Sorry about this same text posting from yesterday...
Here it is :
For one thing, my modem device is pointing to /dev/ttyS1,
and not to /dev/cua1. This is why I'm wondering if there is
any other setting I have to change to have it understand this.
Two, the way I have been trying to dial is by using the
following command :
exec pppd connect \
'chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chatscript' \
-detach crtscts modem defaultroute \
user dirk \
/dev modem
Yes, it is a hell of a command, and I am really not
sure about the "user dirk" part... don`t know what it does.
I am sure there is a way to automate this connection command,
but for now, I just want to actually connect and be able to
ping and traceroute here and there.
My chatscript reads exactly as follows :
timeout 5
"" atz
ok atdt2289675
abort "no carrier"
abort busy
abort "no dialtone"
abort waiting
timeout 45
connect ""
timeout 5
"name:" ppp
I have tried pppd with the -v option, but I get
disconnected right away, and the messages file
says that the option -v is not recognized.
I have tried pppd with the debug option, and
this is what came up in the /var/log/messages file:
May 4 19:46:25 localhost pppd[541]: pppd 2.3.7 started by root, uid 0

I have a parallel Iomega Zip 250 drive which I would like to be
recognised by RH 6.2 (PC is dual boot W95 / RH 6.2) I followed the
Mini-HOWTO on Zip Drive but 'insmod ppa' didn't work - I got errors
relating to parport_??? functions.
I followed the Mini-HOWTO and rebuilt the kernel but still got the
same error afterwards and now I get an unresolved symbols error on
boot-up.
After reading the Kernel HOWTO and a few mailings on the Red Hat web
site, I came to the conclusion that I need to configure things so that
parport and ppa are loaded into the initrd (ram disk) at boot time but
confusingly, the files mentioned in the postings didn't exist on my
system so I'm not sure how to do this.
If anyone can tell me what I've done wrong, if my hunch is right and
what I need to do to get the Zip drive working and resolve the boot
error, I'd be most grateful.
Robin.

With respect to the second case, I think you have to edit a file
'etc/resolv.conf'. Entries are of the form
'nameserver <IP Address>

That and it's much, much easier to install NT after Win98
than Win98 after NT. NT detects DOS/Windows 3.x or Win95/98
when installed, and allows you to choose dual booting.
Win98, on the other hand, just overwrites the master boot
record with it's own boot loader.
When and if you get the NT boot loader working after the
Win98 install, linux should still be an option (assuming
you edit NT's BOOT.INI file rather than overwrite it). That
being the case, you may want to ask this in a Windows setup
newsgroup.

Can some one send me a generic example mgetty.config file for I can review
the various 'chat' settings.
==================================================
I'm running RH5.1 Manhattan & mgetty 1.1.14
The modem is a genuine Hayes 14.4 by 14.4Fax External - model unknown
My inittab file reads: F0a:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/mgetty -x 3 ttyS0
It loads okay - no fatal errors - no respawning, etc
The error log </var/log/log_mg.ttyS0> says it does not like my 'chat'
settings.
Can anyone give me an example of generic chat setting for a Hayes data modem
<I don't want to do fax> I've been reading tons o' man pages and HOWTOs,
which have helped alot with earlier problems already solved, but are a
little shy of example chat settings.

Other interesting notes:
- There is no "policy.h" file on my system.
- My /usr mount is 100% full
- The /etc/issue file exisits but is not displayed, at all.

The braodcast address should probably be 10.0.0.255. 10.0.0.0 is the
"network" address when you're setting up a private network like that. The
command is usually expressd as:
ifconfig eth1 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 broadcast 10.0.0.255 up
Check the NET3-HOWTO at http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/NET3-HOWTO.html for more
info on what the "broadcast" and "netmask" and "network" bits actually
mean...

Hi, I am going crazy trying to find xmkmf. Maybe I am looking in
the wrong places. Tried a web search, linuxberg, tucows,
google.com. None of them gave me a link to download it. I just
want to install xpmlib and xfree86.
Why the use of Imake files instead of the traditional make files
with the ./configure | make | make install commands?

Your broadcast should be 10.255.255.255.

One way to do this is to find out which processes are part of "normal
operation" and then do this:
ps auxw | grep -Ev 'init|kswapd|kflushd|kupdate|syslogd|klogd' | more
Add more processes to the expression between the 's, separating each one
from each other one with a |. There are probably other ways, some of
which could work better, but that should get you started...

Probably because the ZIP 250 uses the imm module, not the ppa module. Try
that and see what that does.
Also make sure you have the lp module accessible ("Parallel Printer
Support"). I couldn't get a parallel port ZIP 100 working without that
module. HTH,

I guess RedHat comes with that, doesn't it? I use it since 4.2 and I
always do a "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to reboot the machine or a "halt" to power
