That would probably have to be a function of whatever window
manager/desktop environment/file manager you happen to be using.

My dyslexic typing is showing again. Silicom is the card manufacturer.
If anyone has web address/phone numbers I'd appreciate them.

I have installed KRN 0.6.12 into KDE network 1.1.2
I am only using it under the 'user ' account. It is working well
except I am unable to 'SAVE'. It just makes an empty file in my home
directory.I discovered a way to save using ' FOREWARD' and then
'SEND LATER' and then extracting messages from the send later directory.
This works well.
Does anybody know why I cannot 'SAVE'
I really like KDE and KRN and also Kmail.
Please post a follow up.

Hello !

I've got the following problem:

I have an executable file (maple) in a directory which is totally
impossible to start ! All the accesses are ok (chmod +x ...).

When I do a "ls -l" everything seems to be ok , but when I want to
run it, impossible ! the bash says that there is no file or repertory
of this type.

What's the problem ?

Subject: X 4.1.0 + FVWM2 + Neomagic chipset unstable
Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 13:43:23 +0200

It has been a pretty stable system (on a thinkpad 600E laptop with
neomagic chipset), too stable to keep it - at least, I upgraded, given
latest slackware efforts (as beginning of june; latest stable situation
was end of may), to 4.1.0 of XFree plus fvwm2. It's much faster.

But it's not stable any more: Some programs under X tend to say good-bye
now by themselves (e.g. gnome-mahjongg, or netscape much more often than
elsewise). Maybe it has to do with mouse action. This is the second,
worse point: input devices will freeze the machine when switching from
text console to X (ALT-F7) _and_ the 'mouse' trackpoint has not been
perfectly left alone.

Tried it with 8 bpp and with 24 bpp. Normally, when changing to graphics
mode, it needs a second or so to stabilize (X draws most part before and
finishes drawing after that moment). When freezing, X finds a somehow
slightly disturbed picture (mostly this is 10 to 15 percent of the upper
part of the screen) and doesn't enter the second phase. Instead it sits
there and blocks access to the machine. Had a similar behaviour,
rarely, as well before version 4.0.3. With 4.0.3 this had disappeared
and it was _very_ stable. Now it is there again.

Has anyone switched to watching TV with an ATI 'All in Wonder' card,
using XFree 4.1.0 ? Gatos is working _very_ fine with XFree-3.3.6, so I
want to think about it twice before upgrading (and leave Gatos behind,
since support now is announced to be in the server). This is with
slackware (about June '00, with kernel 2.4.4 and fvwm2) with uptimes
(together with an always running DOS-application below dosemu 1.0.0)
steadily in the range of months.

it's because you are trying to install a 'src' rpm, not a binary.
either get a 'i386/ppc/alpha' binary or recompile the src rpm/
(for a src rpm build you will need to issue rpm --rebuild
horde-1.2.4-1rh7.src.rpm. this will then make you a binary for your
platform)...

Could someone tell me why if i enable my network card in my PC
the internet connection stops! I am using mandrake 7.2, one simple n/work
card, only 2 pcs on a basic tcp/ip network, no other servers at all.
If i disable the network then i can access web pages, ping web servers etc
If i set the network backup then i can not do any of the above!
Is this a simple problem? I have checked my /etc/resolv.conf file and
my DNS server for my ISP is in there. My /etc/hosts file contains my ip
address and thats it.

Cheers for your time.

Show us the output from:
'netstat -rn'

If your NIC is down and if it's up. Sounds like a routing problem.

Have a look at man hosts.deny some interesting stuff in there, it
seems that you can deny individual useres rather than a particular
IP Address if that's what you want.

Something like:

/usr/bin/telnet:90.0.0.2

But have a look at the man page.

What is happening is that the loader is trying to load the file,
notices that
some libraries are needed, but cannot find the libraries. To find out
what libraries
try 'ldd ./maple' in the directory containing the executable.

I have the Linux ABI patch with kernel 2.4.3 and it seems
to run my old AT&T SVR3.2 binary just fine, except for
one thing. All the while the SVR3 binary is running,
the hard drive is thrashing. Continues for a short while
even after I've exited the SVR3 program.

And idea what that's all about? How do I get it to stop?
Besides not running the binary. 8^)

TIA.

I tried a lot of things, but after chain of failures I
decided to do it another way. I have 3MB ext2 as root and
mount vfat to /usr. I symlink/loopback other dirs. I use
custom init. This is good enough. I tried it and it works.

You helped. Thank you.

I have to second this ICP vortex are great cards. His hardware is
definitely adequete, but what is he serving?

With only 2 18GB disks, I'd consider giving SCSI a miss all together, and
using fast IDE disks, very good experience using the fast IBM ones in web
servers.

For the money saved, you could buy 512MB RAM and something like a Promise
ATA-100 card with 2 extra disks.

RAID 10 gives better performance, than RAID 1, an advantage of software
RAID is it's easier to mix and match depending on what integrity
requirements you have.

The second thing is, Debian. It's a great distro, but if you're asking the
questions about the server, because you're new to Linux, you'ld be much
better off with SuSE 7.2, or RH 7.1. They're much easier to configure, and
you get (with SuSE) solid ReiserFS and LVM support. Debian potato is
rather dated now.

I'd guess that you have set your default route to your ethernet card.
This almost certainly isn't what you want. For 2 PCs you don't need a
default route for the LAN.

As Michael said, show us the output of netstat -rn.

Ensure that the machine can resolve itself. Usually this means putting
in an /etc/hosts entry for each of its interfaces.

The info pages give more practical information than the man pages which
are
more reference oriented. In addition, major utilities have manuals in
postscript
that are ready to print. For example, the GNU Awk manual is around 200
pages.

The current directory is not is the path that's searched for executables. Type:
echo $PATH
