I am running SUSE V6, it arrived last Tuesday!

I have previously attempted to install RH5.1 with limited success (X
problems with ATI Xpert@Work), but SUSE 6.0 installed at the 1st attempt...
and just to confirm it is 2.0.x Kernel

Hi all,

I have checked the sunsite and know I can download the HOWTO's there
individually, but I am interested in downloading all the HOWTO's and mini's
in HTML format in one big tar'red, gzipped file. Is there any site where I
can get such a file? Thanks.

Apache installs and runs out-of-the-box (RedHat 5.2). RedHat 5.2 also
includes Samba, which is a MS-Windows file server. With Samba installed
on the Linux box, you boss will be able to do a "Map Network Drive" off
the Linux box -- it will look just like a NT server box (except it won't
BSOD all the time). In fact, except for the lack of ASP nonsense, your
boss probably would be unable to tell the difference, except it will be
faster and more reliable. Also RedHat Linux includes something called
"MARS" which is a Novel Netware server package. You can even run both
Samba and MARS at the same time. And if there are any random Macs
about, you can get and install NetATalk for them. Cover all bases with
one box.

Apache supports virtual hosting. There is available an SSL version
(doesn't come with RedHat's official package), if you need E-Commerce
support.

I don't know about Exchange server.

I went to SuSE 6 from 5.3 but unfortunately had to get rid of 5.3 first.
I think that SuSE 6 is rather well done and in the manner of previous SuSE
packages contains all the software one would expect. Installation was
quite good. People on the suse mailing list have upgraded without major
issues I believe. You may want to sign on the list and get some opinions
there.

Dear Xav,

I am a new player of Linux. I believe that you are more experience than me
because I don't even know how to invoke the 'make' command.

I have downloaded some free software from the network that require me to
install it with the 'make command such as 'make' and 'make install' etc.
However, when I follow the readme to do so, it will come back with me the
error messages of missing 'cc' and 'gcc' etc.

I appreciate it if you could advise me how to resolve this problem. Is
there something missing in my Redhat 5.2 during installation.

Many thanks and regards,

Hi all

I have seen a fellow linux user bring up a image outside of X windows,
and would like to know how to go about doing this. Before you say it,
yes I did ask him how it was done, but he didn't offer any instructions,

( probably because I was pestering him on some other problem I was
having.). So I was wondering if any one else has achieved this and if
so how.

Just for the record he was running Redhat 4.2 at the time, and the image

came up at the login prompt, ( he wasn't using xdm ).

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

It does. That makes it possible for the same lilo loader to load from SCSI
disks using the bios code on the scsi adapter.

No, but you need to look for imap on the redhat CD. This might no be so
obvious, but ipop3 is part if the imap package.

The obvious guess is that something is wrong with your system and
Linux is busy spewing errors to /var/log/messages.

I have linux/Win98 both booted from LILO and don't see this problem. I
regularly access files on the Win98 partitions from Linux. No
conflicts/problems with Win98 Defrag.

Try the following...

1) Be sure you have a bootable Linux Floppy!
2) Let Win98 fix the problem.
3) Re-run scandisk to be sure the problem went away.
4) Boot to Linux (use floppy if Win98 has killed LILO)
5) Rerun LILO.
6) Boot to Win98 and see if the problem came back.

I had a similar problem once, I ran defrag in Windows and then lilo was
wiped out from the mbr so I had to reinstall it. I was nevereven asked
if I wanted to commit the changes...
I have also encountered similiar problems when I had to run a program
enabling a 6.4 HD to be read and used in FAT 16. The program had to be
loaded first of all in order to set up the partitions so it could fool
DOS into seeing the drive. Defrag however managed to break something so
the program remained, but it couldnt find any systemfiles on c: so I
had to sys the drive...
My conclusion is not to trust defrag or scandisc either and whenever I
run it I make sure to have updated startdiscs... just in case.

{AJ} Extracting of tar archives might be quite slow since tar has to look up
userid and groupids and doesn't cache negative results. If you have nis or
nisplus in your /etc/nsswitch.conf for the passwd and/or group database,
each file extractions needs a network connection. There are two possible
solutions:

- do you really need NIS/NIS+ (some Linux distributions add by default
nis/nisplus even if it's not needed)? If not, just remove the entries.

- if you need NIS/NIS+, use the Name Service Cache Daemon nscd that comes
  with glibc 2.1.

I'd say that 4 meg is a tad light to run WP6DOS in full graphics mode.
You'll likely see a lot of sllloowww screen rewrites. OTOH, I've run WP6DOS
on a 286/16 with 5 megs without getting completely insane, so there you
go...

It would run just dandy in text mode, though. And there's always print
preview.

Also don't forget that WP6's file conversions are a little bit dated by now
(which is of course no problemo if you're not interested in Offallice 9x's
format).

I'd think it would be sensible for government regulations to prohibit
