Or:

You may be encountering permission problems at the directory level.
Drag-and-drop still has to follow the rules of Unix file access
permissions. You have to have "write" permission on the directory
to create a file in that directory. And to "move" a file to
another directory, you must have write permission on both the "from"
and the "to" directories; the permissions on the file itself are "n/a".

I have a manual for Apple A/UX lying around.

And I don't even own a Mac (never have). How weird is _that_, huh?

Not all Z series are alike, as those looking for Win2000 drivers will
find out. The 5700 and Z51 have OS/2 drivers available.

The Lexmark Optra Color printers have excellent and enthusiastic support
for and from Linux. Not surprising since they include Postscript
emulation. Go to deja.com and search to find that out.

1st Q:
Umm, you're right. Vfat isn't the right type....

2nd Q:
Root can see and copy the contents no problem. The part that still puzzles
me is that the users can't change to the directory or do an ls from it, while
root can.

Hi Charles. To ease the culture shock coming from Windows you might
try xcoral. It's free and comes on some of the distributions(but if
you don't have it a web search will find it.) The idea is to be as
close to using a Windows editor as XWindows will allow and it has some
nice features. Although, I found that if I keep an emergency list of
common commands for emacs handy, esp. in X, it's not that hairy to
use after a while. Plus you can do so many things out of it, compile
(and there are startup macros that let you double-click the error msg
to go to the source line like Win compiler environments,) compose
and send email, etc.. It's really so integrated into unix type systems
that if you're going to use Linux that you might as well check it out.
Esp. running in X you can use the mouse and menus until you get used to
some of the key combinations. Anyway xcoral lets you have multiple windows
and I think you can have multiple views of the same file and I believe it
does line numbering as well as column cut & paste(which emacs does also.)
The xcoral key combinations are closer to what you'd expect from Windows,
so it's easier to get started.

Enjoy. :)

Does anyone know anywhere that there may be a web site that describes a

There must be somewhere you can go through a step by step process to
check out every possible configuration to make sure you have all the

Can someone also tell me where I would find the log file of errors that

You don't have to burn a CD if you don't want to. If you have a
partition that is not otherwise part of the system tree, such as a /home
partition, you can download the distribution there and upgrade from
'locally mounted filesystem'. You need to create a proper boot floppy.

You will go through a boot / install much like when you installed RH
6.0, but when it asked, select 'Upgrade'. It won't need to ask you much
of anything else. All of your configuration will be retained.

There is a 'group of RPMs' you can download -- this is 90% of what is on
the CD! You could upgrade most of it using rpm on the runing
system, but a few of the upgrades are kind of strange to do on a running
system -- it is best if these things are done from an install boot --
this way you won't be messing up the live system while it is running
It is really bad news if you remove an older shared library, before you
remove the utilities which use it and then need to use the utilities.
Really really bad if the utility in question is rpm or something rpm
uses. The boot / install system is 'self contained' on a RAMDISK loaded
from the boot/install floppy. This is a 'clean' system which the
installer does not mess with.

Hey all,
I was just about to send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but
figureded that before I bother him with this question, maybe someone
out there has the same situation.

I want to setup an ipchains based firewall but give a specific
group of IP addresses access to the server that the firewall is on.
IE: I want to deny all except xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx is the
ipaddress I want to give rights to). Furthermore, I want to only
allow that group of IP addresses telnet and ftp service only.

I have been looking and playing with ipchains for a solution
to this problem but cannot find an answer. Anyone out there have any
suggestions?

My configuration is:
Epox EP-7KXA with a 700 MHz Athlon
Using the built-in sound (VIA VT82C686A) rather than a sound card. Rod
Smith's suggestion to use the ALSA sound drivers worked great.
Matrox G400
Actiontec PCI56012-01CW PCI modem
Linksys LNE100TX ethernet
Parallel port printer

As long as your video and audio are both on the PCI bus, that should not
be a problem. PCI devices can share interrupts. My video and modem share
IRQ 10, and my ethernet shares IRQ 11 with all the devices on the VIA
VT82C686A (there is more than just audio). On the other hand, if you are
trying to use an ISA sound card, perhaps take it out for now and see if
that is the problem.

Dia is a program designed to be much like the Windows
program 'Visio'. It can be used to draw different kinds of diagrams. In
this first version there is support for UML static structure diagrams
(class diagrams) and Network diagrams. It can currently load and save
diagrams to a custom fileformat and export to postscript.

QCad is a professional CAD System. With QCad you can easily
construct and change drawings with ISO-texts and many other
features and save them as DXF-files. These DXF-files are the
interface to many CAD-systems such as AutoCAD(C) and many others.

Xcircuit is a general-purpose drawing program and also a specific-purpose
CAD program for circuit schematic drawing and schematic capture. Output
is PostScript.

Cycas is a complete 2D+3D CAD package for X11.
Some of its features: Easy to use GTK+ Interface, WYSIWYG display,
printing, plotting, import/export filters, photorealistic rendering,
special methods for architectural design, full HTML documentation,
tutorials, example drawings, fonts and symbols.

Sketch is an interactive X11 drawing program (similar to XFig or tgif).
It is written almost completely in Python, an object oriented
interpreted programming language.

Xfig is an X Window System tool for creating basic vector graphics,
including bezier curves, lines, rulers and more. The resulting
graphics can be saved, printed on PostScript printers or converted to
a variety of other formats (e.g., X11 bitmaps, Encapsulated
PostScript, LaTeX).

Rather then using ipchains, you could use the the tcp/ip wrappers.
Has the same result, but is easier to use for applications which are
compiled to take use of wrappers. It works by editing the
/etc/hosts.allow and hosts.deny files.
