Which is right? (It looks like your message was posted at 16:58 ...).
Has your system been (re)booted since the DST changeover? Is your TZ

Yes, *regions* separated by edges. The quote mentioned surfaces "having
a random surface pattern relatively light and dark areas separated by
edges". If you view a pitted surface, and increase the contrast of the
image to the point that it becomes black and white, you'll get, say, a
white plain with lots of little black crescents where the pits are. That
black/white boundary is an edge.

It is a moot point though, because as other posters have already pointed
out, the patent text says virtually any surface should work, but
*especially* those as described above; I'd say that means the concept is
based on general edge detection and such surfaces are just easier to
process. I'd probably put money on the MS mouse using the same
technique, although I'd be delighted to hear that they have a new and
original technique.

I had similar problems and discovered that freezing is caused by esd
(Enlightenment Sound Daemon). Turning it off (or killing it) solves the problem.
In recent versions of XMMS you have very good esd plugin and it seems that
works very well with esd.

Tell us what mount command you are using, or the pertinent

You wouldn't perhaps be trying the mount the FAT32 filesystem
as type fat32 or FAT32 would you? The correct type is vfat.

Check out WINE (which is a play on words meaning Wine Is Not an Emulator). It
is still deep in developement but will reportedly run ALOT of Windows programs
on Linux. Let me know if you're successful! You might also be interested in

When rebooting my linux box, using the 2.3.99-pre3 kernel, my machine tends
to have a difficult time unmounting all the partitions, usually getting stuck
on /usr, but sometimes /var and /home. I think I've traced this problem to
something in the shm code, since, when I recompiled a kernel which didn't
support shm, everything worked fine. Of course, I would like to have shm
working if possible. Any ideas?

Neither is flying at MACH 5. But does that mean you would have zero respect
for an airplane that carried commercial passengers at that speed to anywhere
in the world for just $300 per trip?

There are very few new ideas. I've seen conveyor belts use a light sensor to
detect that the belt is moving. Same method as used by the mouse. But a
dramatically different scale. As other posters have done, bringing something
like this to the masses at a cheap price is a respectable feat.

It never ceases to amaze me that folks that are working on cloning a 20 year
old operating system are widely regarded as geniuses by their supporters
while Microsoft is regarded by the same crowd as not having an original
thought. It's especially ironic when you see Win2K kick the crap out of
every other OS ever made.

Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 03:56:43 GMT

I've spent a good chunk of the afternoon trying to configure a "ssh"
connection to my ISP account (for purposes of maintaining a CVS tree).
Everything is working properly... as long as I am willing to live with
the drawback of having to enter my password after EVERY cvs command I
send from a client machine through ssh.

I've been trying to setup public and private keys on the ISP and
client machines so that authentication can be handled automatically,
but have run into a strange quirk with that. I've created the keys
properly on the ISP machine in the ".ssh" directory, copied
the "identity" private key to the proper location on my client machine,
and try establishing a test ssh connection with the "-v" option to see
verbose output... and the error being reported is:

Remote: RSA authentication refused for sperkins: bad ownership or modes
for '/home/sperkins/.ssh/authorized_keys'.

The permissions for the "authorized_keys" file referred to on the
ISP machine are 664... I've tried other pemission settings, but have
had no luck. Has anyone else ever seen this issue with "ssh", or have
any idea as to what I may be doing wrong?

A thought....
GZip has a variety of compression levels.
Does it help if you use the "gzip -0" option (ie no compression,
basically it puts a header and footer and calculates cheksums but does
no actual compression - much faster). A different compression level
would increase the data size but would save a _lot_ of CPU time.

The default with Gzip isusually maximum compression, even turning it
down a couple of steps would save heaps of CPU time without much impact
on the output size.

Good luck.

It's not that they are cloning a 20 year old operating system, it's that
they are
making it so it DOESN'T CRASH!

I haven't played with Win2K yet, though. My previous experience with MS
operating

Still, Microsoft doesn't do everything wrong, as some would have us believe.
I just get

I did think of that, but I think I can rule that one out.
Formatting the partition under linux and Partition Magic found no disk
errors.
Copying the kernal image from the floppy to a different filename in
/boot directory, persumably to a different disk location, and having LILO
boot from that didn't help.
Erassing the disk and building a new ex2fs partition 5 Meg higher the the
previous attempt didn't help either.

Any other ideas???

Partition Magic is a partition management tool, not a multi boot loader. To
dual boot, you COULD use System Commander, but Win2K will dual boot just
fine as it is. Check out...
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html (It says NT, but
Win2K worked the same way for me.)

Subject: Can't login after crash, removed passwd 4 root same result
Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 05:02:01 GMT

Hello to Gurus or want to be Gurus,

I tried to download a years worth of mail and I somehow ended up
crashing my mandrake 7 linux system. When I rebooted and tried to login
I couldn't. I got my X window (kde) login prompt but it refused to let
me in as root or any other user. I alt-ctrl-F4 to a virtual consol and
got the same result.
I logged in as single user linux (init=/bin/sh at lilo promptp) and
remounted my root partition as read/write. I fsck my disk and I edited
my /etc/passwd file so that there was no password for root. Same result
after trying to login.
My next step is to do something to the /etc/shadow or the
/mnt/etc/shadow but I don't know what to do to it. Appended are
entries from my /var/log/messages. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Regards,

Tim L

Subject: auto logout in ssh

Hello.

How can I turn off or change the time of auto-logout in ssh1 and ssh2?
It seems to auto logout after 30 minutes of no activity.
