You guys might find this as amusing as I do:

I've spent a few hours dressing a GNU/Linux box running KDE up so that
it looks very much like a certain popular OS - Windows 2000 to be
precise. Having gotten most of the niggly little problems worked out (ok
the windows key mysteriously stopped working, but a few miscellaneous
bugs just make a better forgery - this is windows we're trying to
emulate remember!) I just went and set it up in our Windows NT 4.0 lab
amoungst the genuine M$ machines. Appart from the fact that it's about
twice as fast and responsive as the real windows machines (maybe I
should add a few background processes to waste some CPU cycles and tell
linux to ignore half the RAM.... and a proggie to make it throw a BSOD
and reboot every so often) it fits in rather well... now to see if any
of the lusers notice the difference :)

Something wants CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS set in your kernel .config. See
Documentation/Configure.help to see what that's about.

It appears that this /proc (pseudo)file is no longer in 2.3.99-*. You
may need to update something to be ready for 2.3.*.

I tried this, but instead of helping my computer it hurt it. I was getting
around 10 or 11 when I did hdparm but when I typed that line, and I did type it
correctly...it dropped to 1-2 when I looked at hdparm. So next solution?

I use HP660C and it was not auto-detected. So I use control panel and
configure the printer. I set local and add plus using the /dev/lp0 and lp1

There are three common methods:

(1) List the directory in /etc/ld.so.conf, then run /sbin/ldconfig.
(2) Put the directory in the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
(3) Compile the executable with the "-rpath" flag.

The make(1) program uses a file (usually called "Makefile" or "makefile")
to get its "rules" for making "targets" (usually files) from (other) files.

It's possible that there is no Makefile (or it exists but is broken), but
I'd guess that make(1) is trying to apply an "implicit rule"--for example,
"page/SUBSYS.o should be made from page/SUBSYS.c"--but is failing to find
an applicable one. (In other words, there is no source-code file
corresponding to the needed object file.)

Hi,
I have encounter this problem with RedHat Linux 6.2. I recompiled the
kernel to give support to dual-processor. I'm not sure if this is the right
thing to do.

Anyway, I compiled to kernel, modify lilo, rebooted the machine.
Everything went fine, until a boot message appears saying Kernel Panic,
can't mount root (or something like that).

I can't get linuxconf to set /dev/sda1 (which is root disk for existing
kernel) as root disk for the new kernel. I ignored this, modified lilo.conf
manually (used vi) did lilo -C (I'm not too sure if this the right command
option, but I checked the manual page before doing that) for lilo to take
effect.

The kernel is the one that comes with the box (2.2.14-5.0).

Hello;

I have read that dump is dependent the file system so that a unique
version of dump must be written for each file system. The version of
dump that came with my distribution will only support the Linux native
ext2 file system. I guess if your system has multiple file systems
you could use dump for the Linux native partition and then use something
else for the other file systems.

I have not heard any comments regarding 'pax' and would like to
know more about that package. I have also heard that GNU cpio supports
tar, cpio, and remote devices. has anyone tried this?

you could,
a. clone the crucial partitions,
b. upgrade the cloned system,
c. correct misbehaved files from the original
d. get rid of the original after all tests clear

or some other strategy along this lines.

For the bare minimum I would keep a backup copy of /etc. But then, it's
better to have a backup routine anyway.

first thing first.

What if as a root you type:
echo "Hello World" > /dev/lp0

do you get any result?

if not, you have to play around with kernel modules for the parallel
port. if it's ok, then use the printtol (or whatever) from control

Hello:Ok when you see two drives in windows its because you took your 20gb
hard drive and split it into two dos partitions so windows is seeing them
as two drives..Thats not what you want to do.What you do want to do is
make one dos partition for windows and then make another partition thats
for linux the ext2fs.The partition thats made for linux will not be seen
as a second drive as long as you dont format it for dos.If you format both
partitions with dos fdisk they will be seen as two drives in windows.Since
you have messed up your partition anyway heres what I would.First backup
all the windows data you want to save (hopefully you have a way to do this
such as a rewriter etc)Then make up your first partitions as your linux
partitions but dont format them. Then make your windows partition and
format it for dos.Install windows. Then go to linux and format its
partitions in linux.Install linux and you should be ok. For howto's and
links try my site http://www.geocities.com/wrattz/linux1.html

Is the screen squeezed (you see everything on it, but with a funny
horizontal/vertical ratio) or is 1/4 of the screen image hidden?

In the first case you should play around with the adjustment buttons you
can find on your monitor

My question to the Linux users that gave all their answers, Why do you
have to be so rude when a guy asked for help? Attitude like that will not
help Linux. We all know Linux is better but answering with a "I know

Linux is better so lets act in a more professional manner. This is not the

When you installed Linux on "drive d" it wrote lilo (linux loader) into the mbr
(master boot record) This was to enable you to boot into either partition at
boot.
You should have gotten a "lilo" prompt, at which time if you hit <tab> you can
then type your selection (usually dos or linux - or hit enter for default -
again, usually linux)
When you re-install Windows98 it is going to overwrite the mbr again and only
boot into Windows ignoring the Linux install.
You can use your boot disk to boot into linux and run lilo from the command
prompt to get the boot loader (lilo) working again.

good luck

sorry, but you don't have to re-install just because you re-created the

Thanks Jim nice overview. One question I have is can you under Linux
redirect ports (ie: printing) as I wish to use Win4Lin to reverse
engineer some small apps and port to linux ?

(Reverse Engineering is legal in Australia).

Grahame.

Am I supposed to see the entry appear at the LILO prompt? I really don't
see any 'append' taking place, and the dmesg seems to confirm that my
parms were ignored:
    append =  "sbpcd=0x230,1"
(this was the result of a modprobe, fyi)
I even ran LILO after I made the entry.
This is on Mandrake 6.1
