Subject: group permissions on main directories.
Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 11:12:55 GMT

Hi,

I've been trying to restrict access to the base filesystem by groups,
but I am encountering problems with various software.

For example what I'm trying to do is get a filesystem like this:
(note the lack of permissions for "others")
drwxr-x--- 2 root fbin 4096 Jul 22 10:37 bin
drwxr-x--- 3 root fboot 1024 Jul 18 09:23 boot
drwxr-x--- 5 root fdev 36864 Jul 27 16:23 dev
drwxr-x--- 31 root fetc 4096 Jul 27 18:54 etc
drwxr-x--- 10 root fhome 4096 Jul 24 16:27 home
drwxr-x--- 4 root flib 4096 Jul 11 00:23 lib
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 16384 Jul 10 23:32 lost+found
drwxr-x--- 4 root fmnt 4096 Jul 10 23:42 mnt
drwxr-x--- 5 root fopt 4096 Jul 27 10:12 opt
dr-xr-x--- 62 root fproc 0 Jul 28 2000 proc
drwxr-x--- 8 root root 4096 Jul 27 18:08 root
drwxr-x--- 3 root fsbin 4096 Jul 11 01:01 sbin
drwxrwx--T 6 root ftmp 1024 Jul 27 18:33 tmp
drwxr-x--- 20 root fusr 4096 Jul 14 17:02 usr
drwxr-x--- 24 root fvar 1024 Jul 26 14:29 var

So only users/processes with the correct group memberships can open the
various directories.

However what I notice is that some processes with the correct userid
(member of the appropriate group) cannot open the directories. I suspect
that these processes are those set with a specific and nonroot groupid.

A possible workaround assuming that groupid is locked (for security
reasons), would be to allow directories to be accessed by multiple
groups. However this doesn't seem possible on Redhat Linux 6.x. The
access controls seem rather coarse and crude- compared to say Novell, NT
or Unix O/Ses with proper acls.

Is there another way of doing this? Are there proper acls for Linux?

I see no reason why processes should have access to much of the
filesystem _by_default_. And not everything can be chrooted easily.

Cheerio,

Link.

To be honest, I couldn't give a toot about redhat's stock.
If redhat can make money out of Linux that's great. If they go bust, it's
not going to make any difference to me, or most of the guys reading this.

I have been. For weeks. Docs aren't really there yet

but the newsgroups have been Real Friendly (at least so far).

Sorry if posted twice, deja.com problem...

Hi

I am putting together video clips to be played back thro' a web
browser, possibly macromedia from a CDrom not from the web.

I am seeking the best video format that is easily playable across three
platforms, mac, windows and linux.

I think that Quicktime might be the best option or maybe MPEG level 1.

Does anyone know the best format for playback within a browser, from a
CDrom across multi-platforms?

Thanks

answering your question by a shortcut: try the moreverb-package under

........{lots of stuff deleted"

Having built two whiz-bang machines and constantly retweaked/rebuilt
a few other old machines in my basement, I thought I'd reply. I'd say
for most people, building their own machine is a good plan only if they
expect to enjoy building it, want to understand their machine better, or
need a machine that is rather far in spec from what they can buy. You
do not so much save expended dollars building a machine as you get quite
a bit better hardware for the dollars you do spend. For a gamer, this
might be hot video cards; for a server, it might be a huge disk drive
and lots of RAM.

It is typical for parts to dribble in. To not get your CPU until
your sound card is passed its 30 day "easy return" limit, and so forth.
If you are expecting that, it is not a problem. If you expect
everything to arrive day after tomorrow (or worse, need everything to
arrive day after tomorrow), you are likely in for a very frustrating
time.

Abit boards and Celerons go very well together, BTW. Are you
planning to try overclocking? :-)

What you gain, apart from the better hardware where you need
better, is a better understanding of how the physical parts of your
machine go together. You are more likely to know where your timing
bottlenecks will be, how to expand your system (from knowing you have 4
IDE slots to knowing you'll have an IRQ conflict if you buy that CDRW),
how to keep it up and running, how to do it better next time (whether
you build again or buy pre-built).

This is worth the hassle for some people. It is not for others.

Not Quicktime; Linux support for Quicktime is patchy (early codecs) or
nonexistent (Sorenson codec.) MPEG is more than likely your best bet,
since everything has MPEG players. Why "within a browser", btw?
Playing a video clip is computationally intensive, and running a bloated
browser at the same time as playing a clip can bring a slow system to
its knees....

All these will work, but, if you want this issue to go away forever,
maybe consider LVM. Logical Volume Management is IN the current 2.4.0
series kernels, and it works. Resize "drives" on the fly, up or down, just
the way AIX and HP/UX have been doing it for years. Still have to move to
a temp, while you mke2fs, but the flexibility it brings is remarkable. It
can build any size "drive" from any number of partitions on any number of
physical drives, and even move from one 'puter to another, intact. I've
only had maybe 6 weeks experience with it, but I'm using it in a number of
places, issue free.

Scandisk cannot and will not write to an ext2fs filesystem. The only remote
way Scandisk could corrupt it would be if the partitions are overlapping,
which is caused by a misconfiguration when partitioning took place.

Scandisk WILL, however, overwrite the MASTER BOOT RECORD if "Check boot
record" is selected in Scandisk and FIX ERRORS AUTOMATICALLY is turned on.
You should never run Microsoft Scandisk in this mode if you are using a
third party bootloader such as LILO.

I love the small foot print and *STEP look of Window Maker, but I also
like the drag & drop functionallity etc of KDE. Basically i was
wondering if anybody had any experience/ideas of using the two together?

At present this is what ive tried:

kfm on loading it loads the 'desktop' giving trash, drive icons etc
there seem to be no stability issues. konqueror works well and does all
its normal, sexy, jiggery pokery
kpanel well it appears and works, and interacts sensibly with multiple
workspaces, the look doesnt interact well which is a shame bcos.........
knotes ive fallen i love with these little beggars, but there a WM nono,
basically you can only view notes you've written in that session, and
since you dont have the kpanel systray their not so accessible.

I havent had any luck so far with getting functionality out of
kclipboard et al

anybody have any ideas/imput any body got a similiar setup running?
