It is! :)

When talking about ipchains, you need to keep in mind that its
actually 2 things:

1. ipchains - the firewall mechanism, which is already in the kernel.

2. ipchains - the program. This is what you run to fill in the data
that ipchains (the mechanism) uses to decide what to do with IP
   packets it received.

If you reboot your machine, the ipchains rules in the kernel that you
had entered is now gone, and you need to "refill" again. That's why
you would need a script to be run as part of your startup sequence, so
that it will "restore" the rules.

You could also try the program pmfirewall which will write out the
ipchains rules needed based on your answers to its questions.

Now with kernel 2.4.x, the kernel is getting a new firewall mechanism
called ... iptables! But, you don't have to throw away those ipchains
rules because the new ipchains program for 2.4 will translate the
ipchains rules into iptables rules.

Best of luck...

Steven

Hi,
my Syslog Daemon has stopped logging to the /var/log/secure file,
when I stop and start the syslogd I get the following messages:

May 3 08:30:08 firewally syslog: syslogd startup succeeded
May 3 08:30:08 firewally syslog: klogd startup succeeded
May 3 08:30:08 firewally kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg
started.
May 3 08:30:08 firewally kernel: Cannot find map file.
May 3 08:30:08 firewally kernel: Loaded 4 symbols from 5 modules.

What is the message in the 4th line, what map file ? is this my problem ?

thanks for every help

Use any decent search engine like http://google.com , enter "ssh" as the
query, pick the obvious choice. Or go to http://www.freshmeat.net and do
the same thing. I thought the first option would be immediately obvious
to even the rawest AOL newbie; guess I was wrong. Remember the second
site; it's one of the first places you should look when you want software
for Linux/*BSD.

Once you've found it and downloaded it,
tar xvzf ssh-X-Y-Z.tar.gz
cd ssh-X-Y-Z
less README* INSTALL (always do this so you don't miss things)
./configure
make
make install (must be done as root)

Keep in mind that ssh2 is the latest greatest thing but some places
haven't updated their ssh1 installations yet. ssh2 is supposed to be
backwards combatible, but I didn't find that to be the case....

The map file referred to here is a text file containing information about
the kernel you're running. It's generated at compile time, and you
usually move it to /boot/System.map. Error messages about missing or
incorrect map files are usually harmless. The main use for the map file
is discovering what happened when the kernel crashes, but stable kernels
don't crash. The userspace program "lsof" makes use of the map file,
though, so you might want to fix the problem.

Check /etc/syslog.conf to take care of the other problem, I think....

RTFM (sorry) , but the manual page clearly says the password supplied
to the -p option must be encrypted before being used as an argument to
this function. In other words, whatever you specify
to option -p will be inserted into the passwd/shadow file as is.

You could for example dig out the pasword field from another passwd/shadow
file and use that as an argument to -p.

My work computer originaly had RH6.0 on it which didn't have a

doesn't have a screensaver.

So how do I turn on the screensaver for the login screen?

I would recommand a number of distributions depending on your desires
and requirements. The ones I've played with and like include Slackware,
Mandrake, SuSE, and Red Hat.

I currently prefer Mandrake on my own desktop, but Slackware might be a
better way to learn if you're willing to be a little more patient.

Since each of those is a relatively complex set of desktop features and

Since each can run the others software for the most part, I'd suggest
trying each one and coming to your own conclusions.

Just to be difficult, I'd recommend AfterStep 1.0. Or icewm. :-)

A bell-labs person has confirmed to me that WP won't work with libsafe
because it (WP) uses libc.so.5. I now unset the environment variable
LD_PRELOAD before calling WP (in an alias of course). You could
try this with xview if your version uses libc.so.5 (check using ldd).
Or upgrade to a more recent version.
