have you set up the name servers ?
in resolv.conf, there should be atleast one entry.
Add
# Primary DNS server from ISP
nameserver xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa
# Secondary DNS server from ISP
nameserver bbb.ccc.ddd.eee
If your ISP is nice, they will tell you the ip numbers .
Otherwise you will have to find out the IP's some other way.
Or you could enter IP's of a well known DNS server
try pinging a well known site
$ ping www.yahoo.com
If that fails with "Unknown host" or something like that,
then you need to set DNS
try pinging some well known ip numbers , and if that works, the ppp link is
working, but you don't have DNS working.
What happens when you type in a website's address :
1) Browser takes that and sends to some known DNS server whose address is in
the dotted quad notation ( like 207.106.98.24 - that's a random number I
picked out of the air. )
it says ,
"Hey ,207.106.98.24, Give me IP address of www.yahoo.com"
2 ) DNS server replies , giving the ip address of the site
"IP address of www.yahoo.com is 207.167.98.10"
3) Now your browser tries to contact 207.167.98.10 , and you get the
default page.
Probably you just have to plug in the ip address's of the DNS servers. into
the resolv.conf file, just under " nameserver 127.0.0.1" ( 127.0.0.1 is a
number that refers to the loop back interface i.e. it refers back to you )
good luck.

Dave,
I have Slackware4.0 and am unfamiliar with 7.0, but do have a Epson Stylus
600 printing at 360x, 720x, and 1440x on my system. For the best printing
and colors you should be using the .upp drivers instead of the old
stcolor.ps. There are several for the different resolutions. I hacked by
copy of apsfilter to allow all three resolutions and then setup the same in
the /etc/printcap.
As I said, I'm unfamiliar with the utilities available in 7.0 and this may
all be more automatic, but I'll be glad to send you my apsfilter and
printcap files for you to see if you email me. If need be, you could take
the applicable portions out of mine for your use.

I LOVE IT!. Wonderfully productive environment. Sawfish seems
lighter on resources than E, and I want to run it. I MISS the iconbox

thingies, not E specifics. What are their names, and how can I get them

I have a bit of a problem with the keyboard.
Here goes:
I use the numeric keypad's arrow and functions so much that I turn off num
lock .
In Linux , I chose the US keyboard
Now, I can use the arrow keys ( and the END, DEL HOME etc.. keys )to the
*left* of the numeric keypad just fine, but the numeric keypad sends me to
some other tab while in gnotepad and does not behave as expected.
So , how would I go about changing things so that the END , home, pgup,
pgdown and the arrow keys work on the numeric keypad ?
Is it just a matter of selecting someother keyboard type in kbdconfig , and
then setting X to use that same type ?
TIA

you will want to subscribe to the linux kernel (l-k) mailing list. be
prepared -- it shovels an *unbelievable* volume of mail at you.
alternately, just send in your question to l-k and follow the
responses
<URL:http://www.kernelnotes.org>
describe your problem in more detail, especially mention your
hardware, e.g., motherboard/chipset and disk drive interface. check
your logs (like /var/log/messages) and see if anything likely looking
turns up. send it in to l-k.

matlab (and every other software package) requires its excecutables
and shared libs too.
with a bit of porting effort, you may even get octave to compile in
microsoft visual C++ and fortran.
neither matlab nor octave seem to require internet explorer so that is
a relief.

Use the 'print command' option in smb.conf to run a custom script that
logs the print job and then calls lpr. Very easy.

but your odometer starts at 0. traditionally, years start at 1.
however, you are free to make your own interpretation. why not just
add a year 0 AD *before* 1 AD. fill in with negative AD years for
past events. thus
2 AD
1 AD
0 AD = 1 BC
-1 AD = 2 BC
now you have a system with
1) same current year as now.
2) starts with year 0.
3) 2000 really is the new millenium.
4) doesn't conflict with old nomenclature (0 AD and -42 AD have
unambiguous meaning).
5) the year of jesus birth being somewhat unknown anyhow using 0 AD
instead of 1 AD is probably not less accurate.
btw if 25 dec is (at least officially purported to be) the birthday of
jesus, how come the year doesn't start until nearly a week later?
thus even with the traditional reckoning, jesus is born during 1 BC.

Subject: Slow reponse to http, ftp and telnet

hello all,
We have a network of 4 RH Linux servers, 2 have 6.0 others are running 6.1.
One of the RH 6.1 servers responses very slowly to internet requests, be they
http, ftp or telnet. Often time, it takes 3 to 3.5 min for ftp (wu-ftp 2.6.x)
to display the welcome message and equally long for telnet to show the login
prompt. Some ftp clients just could not wait that long and timed out after 2.5
minutes.
Httpd's responses vary. Sometime very quick, but often it takes so long that
the browser times out.
However, when we ftp or telnet from other Linux servers in the LAN to this
problem server, we get connected almost instantly (in 3-4 seconds).
What can be the problem? If the network card is faulty, then it should not
response to other Linux servers in the LAN so quickly. Am I missing something?
Thanks for any suggestions or insight. We really appreciate that.

Since when did <conio.h> become a standard header file on GNU/Linux
systems? As far as I know, <conio.h> is only available in the Borland
compiler on Windos systems and it has *never* been a standard header
file (the C standard doesn't know about consoles, but that might not be
a real issue in this NG).

This is a problem I've had for a few weeks.
I think it first came about when I installed the 0.16 release of
Enlightenment.
The problem occurs when I'm scrolling up or down a window. Randomly a
line will vanish from the window I'm scrolling in and then appear
somewhere on the screen.
I hoped the problem would go when I upgraded to RH6.2 and GNOME1.2 but
the problem still seems to be there.
I'm using SAWFISH at the moment not enlightenment and my graphics card
is if I remember correctly an ATI RAGE 3D.
I assume the problem is with XFree86, but has anyone seen anything
similar?
Duncan
p.s The reason I haven't just upgraded to XFree86 4.0 is it was a bit of
a hassle getting the graphics card to work in the first place. I
therefore don't want to go through all that if I can avoid it.

No, time *is not* money. Time is time.
My time is worth a lot. Time I "waste" (note quotation marks!) on design
is worth a lot, just like the time spent writing code.
However, equating designing and authoring software to designing and building
a bridge would only be reasonable if I had to actually *pay* for each keypress,
and each compiler run --- the way I'd have to *pay* for each bag of concrete
and for the services of the people pouring the concrete.
I don't. If the job is to write a piece of code to do a given job, and I am
the one writing it, then *how* I spend my time doesn't matter at all, just
*how much* time I spend. It doesn't really matter what I *do* during that
time --- whether I design, or code, or meditate in preparation.

Try adding this line as the very first line in all your /etc/resolv.conf files:
hostresorder local bind
That might just do it - I know it worked for me when I was having the same
