[good advice better than I could give snipped]

pine is a good standard for an email and news client, but on the news side
it doesn't handle threads very well (or at all IME, tell me if you know
otherwise).
tin is more likely to be available on any machine you log into, does have
threads but is a bit basic compared to...
slrn, lovely, threads, colourful, quite easy to navigate and just does the
job.
Emacs, bizarely, I tend to use as a text editor (and only then when I can't
get hold of joe/pico or nedit) so I can't comment.
>krn, xrn, Netscape (X)
krn seemed nice, netscape I tend to use as a web browser. At the end of the
day it just seems to be much quicker and easier to use a CLI news reader (it
is all in text after all).
>Use "leafnode" with most of these to pull articles from an NNTP server and

Hmmm, depends (I think). Slrn only downloads the headers IIRC so it can be
much quicker if you only read one or two posts, but leafnode is handy to
download them all while you're doing something else and are going to read a
fair portion of them all. On a modem I'd use slrn straight, on a decent
connection I'd use leafnode (if I wasn't on the same LAN as my news server,
which I am).

I've had a couple of troubles with XFree86 4.
I'd reccomend staying clear of it unless you want to send in some bug
reports. 3D acceleration in multiple windows is cool, though. :)

That is DOS telling you it can't load the DOS shell command.com
I think. fips probably completed. Check with Windows to
see what size your Windows partition now is.

You go to the Control Panel and double click on System. Then
choose Performance. You can disable virtual memory there
(although it says it is not recommended). Then after you
have defragged and resized the partition you can change that.
(You can also get to it by right clicking on My Computer and
choosing Properties.)
I certainly would have done that first before running fips, but
it may be academic now if you've already run it. If everything
is still working, I suppose you shouldn't worry.

Did you make sure in this process that you had 10 or 20 MB
available above your Windows partition and below cylinder
1024? If not, you may have trouble booting Linux from
your hard disk.

Hi,
I have two machines setup (both linux), machine A is directly
connected
to the internet while machine B is in the private subnet using A as a
firewall.
I have also got ip masquerading going, everything is fine except I
can't send
mail from machine B to the internet.
I have put down A as a "Smart relay host" in B:/etc/sendmail.cf, but
still getting
error messages saying something like "Relaying denied" or "User
unknown" when
I try to send emails on B.
Could some kind souls out there please educate me how I am supposed
to set up
sendmail for A & B correctly in order to allow mail relaying ?

Doesn't dd ignore formatting questions? As I understand it, it copies the

I know this has been mentioned many many times but I will post it again.
It has gotten way out of control again and it needs to stop.
Do not post to all newsgroups to ask a question!!
It really slows things down since there are newsgroups for specific
topics you need to choose the one that best fits your problem and wait
for an answer. These are not chatrooms!! When you cross post, it is a
waste of bandwidth and server space as well as time for those who would
help but get tired of having to sort through all the cross posts to get
to others and just don't have the time or won't waste time to help. If
everyone would post to the newsgroup that best fits the problem the
people with knowledge of the type of problems you are having will be
more likely to help.
My 2 cents!

I have tried the commands both as user root and news with same result.

Yes. Pcmcia network adaptors are seen by Linux as regular regular
adaptors so it is technically possible. However, I can see two
potential problems:
1 - Laptops have a tendency to grow legs and run away. Not very helpful
if the owner leaves on a trip/weekend or the laptop gets stolen.
2 - On some laptops, the PCMCIA bus lacks the oomph! to handle the load,
especially if you use a fastethernet adaptor.
