I tried to remove /etc/issue.net or put empty words in it so that
nothing to be displayed while login, especially the information of
operating system and version number. But every time after I reboot the
machine, the original issue.net overlapped again. How can I keep my own

Subject: xmms freezes randomly. Why?
Date: 18 Apr 2000 07:11:49 GMT

 Hi,
The subject just about says it all. I have recently discovered the
magic of mp3's. I play them with xmms on a celeron 366 system with
128 Meg RAM and a Seagate ultra narrow HD. The version of xmms I'm
ruuning is the one that came with mandrake 7 (xmms-0.95.1). The
linux installation is more or less mandrake 7.0 with all the
original gtk etc lib versions. My sound chip is built on to the
   motherboard. It's a C-media 8338. I'm using the latest cmpci.o
driver from c-media's website. There are two main problems I'm facing:

      1) Running mp3 files directly from netscape is erratic. I'm not
trying to stream them or anything. All I want is the mp3 file
to be downloaded to /tmp and then played by xmms. I've
directed netscape to run the command "xmms %s" just like for
any other helper application. This seems to work some of the
time and not for other times (about 60/40 success/fail ratio)
The downloading is not the problem. The files download
correctly each and every time. ( same thing happens even
if the link is to a local file).

      2) This is more serious: Running a lengthy playlist, xmms
randomly freezes in the middle of a song. The song stops
but The scrolling song info keeps running. Now if I
click one of the xmms windows, everything
freezes... including the scrolling. The only resort at this
point is to kill the parent xmms process ( which at least
cleans up all the other xmms processes nicely). There are no
messages in any file under /var/log when the freeze
happens. I can't even begin to diagnose the problem.

Any hints tips clues etc will be appreciated.

I did find that patent, but if you understand what it's saying, it's
describing the optical mouse pad of the more typical form of optical mouse.
Note that it requires seperate light and dark paterns seperated by edges.
In other words, a cross hatch pattern of light and dark. That's exactly the
design of the normal optical mouse pad.

This has nothing to do with the Microsoft intellieye mouse which works on
virtually any surface (including mirrors).

While having difficulty manually partitioning a 2.5GB of my IBM Thinkpad, I
tried Red Hat 6.1's autopartitioning. It worked but for some reason I couldn't
make to lilo to boot Windows 98 as default. There's also 'kudzu' that might be
autoprobing both the Winmodem and a PCMCIA Megahertz XJ-CC-4288 modem that
neither one I could use to dial out.

Hi there.

My setup :
386 running Caldera OpenLinux 1.3 (Kernel 2.0.35). (name=support)
/etc/exports entry : "/data haven(rw)"
running rpc.nfsd, rpc.mountd (is both necessary?)

Pentium, running Mandrake 7.0 (Kernel 2.2.14) (name=haven)
"mount support:/data /mnt/data" - Mounts the drive.

But, when I issue the command "cp /root/CHANGES /mnt/data/CHANGES" I get the
response:
"cp: cannot create regular file `./CHANGES' : Permission denied.

Why is this? Note : Doing all this as root. Still doesn't work. Though, If,
on the 386 I copy a file to /data, I can read it from the Pentium(haven).
Why is this? The (rw) tells nfs to share it read-write, isn't it?

Please help!!

netkit-tftp-x.x-x.i386.rpm

I also had the same problem, I was using the Rage Fury 32MB w/ tv-out
(however I never use TV-out on this card, and was definately not using
it at the time of install).

I also could not figure it out. My immediate solve was this: Since I
knew it was late in the install procedure, I just clicked where the
"next" button would be. I knew the only thing after this step was the
floppy boot disk creation and restarting the computer.

My problem occurred at the Xconfigurator step - after clicking on test
this configuration. I guess next time I don't have to do this, since it
has my monitor (ViewSonic a75s) parameters defined in the setup program
and know the specifications of the video card.

Xconfigurator running after this install had no problems, and X/Gnome
works fine. I have never seen the distortion again.

The act of "relaying" is when the server sends mail on behalf of a
client. For example, you appear to be using Microsoft Outlook to post
to the newsgroups, so I will assume that it is also your default mail
program. Outlook express is incapable of sending mail itself, so it
looks upon a server to relay it. It connects to a smtp- port 25 (not
pop3- port 110) server, and requests it to relay the email. I recognize
sendmail (the RH6.2 Default) and qpopper as accredited smtp servers.

You would quickly recognize that it is a bad idea to enable relaying by
default, as any spammer could connect to your server and send all the
mail he/she wishes. When spammed users come screaming to someone, it
will be your door they come knocking on.

Now that you know what you are looking to do, you should be able to
configure it in the sendmail.conf file. I would give you more
information, but I use postfix myself, so I am unable to reach the man
pages (man sendmail.conf).

Hope this helps-

Ahhh! My apologies, qpopper is a port 110 service, but I hope the
information on relaying is helpful.

But remember, conv=swab works only to change endianness of files made
wholly
of *16-bit* integers. If there are bytes, or longs, or floats, there are
no
other ways than (1) writing a conversion program that *knows* the
structure of the
files; or (2) modifying the app that reads the files so that it *always*
assumes
big-endian when reading the files, even when the platform is
little-endian.
Option (2) is my favorite.

Greetings.

Hi,
We have about 5 linux server to store user's mail,
and the usernames is uniq.
Can I use [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
and let user on any server can get their
mail correctly?
I know I can use MX to transfer mail send to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to
[EMAIL PROTECTED],
but I don't know if many hosts exist.
Please tell me how to do.
Thanks.

You were probably thinking of Olaf Kirch's unfsd, which is a NFS server, not
a client (as you want). I'm pretty sure I've never seen a userspace NFS
client - although I suppose such a thing would be possible. Can you run a
Samba server on your NFS server and access it with smbclient from your
super-mission-critical box?

Rich.
