the IP address of the host in question rather than its name.

Announcements of binutils releases appear periodically on the gcc
mailing list (e.g., http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2000-03/msg00856.html)
and the libc-hacker mailing list
(http://sourceware.cygnus.com/ml/libc-hacker/2000-03/msg00159.html).
The standard C libraries are packaged in glibc. You can follow its
development through the Cygnus GNU libc page:
http://sourceware.cygnus.com/glibc/.
The standard C++ libraries are integrated into GCC:

Yes, if you allow the installation to format the partitions you will
lose everything. An "update" without repartitioning would save your
current settings. What are you hoping to do by re-installing, or what
is the problem you're having?

Subject: cygwin questions
Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 04:10:20 GMT
(1) I'm trying to port a simple linux program to dos using cygwin. The=20
program includes the following lines (where fname is a character array=20
that holds the name of the file that should be produced by sox):
sprintf(soxCommand,"sox.exe -r 22050 -s -w -c2 foo.raw %s\n", fname);
system( soxCommand );
I can compile the program under DOS/Win95, and run it in a DOS window,=20
but the file that is produced has length of 0 bytes. But if I type the=20
sox command at the DOS command line, sox runs properly, producing the=20
correct *wav file. Under linux, calling sox via system() works fine.=20
(2) In order to run my program under DOS, I had to place a copy of=20
cygwin1.dll into a directory in my windows path. Is there a way to=20
build a complete stand-alone program, which would not require that=20
this dll be installed? I've tried compiling using the -static option,=20
but this didn't change anything.
Thanks,

Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 04:32:25 GMT
This is to let everyone know about a new virus out there that has
infected a massive number of systems. While no one knows the
exact number of problems this virus can cause, some believe the
number is 63,000 or more.
http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2436920,00.html
Some of the key problems with this virus are:
It will slow down your system's performance.
It eats up lots of your hard disk space.
It eats up your RAM memory.
Many of you Windows 95 / 98 programs may no longer function.
The is no fix or cure for this virus. Users are being warned
to watch out for it. If you see this virus, DO NOT load it
into your system!!!!
This virus goes by the name, Windows 2000. If your system has
been infected with the Windows 2000 virus, I strongly suggest
that you re-format you hard drive and load it with Linux.

I am running Redhat 6.0, and use gnome/enlightenment (the default) for
my window manager. I often have a problem after rebooting--it takes
a few minutes to log in, and when I look (using top, for instance) the
CPU
isn't doing much, so the waiting isn;t because things are still loading.
I think it has to do with the network or something.
Does gnome/enlightenment look at the network for some reason?
I also have a problem getting a new gnome-terminal when my network is
down. So it MUST be that gnome looks at the network for some reason.
I need to fix this problem not only because it is annoying, but because
I am
going to be taking my machine off the network soon, and I don't want to
wait
forever to do anything because the window manager is looking for the
network
and it isn't there.
Can someone help me with this?

It does not really make sense to totally share the root file system.
Each UNIX system needs a (relatively) unique root file system -- each
system really needs to be unique on a LAN, or else all hell breaks out.
There are some things you can do to make things work the way you want.
1) Use YP: make one (always UP!) machine the YP master and the other two
IP slaves. The YP master contains the real passwd file. Each slave
will have a small local password file for use when the machine is booted
outside of the YP network (typically for maintenance situations).
2) You can mount /usr and /home with NFS. *Never* mount / and /var with NFS.
It is possible to mount /var/spool/mail with NFS, but if you do, don't
run sendmail, pop, or imap on the machines NFS mounting /var/spool/mail
(sendmail should be 'queue only' and should pass locally delivered mail
to the machine where /var/spool/mail is a local file system). Note:
/var/log should not ever be shared -- this will make a mess of your
system log files. /var/run should not be shared -- this is where daemon
pid and lock files live. The links to the X11 server and the X11 config
live in /var and /etc. Unless all of the machines have *exactly* the
same video boards, same mice, and same monitors, the X11 config needs to
be unique on each machine.
It is possible to *temporarily* mount a master machine's root file
system as a NFS mount to make it easier to transfer *common* config
info.
Note: diskless workstations do mount the root file system with NFS, but
the file system is always only exported to a *specific* *single*
diskless workstation -- it is not unusual to have a server system with
multiple 'root' file systems, NFS exported to diskless workstations.
There are various hacks for doing this -- older DECStations used DEC's
MOP protocol and maybe tftp and old SUN WorkStations used tftp to get
the kernel and copies of the NFS client software loaded and running
*before* mounting any filesystems. I would guess one could have a truly
interesting RAMdisk setup for a Linux box to do the same thing (Linux
*does* provide for unmounting the root file system and re-mounting it
from a different /dev/??? -- most of the machine *I* use do this -- I
mostly use SCSI systems with the SCSI driver in a module in an initial
boot ramdisk -- in a sense, these are all (sort of) diskless
workstations in a certain sense.

I believe they only 'give away' the Personal editions. Sun also sells
*hardware* -- and *sells* the *server* edition for big bucks. SCO
probably sells the server edition of SCO as well.
I suspect that the version that is 'free' is a low end version and is
not a 'full' distribution. The C compiler is not a bundled part
of Solaris (SunOS comes with a K&R cc -- good enough to bootstrap gcc).

Any recommendations on an IRC server that runs on Linux? I'm running RH6.1
and would like to host chat, and I've been told that I should probably stick
with IRC because there are so many clients out there. I'd prefer one that
can be moderated and create logs of particular chats.
Also, are there Java IRC clients out there to ease use from web sites where
people don't want to download the IRC client executables (often for fear of
viruses or because they are not well versed in installed applications on
their computers)?
