Urgh. In case that you have the choice - get a different ISP. Now.
Try adding the "asyncmap 0xa0000" option to your /etc/ppp/options file
as an intermediate solution, but I'd strongly suggest getting an ISP
with a fair amount of clues. Having an asyncmap of 0xa0000 is _very_
strange, and doesn't give me a lot of trust in ISP's operations.

What I do is pipe it through 'colcrt' which removes the special
stuff. Just text then. If you do it often, you could make a
special command script for it, like 'mangrep' or something.
Here's the top of the colcrt man page, piped through the command
itself so it won't look funny here:
COLCRT(1) BSD Reference Manual COLCRT(1)
NAME
colcrt - filter nroff output for CRT previewing
SYNOPSIS
colcrt [-] [-2] [file ...]
---- ---
DESCRIPTION
Colcrt provides virtual half-line and reverse line feed sequences for
terminals without such capability, and on which overstriking is destruc-
tive. Half-line characters and underlining (changed to dashing `-') are
placed on new lines in between the normal output lines.
Available options:
- Suppress all underlining. This option is especially useful for
<snip>
I also use this below to grep sentences, instead of just lines.
Might be of use. Uses gawk. Perl would probably be better for its
better regex's.
#!/bin/bash
##############
#senten - run awk script to grep out full sentences. (joe)
if [ "$#" != 1 ]
then
echo 'usage: senten regex'
exit 1
fi
nice awk "BEGIN { RS=\".\" ; IGNORECASE=1 }
(/$1/){ print \$0\".\", \"\nxxxa-------------------\" }" | less -M
#### cut here #####
This uses the shell $1 for the regex, which is why it uses "BEGIN
instead of ', and the \'s to protect awk's stuff from the shell.
RS is the variable for record separator, if you don't want
regular lines ends for that. I presume (don't know) Perl can do
about the same thing as easily. Or a little harder, but better
probably.
It works for me using bash and gawk. Some awks don't have
IGNORECASE.
( This reads/writes standard i/o. So, need to pipe or <> it.
Like, 'man vim | colcrt | senten parag'
Or, man vim > file1 ; senten parag < file1 )
Seems to me on BSD this doesn't work where the regex crosses line
ends in a sentence, but it does on Linux. Anyway, still useful
for me either way, since it shows the whole sentence associated
with a line.

I am completely stumped by this:
Installed RH6.2 on a PC that previously was running RH5.1, but with
new disk, all other hardware the same. Video is a Trio S3 on teh
motherboard.
Used the graphic installation and specified KDE Workstation.
After all was completed the system restarted and during that there was
a brief show of a character based login. But before I was done typing
in the login the screen disappeared completely into a black
nothingness!
Can't do anything here. Except I tried to login blindly by first
typing root then TAB then the root password. This started some
activity showing the system somehow is acting 'normally' except
nothing is displayed!
Tried to redo the installation as an 'Upgrade' (Why is there no
'repair' option?) to preserve what I did before, but no good - still
the black screen.
Why does the screen disappear, there is a perfectly good graphics
screen shown during the setup sequence???

Dan, Thanks for your reply but I'm not sure if I understand what
you mean. Are you saying that:
a) the programs that claim to block porn sites are so ineffective
that one shouldn't bother with them
b) the programs are pretty good but not perfect (this is my
impression of the situation, btw)
c) it's too difficult to determine "objectionable" sites on the fly
and that's why programs rely on precompiled lists
d) something else?

Although I've coded procedural languages in the past, I'm not up to
this task yet in Unix. Although it sounds like an interesting project
for the future, before I give up on filtering I think I'll try
downloading and installing NetNanny for a 30 day free evaluation.

Subject: Installing From the Hard Drive ... Problems
Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 15:30:12 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to install Redhat 6.1 from a hard drive.
The problem is that I don't know how to get the files
from the cd on to my hard drive.
I tried to use Windows Explorer from Win95 to
copy the entire cd on to my hard drive, but the
problem is Windows Explorer won't copy
the "translation table" file in each directory from
the cd. When it tries, it comes up with an error.
What is this translation table anyway?
Is it necessary?
I could try to copy everything without
these translation tables, but there are
many of them and it doesn't seem
to pay to try to do it.
When one uses the hard drive install method,
is it assumed that one does the initial cd to hard drive
copy under Linux? If so that would seem to take
away the advantage of the hard drive install.
Fortunately I don't have to do a hard drive install
because my cd drive is recognized by Windows and
Linux. The reason I want to do it is to speed up the
install, because the hard drive is faster than my
cd drive and I also want to reduce the wear and
tear of the starting and stopping motion of the
cd drive Linux installs, since I do a lot of
Linux installing.
I have read the instructions on installing from
the hard drive, but there doesn't seem to be
enough detailed information about the actual
copying of the files from the cd to the hard drive,
nor how to do it.
Thanks
Mike

Hmmm... I just installed it under SuSE 6.2, and it started fine, but came up

fine...

I had a fiddle with it using SuSE on a new machine I'd been given that had
no floppy or hard disk... I booted the CDROM, ran the rescue system, and
mounted two as /usr/X11R6 and /usr/bin, then rpm'ed the relevant X packages
and a window manager...
The machine had 64 megs of RAM and it did quite nicely. I didn't do anything
WITH it once I'd got the window manager running though because the SuSE
rescue system only has three ram disks, and they were all nearly full and it
wasn't worth finding out how to create more ramdisk /devs.
It is possible though, and if you created a rescue floppy with big ramdisks,
it'd be relatively easy.

Maybe it's cos you were misusing -q (not supplying further switches) or
maybe your rpm database needs a rebuild.
rpm --rebuilddb will do that.

elm is a mail READER. If you want to download mail, you should use
fetchmail, which passes the mail to your MDA, which is then readable by elm.
sendmail -q will then send out any mail you write.

I'm trying to setup this scsi pci card and I hope somebody correct me if
I'm going wrong somewhere.
These are the Kernel Options:
- SCSI SUPPORT
- SCSI GENERIC SUPPORT
- SCSI LOW LEVEL -> ADAPTEC AIC7XXX
Is this OK ? Do I have to add any parameter to lilo.conf ?
