You've already figured it out. Got a copy of Lippman, or any
other C++ textbook? The examples in, say, Lippman, do the exact

Try the command depmod -a

Hello,
Does anyone have any idea how to get the sound working
for the VIA82C686A chipset.
I have the new ASUS K7V motherboard and have been trying to get the
sound working, and frankly have tried all I know...
My BIOS is all enables re sound (I have onboard sound AC97).
My kernel is 2.2.14 and it is compiled with sound, VIA and OSS
support set to yes by menu config.
Has anyone else been successful in getting the sound device
working on a k7v motherboard???
Thanks,

(Yes, I know that turning this on is a bad idea, but I need to do it

You can cd /path/to/package/

I've installed the ICQ module, and it seems to be working fine, but my ICQ
won't go online. If I take a look at my firewall logs, I can see the UDP
packet being sent, but nothing comes back! Here's a snippet of my log:
Apr 23 17:05:24 marvin kernel: ip_masq_icq: LOGIN
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:13417<-60211/3429, protocol v5
Apr 23 17:05:24 marvin kernel: Packet log: output ACCEPT eth1 PROTO=17

(#84)
I have full logging on (input AND output) so I would see any incoming
packet.
I'm running ICQ on a Windows98 box within my private LAN. From the logs, you
can see the internal IP for this box (10.1.1.20). I'm wondering if the ICQ
server is trying to reply to this IP.
Anyone had a similar problem?
Thanks,
js.

Get the ALSA sound driver at http://www.alsa-project.org
It works great on my system; not a Asus motherboard, but it does

I'd suggest booting up with a rescue diskette and looking at the partition
tables of each drive with fdisk. I've not been impressed with cfdisk.
(In fact, I'm not even sure I like the latest version of fdisk... you
now have to type a device name on the command line--it no longer defaults
to anything.) If you had the original partitioning of the disks, you
could probably rewrite those same parameters using fdisk and find that
the data is still there. (I usually make a copy of "fdisk -l" output
just in case.)

Drop down to runlevel 3 if you are in 5 by typing:
init 3
as root. I'm not asking you to go down to 1 as I no longer trust your
system to do it right :-)
Then shutdown all daemons:
for i in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S*; do $i stop; done
Now try unmounting all filesystems:
umount -a
and remount root read-only:
mount -n -o remount,ro /
What are the errors (and can you list /proc/mounts at this point)?
Check the integrity of umount by typing:
rpm -V mount
if OK, then this should give nothing. Otherwise, show us the output.
Bring the system back up by typing:
mount -n -o remount,rw /
mount -a
for i in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S*; do $i start;done
(and if required)
init 5

Subject: Installing Linux over Win98
Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 22:30:20 GMT
I was looking into setting up my win98 machine as a linux/win98 dual-
boot, when I discovered several linux distributions that can share a
partition with windows (DragonLinux, PHATLinux, ArmedLinux). This seems
like an easier solution than creating a separate Linux partition. But I
couldn't find much info about these distributions. Does anyone have any
experience with them? How do they stack up to each other and the more
common distributions?
BTW I have experience with setting up/maintaining a Linux system,
although I have used RedHat a fair amount, mostly for programming in my
CS classes.

It isn't clear whether he wants separate instances of the same
database running on different platforms or one copy accessable
from all platforms at once. If the latter, moving to an
sql backend with ODBC or JDBC interfaces from the MAC and windows
programs would be best. I doubt if file locking would work
well enough to trust in a cross-platform setup. There are
some perl DBF tools on CPAN if you do stay with DBF files.

So ... I said let's get true type fonts working! I have redhat 6.0 so
xfs is supposed to support it! And I have it working .... But not with
xfs the way it starts on boot. If I do a ps -ax |grep xfs, it is there
alright but there is no info about a port number. I have the line:
FontPath "unix/:-1" in /etc/X11/XF86Config. If I try to startx it
fails complaining about the font path and having no fixed font. If,
however, I su to root and issue:
xfs -config /etc/X11/fs/config -port 7100 & and then exit back to user
mode and THEN issue startx everybody is very happy. And if I do a ps -ax
|grep xfs, xfs shows up with a port. I pokked around and the code that
starts xfs at boot looks like:
start)
echo -n "Starting X Font Server: "
rm -fr /tmp/.font-unix
daemon --check xfs su xfs -c xfs -s /bin/sh
touch /var/lock/subsys/xfs
echo
;;
Any thoughts on what is going on? As I said earlier, if I go through the
rather ugly procedure mentioned above everything works. Oh yea and
putting the command in .xinitrc does not work. I think root must execute
it.

If it works as root and not as $USER, likely there is a permission
problem on /tmp, or the filesystem is full to the point only root can
write to it. RH has xfs starting as a non-root user.
