Well, on my RH 6.1 system, _dl_symbol_value is defined in
/lib/libc.so.6, which is a symbolic link to /lib/libc-2.1.2.so,
which is owned by the RPM for glibc-2.1.2-11.

So I would suspect that libjava.so is OK, but libc.so.6 is goofed.
Which does seem unlikely, since lots of things use libc.so..
But I would suggest checking libc.so.6 first. Try doing
"nm /lib/libc.so.6". Is _dl_symbol_value defined in that library?
What RPM owns libc.so.6 on your system? (Find out by
"rpm -qf /lib/libc.so.6".) If RH 6.2 was recently installed,
probably things haven't been screwed up yet, but I don't know
what else to look at.

Hope this helps,
Robert Dodier

Do you know what partition Windows resides in? If not, put on your root
suit and run fdisk (look at "man fdisk" if you're not sure how).

Then, check and tweak your /etc/lilo.conf. For help, look at "man lilo",
and/or check out the Lilo Howto at:
<http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/LILO.html>

Finally, (again as root) execute /sbin/lilo.

If you still have problems, try posting the fdisk output and your
/etc/lilo.conf.

Use Perl:

Wrong. In Redhat 6.2 I get the same thing, except with a 64MB and a 32MB
RAM, and the BIOS definatly see's 96MB. But when my machine boots up to
linux, if I don't have mem=96MB as an extra kernel option, linux only sees
the first 64MB.

Try deleting all your home ~/.gnome* files and directories. This will
cause Gnome to start up next time in its default configuration, and you
can tweak it from there.
When I upgraded I had similar troubles to you -- I think Gnome1.2 was

How do I send a formfeed to the default printer?

I sometimes print out snippits of text and the paper
is left halfway in the printer so I want a simple command
to eject it.

I'd like to do this with an alias like
   lpr -someoptions some_char_string
or cp a file with a formfeed in it.

I've gotten a lot of printout with \L, ^L etc but nothing
seems to produce an actual formfeed.

Pardon me for asking this dumb question but I've read a lot of the
printer and lpr documentation without seeing anything that helps.

Hmm - Imagine a tiny country running "free" Linux on board ship having their

Windows.... might never get published in the international press, but it
would sure score one for the free software community...!

I use vim for these purposes, however you might want to check out
Screem (a very good all-round tool, still in development but
sufficiently stable for most of the stuff), Bluefish (never used it
much, but I guess it's not much more than just a plain editor) and
perhaps even CoffeeCup, but it's shareware, so WTF.

See one of the popular linux repositories like freshmeat.net,
linux.org, etc. for more.

Most features of www.webmuffinlite.com work on linux. Some of the links

You could just bash your head against the keyboard for a while. You will
get HTML output about as good as FrontPage.

A text editor (I like XEmacs) and some custom scripts to keep things in
order. The old version of mine is available at

I iron out the bugs.

Normally you arrange that when configuring the printer. Since you did
not tell what release you are using, and I am familiar only with Red
Hat Linux, I will tell how to do it with RHL.

   * In an xterm, as root, type control-panel. A button box should
     come up.
   * Select the Printer button (third one from the top on my machine)
   * Another box should come up. Select your printer from the list
(will probably be only one printer listed).
   * Press the Edit button. Edit local printer entry box should come
     up.
   * Press Select on Input Filter line. A Configure Filter box should
     come up.
   * Under Printing Options at bottom right, check the Send EOF After
     Job To Eject Page box.
   * The OK your way out, etc.

There is undoubtedly a way to do this with the normal Command Line
Interpreter, but I forgot the name of the command.
