Very vague question... and if you want to use PHP... u must install
either the PHP executable for the server to access or mod_php and not
mod_perl

PHP is certainly faster than Java, but Java allows for more complex
applications, these functions are not needed though, and plus, PHP is
easier to learn.

I would still go the way of Perl, I think perl cgi's are by far the best
method to interact with a database server / generate pages
dynamically... but chose yourself.

I hope that you have compiled SCSI into the kernel, not modular. Otherwise,
where can it find the module to load it?

Two possibilities are DNS failure (or delay) or incorrectly configured
response to the auth service. If you don't provide auth you should deny
it, not just ignore it, or servers using that service will be slow.

Looking at some of the responses, I am disappointed to see that
so many Linux enthusiasts don't understand the malign effect
Microsoft has on the market. Microsoft has followed a policy
of either trying to impose its standards or taking over existing
standards by adding features that work only under Windows. It
is fine to talk about Linux beating Microsoft in the marketplace.
But what are all us Linux users going to do when only Microsoft
products can effectively use the common standards? What are
we going to do if you have to use Internet Explorer to make
effective use of the internet, and there is no version of that
browser that works with Linux?

Current versions of Linux could hold their own in the current
marketplace if one could easily buy a PC with Linux already
installed and all the important applications there. Linux
would not have the problem of trying to deal with Winmodems
and other incompatible hardware if manufacturers did not assume
the only market they had to sell to was the Windows market.
Microsoft with its dominant control of the marketplace can
effectively kill Linux any time it wants unless it is brought
under control. It would have started doing so already except
for the Justice Depoartment suit.

From: Chris Stump <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RedHat 6.2 install questions
Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 10:35:29 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a couple of questions, and I'll make 'em straight to the point:

1. I currently have Red Hat 6.2 set up on my system using the
partitionless install feature (on Win98). This actually works quite
well, but I can't figure out how to mount/access windows files. I can'
t use "mount -t vfat /dev/hda(or hda1) /mnt/vfat" because linux tells me
the filesystem is already mounted or that there is a "bad super block,
etc., etc." Is it impossible to access windows files through this
partitionless install? If not, how do I access them?

2. If I can't access the windows files with the partitionless install
then I would like to repartition my HDD and install Red Hat 6.2 in its
own partition. However, I have a 19 GB HDD and I don't want to install
Lilo (bad luck with lilo...its a long story--I would like to use a boot
disk). If I do a custom install (which will give me the option not to
install lilo) will I not run into the "1024 cylinder" problem? I
installed Red Hat 6.1 before on a re-partitioned HDD and I ran into the
"1024" problem. However, I was doing a workstation install which
automatically uses lilo to configure a dual-boot system. Since custom
gives me the option to/will not install lilo, will the installation let
me put linux on the last 4GB of my 19 GB HDD, leaving the remaining 15
GB for Windows? Obviously the linux boot sector will not be below the
1024 cylinder, but I'm assuming that this won't matter since I will be
booting off of a floppy and therefore I am not asking installation to
place lilo...am I correct?

3. What is the word with partition magic 5.0? Is it significantly safer
than FIPS? I used fips before and it worked great, but I'm still a
little leary. Also, what is the deal with the boot agent that comes
with partition magic? Is this a hassle-free boot agent that is friendly
to the windows and its MBR? Does is overwrite the existing MBR? I
imagine it would...

4. Does anyone use bootlin? It sounds like an interesting alternative
to lilo, but I haven't heard to much about it. I basically would like
to use a boot agent, but not one that overwrites/complicates the MBR (I
had major problems with this before, and can't afford them again:)

Thanks in advance to all those who reply...your help is very much
appreciated.

I quote the following from Unix 98. You may want to download it from
http://www.opengroup.org/online-pubs?DOC=007908799

Additionally, each command of a multi-command pipeline is in a subshell
environment; as an extension, however, any or all commands in a pipeline
may be executed in the current environment.

I read that as indicating that bash complies with the standard and
relying on that kornism - I regularly do - is non-portable.

You may like to push the authors of bash on it as a quality of
implementation issue.

I don't really understand how separating /home into a separate
partition makes backups any easier. What's the difference between
backing up a partition or just backing up a directory and all its
contents?

xfs runs as a non-root user, so having the FS maxed would indeed be a
problem. It creates a dir structure in /tmp, and creates it's socket
there. Remember part of the filesystem is reserved for root only.
Typically this is 5%. You need to keep some free space available.
Probably a good idea, regardless of this situation, since other apps may
have the same problem.

Subject: misc questions
Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 16:11:03 GMT

Here are some questions:

o I am a RedHat 6.2 user.I started using linux with RH 5.1.
I have problems not only when I try to install source-form
programs (that have yet to be compiled) but also when
installing .rpms.My problem is about libraries, in fact it
seems that there is always some little incompatibilities
or missing files (but sometimes they are in the right
place!), so especially with programs that don't come bundled
with the distribution cdrom, it seems that RH displacement
of things is not very standard. This happened since RH 5.1.
But it could only be my ignorance.
There is a Library-HOWTO?

o I am currently obliged to use XFree86 at 75 Hz of
Vertical Refresh rate, and resolution 800x600 because
my card is only supported via FBDev.
My monitor is a 15".
I know that 800x600@72Hz is a VESA standard, so it probably shouldn't
be eye-fatiguing.Is 75 Hz enought?(Please don't answer
simply something like "if you eyes support it...").

o How I use the X window system clipboard to cut/copy/paste
like in win?

o I use things like Netscape or GNU-rpm or the GNUMidnight
Commander, and I notice that the buttons (like the stop
icon of netscape) are very spaced and wide.Is this caused
by a bad configured character definition file (I use
fvwm2, so it is system.fvwm2rc) or something else?

o I am using a partition of about 800 Mb, using about 450 Mb.
I would like to kill unused packages and libraries, what
is better to attack first (is bigger ?)?

o I use consolechars to get big characters (since my display
is always in 800x600), and i choose lat4a-19 in my system.
Where can I find bigger chars?(not in my own system, there
I now where char fonts are!)

o How I set a transparent background for the xclock?

Thanks.

All HOWTO documents are available from the LDP at
<URL:http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX-3.html>.

Use the left mouse button to select a piece of text. Use the middle
mouse button to paste the selected text somewhere else. The middle mouse
button may be emulated by pressing both right and left mouse buttons at
once on a two button mouse.

Files with the 'doc' suffix are probably from MS-Word on a Windos system
an may be read by Applix or Star Office if you're lucky.

Subject: Bios and HDD ? HELP

I need help with BIOS ,, can anyone point me to the right newsgroup/
website for this info?

I am trying to install a 13Gb HDD on an i430 VX board (only detects
8.2Gb approx.).
I have downloaded a Bios flash/update thing. (awdfl763.exe).
I ran it from dos, then got error prompt saying : it can,t find the
source file.
I don,t know what file that is.??

And will that help detect the hdd anyway?

bios details as follows:
 Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
  04/08/97-i430VX-877-2A59GV79C-00
 (2a59gv79)
Chipset: Intel 430VX rev 2

Any help appreciated
thanks
Matthew
