Hi,
I am succesfully running samba (2.0.3) on a linux machine, serving
a few Windows NT machines and a few linux machines (smbmount from
samba 2.0.5a) too.
Some filenames contain the Swedish letters , , (adieresis,
odieresis, aring). I can't get these to display correctly on *both*
the unix and the windows clients.

If I use "client code page" and "character set" in smb.conf the
letters display fine on the windows clients, but show up as ? in
linux. If I do not use the two parameters above, it works on linux but
not on linux...

With "in linux" I mean that I checked ls under bash and dired in
emacs. The bash setting is:

export LC_ALL=sv_SE
set meta-flag on
set input-meta on
set convert-meta off
set output-meta on

but unsetting all these things does not help...

I would like to know if these problems can be solved in samba 2.0.3 or
in any other version.

thanks a lot,
Stefano

Hi...

I am trying to setup Quake 3 to work with my Redhat 6.2 installation.
No luck whatsoever... I downloaded the drivers from NVidia for the
card, but they have a dependency requirement of XFree 4.0. As you
probably know, Redhat doesn't install with XFree 4.0, and I am not sure
I want to try to install and compile it myself at this point...

Has anybody at all out there been able to get Quake 3 (or Unreal
Tournament) to work with Redhat 6.1 or 6.2, and has a TNT2 card?

Please let me know what steps you took. Thanks. I would like to do away
with my worthless install of Winblows as soon as possible, but right
now, it is the only way I have to play Quake.

I had that problem, when Windows decided to over-run its partition. A
run of Disk Doctor (unfortunately, too late) told me that hda1 & hda2
were overlapping. Unfortunately, Linux was already gone by then :(

Check out man fdisk and look for the MSDOS 6.x stuff. Maybe that
helps a bit.

Subject: NFS Server Recommedation
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 00:08:26 -0700

Greetings:

I am seeking information about the following:

a. Recommendations for linux hardware (assembled or configuration) to
perform reliable, scalable network server that can serve up to 50
windows/nt clients and 50 UNIX clients.

b. The storage capacity of the network server can be anywhere from 500
GB to 1 TB.

c. The connectivity to the switch should be via gigabit link. Any
recommendation about the NICs for gigabit?

d. Filesystem configuration or recommendations. What happens if the
machine goes down? Will the system perform a 'fsck' check on the 500 GB
filesystem? That might take substantial time and delay the functionality

of the server. How is this problem solved by folks who actually
implement a linux based NFS server?

e. Also, how will the above scale (performance & reliability) to much
expensive models like Sun Enterprise 3500 or the NetAppliance 700
series?

f. Any RAID recommedations?

g. Any backup software recommendations?

Any information on the above is appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,

Bobby Sardana.

SO what's your point moron? You don't offer a solution, just philosophical
whimsy.

WHen I dual booted Linux (virus ware) onto NT4, I used an excellent TP
utility called "Boot magic" that came with "Partition Magic". It took care
of the details, and I was able to dual boot.

This whole thread underscores how software is dependent on hardware (and
vice versa). The big lie that Linux is "platform independent" is just that.
Try running Linux on a Mac as easily as on Unix hardware. Linux is made for
Unix machines (mainframes), or, rather, it was ported to a PC with a
mainframe in mind (not an ideal solution).

Just my two cents.

Stick with Win2k on a genuine Intel processor if you really want to rock.

How can you copy stuff from one folder to another without changing the
timestamp?
I need this for two reasons:
1) I want to backup and restore directories by hand ( specifically I
want to copy over the some directories by hand, reinstall linux from
scratch, then recopy those files, some of which are scm files so
timestamp is important ).
2) I want to compile a large library on one computer ( which has a
large hd), then copy stuff over to other computers which don't have
as much storage ( after i remove intermediate files and unneeded files
). Part of this involves not mucking up the timestamp.
