I got the Britannica CD and have run it under Windows 3.1 (it just barely
supports Windows 3.1, but that was the last peice of Microsoft Software
I ever put on my computer). It's been awhile but as I recall it installed
some special shared libraries (or DLLs as they call them) special drivers
to allow netscape to browse their filesystem. There is an emulator for
windows under linux, WINE, but when I tried it, it couldn't cope with the
exoticisms involved. It's been awhile though, and possibly WINE has
advanced to the point where it would work, though I doubt it. Still, some
day when I've got time on my hands, I may try getting the latest version
of WINE and trying it again.

That's because FREEWWWEB doesn't use cleartext logins or cleartext
authentication. You have to set up PAP authentication to be able
to use their server. This results not in a shell login, but a PPP connection.
As for what do we want for free, well, to the person who added that
comment to the discussion you've got a point, but OTOH if it's not
usable there's no point in having it at all. Apparently in some regions
it IS usable, but my experience in the Boston area is that it isn't.
My query to support about their system performance didn't elicit any'
*useful* answer and last time I tried it (week or two) it was still
unusable.

For the console see: man setterm
Not sure where Linux sets this but you can put a /usr/sbin/setterm
statement in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
For X check its screensaver settings.

Then they are not too smart, since most computers with energy saving
features can automatically power down the monitor when idle.

What sort of problem are you having viewing long filenames? I don't have
any trouble with 'ls' in Win95 FAT16 or Win98 FAT32 in RedHat 6.1. But in
my main /etc/bashrc I have the following so I can tell the difference
between files and directories in color:
alias ls="ls -F --color=auto"
Maybe you are just not aware that to access a file or directory that
contains spaces you have to escape spaces like: cd Program\ Files

SuSE to RedHat... most appropriate to call that regression. I don't blame
you for 'trying' another Linux distribution - or other OS' (I also use IRIX
and Solaris on a daily basis... and have tried Solaris x86 and OS/2 on my
own machines) but your comments are very appropriate. RedHat has more
marketing/brand-name recognition - but is definitely *not* one of the better
distributions...
I've used RedHat 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, and limited 6.2 - and I only
install RedHat 5.1 when given a choice on very old hardware.
Otherwise... I've used SuSE 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4, Caldera 2.3, and
Slackware... and have become a bit of an evangelist among my own friends
about *not* installing RedHat... and recommending SuSE.

Yes, but it doesn't handle multiple-files-in-a-.zip. (It does do a
single file, though.)

Subject: windows95 DUN/linux samba/tcp problems?
Date: Sun, 04 Jun 2000 09:56:45 GMT
At this stage I'm not asking for solutions to this, just to know if
there is a potential problem here...........
I have 2 boxes, one running Win95 and one running RH linux. I'd like
to think about networking them together, with the RH box as a file
server. I understand that I will need Samba to allow the boxes to
communicate, and that they will use TCP/IP to do it. My plan would
therefore be to use the 192.168.1.xxx scheme for use on internal
networks as each machine will need a fixed IP address.
However my win95 machine has an attached modem and is given a dynamic
IP address by the server when I call my ISP. It seems to me that there
will be a problem here with the fixed IP it will need to network with
the linux machine and this Dyn IP when it needs to dial out.
Is this problem surmountable, or am I trying to solve a problem that
isn't really there? If I've missed the blindingly obvious, please
don't hesitate to tell me :)
