Since you are remapping hda to hdb and hdb to hda, I wonder what would
happen if you told lilo to use table hda and boot to hda1. I can boot
Win95 on hdb, but that is because I have BIOS (CMOS setup) that can change
to any drive as the boot drive.

Do you know what your PATH is when you try to run this from anywhere other
than the console? The env is minimal with the tools you are trying to
use. Either specify the PATH you need, or use full paths for all programs
and files (like /bin/netstat, /bin/date, /usr/bin/lynx).

Why, when I plug my removeable HD into a different computer, will the
computer not boot (not xwin).
Same ram, both intel machines. I thought it was a neat idea!

I have downloaded StarOffice, but I can't figure out how to get the
installer to start. When I log in I am in Gnome by default, and double
clicking the installer icon doesn't do anything.

What is the trick to getting it to start?

Hello all,

I am trying to install Redhat 5.2 in my Intel scsi machine;however, my scsi
card's driver is not on the list and my question is how can I install my
driver??

In SuSe, there is an option called "other", which would let you install
drivers other than the ones are listed. Is there such thing in Redhat???
Thanks

I did that and tried it out, both as a fresh install and an update to an
existing system. The fresh install had a few problems, namely:
1. no option to install LILO on the MBR, leading to difficulty later
2. autodetected 3c905B network card, used 3c90x module for it, which
caused wretched kernel faults on an attempt to ifconfig.
3. ALSA sound driver by default. Sure, it's supposed to be good, but it's
a royal PITA to get working right.

#1 was distressing because the machine I freshly installed on had NT on it
before--therefore, it had no "standard" DOS MBR. Had to muck with a
rescue disk and LILO to get it to boot properly.

#2 was solved by replacing "alias eth0 3c90x" with "alias eth0 3c59x" in
/etc/conf.modules. 3c59x just works, 3c90x seems to have bugs.

#3 was fixed in a similar fashion to #2, using the OSS modules instead of
ALSA for the CS4236 sound chip.

Also, the evaluation image is curiously lacking from my perspective. No
GNOME, no xmms, reported problems with Netscape. RedHat 6.2 seemed to
have more stuff that the average user would find nifty.

Updating an existing SuSE 6.1 system with the 6.4 eval image was a piece
of cake, though, and nothing br0ke. *SHRUG*

I don't know anything about StarOffice, but you should check to see
that the installer's executable permission set?

if you ls -l it you should get something like:

-rwxrwxr-x 1 foo foo 185 Apr 18 13:36 progname

if the first column doesn't have the little xs then you need to
chmod 755 it.

Bad idea. They have the same IRQ and Linux does not share interupts. Put
the mouse on COM2 or change the com3 irq on the serial port card, and
then use setserial to tell linux what the irq is of ttS2

It's my understanding that they run at 33, not 66. It's not a

Thanks for the info MS, I'll give that a try.

One more question please, did you need to manually set any environment
varibles so that gcc could find other libraries (like crt1.o etc). Someone
said I should add "/usr/i586/glibc20-linux/lib" to my LIBPATH, though I
don't seem to have any LIBPATH environment variable at all at the moment.
Could you please tell me if you have a LIBPATH variable and how you see
what is in it.

PS. I'm running a bash shell and if I type "set" it shows me lots of other
environment variables but no LIBPATH.

I have a 9300cx that I tried RedHat and Mandrake to no avail. The
Xconfig crashed no matter what I tried. I then ordered the new SuSE 6.4
and as we speak it is up and running, Xconfig worked right out of the
box, video is perfect - finally a distro that works. Now, if it would
