The problem is your computer doesn't know the IP address of pop.myisp.com.
You either need to have an address for that machine in the /etc/hosts file
or configure your machine to query a DNS server that knows the address.

Can you ping any machines out on the network?

I agree. And if it was built as part of X then, providing it was a
decent server, it would be pretty much standard within a shortish time.

There's a product out there called "flagship", which is supposed to
be compatible with dBase, Clipper, and FoxPro (to the extent that
they are compatible with each other. It showed up in a "google" search.

Since McAfee bought Cybec (VET) some time ago, I'm sure they must

The only real downside I see is upgrading the base [g]libc stuff.

Certainly, my little old PC does not have a nameserver. Of course I want my
machine to query a DNS server at my ISP. I do not know why it does not. I
COULD find the address for pop.myisp.com and put it in my hosts?? file, but I
don't want to get this error every time I need to resolve an address that I
don't have. I thought my machine was configured as only a cache DNS, but of
course there's something wrong somewhere...

You can login as root, and leave it there in case you need it. You can have a
man page on one screen, and type a command on another. Neat, eh? There's six

I think it's based on the fact that there are reports of outstanding
problems related to gcc 2.95.x, while none are currently known for
(say) egcs 1.1.2. So the latter is considered "safe".

Try giving group write permissions on this spool directory. I use mode 771
which is a little tighter than usual; either 771 or 775 should work.

Are you using binary mode?

If you are using a command-based ftp, just type 'binary' at the ftp> prompt.
If you are using a graphical ftp client, there should be a binary option
within it.

Hope this helps...
