As far as I know, Linus Torvalds still has a hand on this. You will find a
copyright notice of him in most of the kernel sources, and he owns a
registered trademark of Linux.

The protocol is called NTP. Widely used and quite nifty.

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~ntp/ would be your starting point

On FreeBSD: man ntpd (or xntpd). I expect Linux will have it as well.
Don't know if it's included with AIX but the above link will get you
the source.

For Windows98 you'll have to look for third-party ntp programs since M$
doesn't support standards.

To have different identities, you have to switch to kde2. kmail has improved
a lot.

Hello Pedro,

I prefer to reply here, to help others who have the same problem, ok?

I think you allready deleted your Linux-stuff from your HD (because you
want to remove lilo?

Ok, then fdisk /mbr will restore the original "DOS"-Bootsektor.
The bootsector is not the same as the partition-table (AFAIK)

You will be able to work with your DOS-Partitions and you will have to
fdisk and format the second (old Linux-partition) in order to use it under
doze or windoze.

Hope it helps,

Stefan

No, I'm afraid not. I blew away my boot partition last night thinking I
could reinstall it (boot partition is about 20MB or so, so it's separate
from my other stuff).

I'm not finding the incantation for doing this either -- I'm not a
professional so I don't know this stuff by heart and I'm thousands of
miles away from my books, relying on docs, wit and newsgroups -- in short,
marooned.

So now the questions are:

(a) How do I configure a partition as boot partition (hda6 should be boot
and should invoke hda7 as root); (b) How do I make sure it will call hda7
as root without dropping me into this remounting loop?

I'm going to spend some time today (I'm in Germany) on question (a) and
still seeking insight into question (b).

The stuff I've found on the internet all assumes I am able to get past the
remounting message. I was able to get in using 'linux init=/bin/sh' but
then everything was read-only.

It's what one would need to look at first if indeed "mount -a" gets
stuck. The first suspect would be a nonsensical entry. A
shoot-yourself-in-the-foot entry, for example, would be one that
mounted /etc or /dev from a separate partition.

: (a) How do I configure a partition as boot partition (hda6 should be boot

You don't, but I know what you mean. The boot partition is an
ordinary partition. It just happens to contain a kernel image.
There is nothing special about it at all. It doesn't have to be a
"linux" partition either. It does sometimes have to be below
the 1024 cylinder mark, depending on your boot method.

: and should invoke hda7 as root); (b) How do I make sure it will call hda7

It doesn't. It is the business of the kernel to mount the root
partition, scrabble among it for some initial script, and execute it.
You do that by passing the kernel the root=/dev/hda7 parameter at
boot time. Lilo will do it for you anyway, if you boot with lilo
and you have told lilo to do just that! (i.e. you have a root= entry
in lilo.conf).

You can make the kernel choose the right partition by default, even
without the help of lilo, with rdev. It writes a couple of bits in the
appropriate places in the kernel image.

: as root without dropping me into this remounting loop?

: I'm going to spend some time today (I'm in Germany) on question (a) and

These are non-questions.

So remount it read/write! Problem? You are telling us that you have
none!

Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 11:48:35 +0000

I've upgraded to the latest RH6.2 SMP-686 kernel. Using it, my BP6 with
2x533 Celeries now won't auto power down after printing 'Power Down'.

The previous (same numbered) kernel, but with no SMP, works fine.

The only other difference is that I *think* the non-SMP kernel is the
586 one, not the 686 one.

Is there sopmething remiss with the RH kernel (I won't have time to
learn to build my own for a while)?

Do SMP kernels simply not soft power down?

Should I actually be using a 586 built kernel with my Celerons, and
wwould that help?

I don't know where to start looking in the kernel to see what does it,
otherwise I'd grab the RH src for the one I'm using & nadger^H^H^H^H^H^H^H
patch it.

AFAIK SMP has nothing to do with it (but I might be wrong). Make sure
that you have APM support in your kernel and that "power off on
shutdown" is enabled (it's in the APM support section of the kernel
options).

On a tangent, what are you doing to get the celerons to run dual? I
have the asus BX board (scsi, dual) and a couple of celerons fpga
on S370 converter boards to fit in the socket 1 slots, but
sticking them in there doesn't cause the bios to spot two processors
at bootup! I know the theory ... i.e. that the celerons have had one of
the lines cut which lets the processors swap ID periodically. But I
got the impression that in the fpga package the connection was there
and that the S370 would lead it to the right traceline.

*grin* I sure hope not. That would probably change GMT into RMT (redMond
Mean Time) But yeah, it's easy enough using NTP. FreeBSD has a client
included in the standard distribution even. And a server is available in
ports (xntdp I believe) so one could use a FreeBSD server to grab the
time of the net and have other machines on the internal network sync of
that. I use 'Dimension 4' for W'98 (www.thinkman.com/~thinkman) which
works pretty good and is very easy to install. It is also free. *g*

Um. "Using an ABit BP6". AFAIK, it's the only mobo that allows Celerons

Hmm. Thing is, I've read that APM is incompatible with SMP in the
kernel, and that even if you /try/ to compile it in (which I guess RH
haven't), it disables itself at boot-up.

Is it APM that does it, then?

Surely *someone* has SMP working with soft power down!?!?!?

Subject: Help! Linux router between two NT networks.
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (UM)

Basically I have two networks

192.168.1.0 (255.255.255.0)
and
192.168.2.0 (255.255.255.0)

Instead of buying a Cisco Router I decided to build a linux router/gateway
to talk between these two networks. Its actually a laptop with two 3COM
PCMCIA network cards running Mandrake 7.0.*

After reading the docs I am able to ping a computer on 2.* network from the
1.* network.

However, I want the computers to be visible in Network Neighborhood ... ie.
the NT domain in 2.* should be visible in the 1.* window.

What will that take ?

Thanks!!!!

If I may beg for some help also...

I'm doing pretty much the same setup, except I've implemented plip. NFS over
plip is a cinch. I can mount directories in both directions, giving me access
to resources that can be shared back and forth...

However... When mounting a cdrom from client to server (cdrom already mounted
on server) I get an error:

nfs_read_super: get root fattr failed
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad super block on servder:.. or too
many mounted file systems.

The only two possibilities that make sense to me are "wrong fs" or "bad option".
Both of wich I've looked into in depth and I haven't been able to resolve.
Would anyone here have an idea for me to follow?

Also... Mounting the cdrom on the client from the server, just the opposite
above, procedes normally and without any errors what so ever. I'm able to read
the cdrom just fine... Both machines are setup identically, except where it's
neccessay to be different... :')

This one really has me stumped...

Thanks, in advance.

You can dd the partition to be backed-up, then compress it and then toss it to
tape or whatever.

As for speed... What kind of cable are you connecting your two computers with?
Over here I've been using NFS over plip on a laplink cable. Flawless backup
operations, if a bit slow. I've got it all setup via a couple of scripts... I
just plug it all in, start the scrips and go to bed. Next morning, my laptop
is backed-up to cdr. My seat-o-da'-pants meter says this is all running like
about 2 or 3megs per minute...

If I were to buy a couple of lan cards, this would be a LOT faster... :')

Use DOS booting diskette with FDISK.EXE on it.
At the A:\> prompt type "fdisk /mbr".(no quotes)
