What do you mean "it doesn't let you"? :-) Does it give you an error due to
an invalid password, or do just not see any characters when you try to type
the password? Well, if it's the first one: bad luck, you forgot the password :(
If it's the second one: this is normal. Just enter your password and hit
the "enter" key. In windoze there are those cute stars appearing when you type
your password. Linux just keeps a password field blank.

Really? I keep hearing this. I had win 98 on my machine for 18 months and
never had to reinstall it. I do admit the reboots were annoying though, in
98 and NT, and I am glad that Win2k has solved these problems.
But "all those reinstalls" - really? What could you of been doing wrong to
need to do that.

Upgrade, upgrade. gs 6 and 6.01 does embedded Type 1 fonts (with a single-byte
encoding vector) perfectly. It also makes a fair job of TrueType.

(raises eyebrow)
* Specifically Red Hat? And a given version? Offhand, I don't
know of any reasons why they'd patch the scheduling algorithm,
but then I'm not a kernel dev.
Red Hat stuff can, naturally, be found at Red Hat (www.redhat.org).
First check /usr/src/linux. On a box where the kernel sources have
been installed, normally /usr/src/linux is a symlink to something
like /usr/src/linux-2.2.14, with sources.
* If it's not there,
a) find a Red Hat mirror (http://www.redhat.com/mirrors.html)
say, ftp.cc.gatech.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/redhat
Pick the appropriate one:
redhat-6.2/SRPMS/SRPMS/kernel-2.2.14-5.0.src.rpm (6.2)
redhat-6.1/SRPMS/SRPMS/kernel-2.2.12-20.src.rpm
Use either rpm or rpm2cpio followed by cpio, or alien, or
whatever else you wish to install.
b) Or choose the canonical sources, perhaps from ftp.us.kernel.org.
e.g.
/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/linux-2.2.14.tar.gz
* Figure about 15MB of download, so if you're using a 56k or slower,
you might want to pop out for dinner. And walk the dog 'round
the block. Several times.
* Unpack wherever.
* In the Documentation dir, there's a bit about scheduling in smp.tex
if you care about SMP mode.
* Check kernel/sched.c; that might be the most interesting bit to you.
But as noted before, I'm not a kernel dev.

You need to:
1) Uncompress the files into a directory. Any directory.
2) Run the install script. I think it's called either Runme or install.wp
(the downloadable version uses one name and the retail version the
other, but I don't recall which is which offhand.) To do this, change
to the directory where the script exists and type ./Runme or
./install.wp, as appropriate.
3) Follow the on-screen prompts. When asked for a location, tell it to
install in /opt/wp8 or /usr/local/wp8. (Just about anywhere should
work, actually, but these are fairly conventional places for it.)
If you need more detailed instructions, try posting what's causing you
confusion, or check out a book on WP for Linux, like my own _Special
Edition Using Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux_ (see
http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/).

Hello!
I have tried: "make menuconfig", "make config" and "make xconfig" on 2
different Redhat 6.2 machines (the gnome workstation), but all I get is
an error message that it can't do make.
Does anyone have a clue why it doesn't recognize the make command?
I am in /usr/src/linux when I do the make.
TIA!

The piece that is really missing compared to windows is the
ability for an application to know internal details of
the selected printer (internal fonts, paper types and trays, etc.)
and thus have the ability to change these things within
a single document (like printing an envelope, the first page
on letterhead, the rest on plain, and collating these correctly
in the output tray). On the other hand, applications are
generally free to pipe through any preprocessing filter or
arbitrary program instead of sending directly to the printer
interface which is next to impossible under windows - I've
sometimes mapped a printer to a samba-served program on a Linux
box just to get this ability.

Perhaps because you haven't installed it?
Check. Man rpm as a first exercise! I would wager that you haven't

If you forgot the root password, then it is eaasily fixed.
If you have lile, type
linux 1
at the Lilo: prompt.
It will boot you in to aa single user session, without asking for a password. You
should get a
bash#
prompt. Type
passwd root
and enter a password.
Then either reboot (by typing "init 6" or "shutdown -r now") or go in to runlevel
5 (the GUI 'mode') by typing "init 5"

v4l-conf comes with xawtv - mine is in /usr/local/bin, I installed
xawtv from source. v4l-conf is used to set everything up (ie. overlay
and such-like).
I was confused as to why you didn't have fbtv either; now I think your
install of xawtv isn't complete. How did you install it and which
distribution do you have again?
I would recommend uninstalling your current version (if you're using
rpms or something) and installing from source at this point. Get it
from freshmeat.net and search for xawtv. It's not that difficult
really :-)
I get the feeling that this will solve all your problems, as this
explains why nothing else works.

Maybe xawtv should complain about this a bit more obviously!

It would help if you posted the exact error message. If the computer is
not finding make it may be because you do not have make in your path, or
it is not installed. I am NO expert in make but I think it gets
installed with the C or C++ compilers. I think RH uses gcc, try
searching to see if it's installed.

You may also try looking at the files /etc/hosts.allow and (if
