Ok, I found this at
"http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO/troubleshooting.html"

<-->
If init starts, but you get a message like: Id xxx respawning too
fast: disabled for 5 minutes

it is coming from init, usually indicating that getty or login is dying as
soon as it starts up. Check the getty and login executables and the
libraries they depend upon. Make sure the invocations in /etc/inittab are
correct. If you get strange messages from getty, it may mean the calling
form in /etc/inittab is wrong.
<-->

But what can I do if I won't get a login? At this position the tty's are not
up, yet.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

The /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit file is what actually tells the system to load
the modules about line 252

        if [ -x /sbin/depmod -a -n "$USEMODULES" ]; then

and then a couple of lines starting about line 264

        if [ -L /lib/modules/default ]; then
INITLOG_ARGS= action "Finding module dependencies" depmod -a
default
       else
INITLOG_ARGS= action "Finding module dependencies" depmod -a

Oh yeah, and you will want to unmount the drive when you want to remove the
disk, or put another one in

to unmount the drive., do :

umount /floppy

make sure that you are not in that Dir, or you'll get a " device Busy "
error message.

As others have pointed out, distribution selection is a very personal
decision, and what's "best" for one person may not be "best" for
another. There's therefore no way to honestly say "get distribution A"
in response to your query. I have, however, put up my own thoughts
about various distributions on my web page:

http://www.rodsbooks.com/distribs/

This may or may not contain whatever information you need to make the
proper choice, but with any luck it'll be useful to you.

I'm trying to build linux from scratch following the linuxdoc guide

while running 'make' to compile glibc-2.1.95 /w linuxthreads:

You need to setup a printer under Linux that uses
smbprint as a filter. Read the documentation at
www.samba.org or the online documentation that now
comes with Samba.

I just read an article "Linux soars, Red Hat merely flies"
in the Pittsburgh,Pa USA edition of "Computer User, Nov 2000".
They indicated that since '98 RH has grown 69% while
SuSE and Caldera have grown 175%. They also said that
TurboLinux has grown a whopping 450% !!!! Thus knocking
RH's market share to only 48%.

Anyone have experiances with TurboLinux? What do they have
to offer that the other flavors of Linux do not have? Why
such a tremendious growth? $80US seems to be a bit much.
I know that we have a "beta" server loaned to our company
that was pre-installed with TurboLinux. Are large companies
going Turbo instead of RH/SuSE, etc.?

Comments??

As an alternative, you can ask your system administrator to change your
entry in the password file (that's where your default shell name is
stored).

There is also the "chsh" command which will ask for your own password
and will allow you to set a new shell for your own account.

Subject: incorrect UDMA timing
Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 15:46:05 GMT

I am using kernel 2.2.16-3 (RH6.2)
with ide.2.2.16.all.20000825.patch.
Also, I'm using a Promise Ultra 100 controller.
Two IBM HD's are connected to the Ultra 100 (on
different ide ports). The drive on hde is an ATA-66
and the drive on hdg is an ATA-100. Both have correct
80 pin cables.
At boot, the Promise Ultra 100 bios configures the
drives correctly, i.e. channel 0 master (hde) into UDMA 4
and channel 1 master (hdg) into UDMA 5.
However, at linux boot, the ATA-66 drive comes up as
UDMA(33) whereas the ATA-100 drive comes up correctly as
UDMA(100). The hdparm -v command confirms these settings,
however, /proc/ide/pdc202xx shows both drives in UDMA4 (which
I don't believe, hdparm -t /dev/hde gives me same as I used
to get with my old PIIX4 UMDA 33 controller).
Any suggestions? I've attached boot messages etc below.

Definitely so. I have a box which connects to a known NTP server and
gets time served to my entire home network. This is definitely the way
to go. There are time clients on windows also that you can use. My
linux boxes all run ntpdate which points at the server which runs ntp. I
then wrote a simple little crontab which polls the server for time
changes every so often. This removed changing time for me completely.
My laptop is different since it goes to work, on the road, etc. For this
one, I set the bios clock to GMT and then set the system for the local
timezone I was in. There is a time howto which explains this pretty well
out there. Also if you do a "man hwclock" you can get an idea about what
goes on with bios and the time your Linux box tracks. I don't use the
"date" command whatsoever to set time.
