Thanks for so much good advice (except for the guy that called me arse).

A lot of my problem is getting a feel for the way things are done, and you
all have helped.

Ah and you are right, I omitted the -f on my tar - makes a big difference. I
thought when I used it before that you could omit. This was under QNX. maybe
I just don't remember correctly. Obviously, I am not the UNIX guru, but I
like all good technology.

I will give the EMACS a try. If there is one thing I have learned over the
years, there is elegance in simplicity. I nice IDE is a thing of beauty
though, but there is more than a couple of ways to skin a cat.

I am in the process of trying to get apache running, so I can access and
search all my docs via http.

Thanks again.

Don't worry about what's allowed and what isn't. Essentially, they don't want
you using a "residential" connection for commercial uses, especially spam
generation. I use telnet, ftp and a small web site with not not much traffic
and have never had any problems. If they notice heavy traffic to/from your
site, they may come after you.

If nothing helps, try to get a grub bootdisk from somewhere. Grub is
another bootloader with the advantage that it does not work with
blocklists as lilo. Instead, it knows about the ext2 filesystem
(and others as well) and can find the kernel via its entry in the
filesystem. Thus, any grub bootdisk can boot any linux computer
(really great).

You can find more information on grub at
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/
and although they declare it being unstable, it is very stable
right now.

Bye,

Ummm... This ServerName line does absolutetly nothing.

You can restrict the "default" server to particular names using
either SetEnvIf and Deny from env= or the directives in mod_rewrite.

1. It is probable that it does not all fit into a 64 MB disk.

2. The Flash disk does not like to be written often. You should create a RAM
disk and set your /var directory there.

3. Very probably you cannot use any swap partition. You need a hefty amount
of real RAM to support C (or C++) compilation without a swap area.

I'm not sure what your asking here but I think its that you want to start
both apache servers 1.3.12 and 1.3.14. (why you would want to do this is
beyond me)

You can edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local and add the line to start apache
(apache_dir/httpd)

Also you must realize that you cannot have to apache servers running on the
same port. Make sure you change the ports for the servers so that they are
different in the httpd.conf file.

I hope this is what your asking if not just reply.

I manage to get through installation of libgd AND GD.pm with no
problems, I also made sure I pointed to the correct places
for the ttf lib/include ... basically, I don't get any errors
on compilation/installation.

However, when I try to run a cgi-script using GD.pm, i keep
getting the error 'libgd was not built with TrueType font support'
...even though it was!

All my other choices work fine, like using jpeg images...can someone

Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 10:50:57 -0800

Hello. I've just upgraded to KDE 2 and realized that it doesn't install
itself by default to /top/kde so that I've had to change the /etc/inittab
file to load kdm from elsewhere.

In /etc/inittab/ I believe the line is:

id:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon

or something close to that...by this I mean the path to kdm (it does find it
correctly)...that I changed. When the screen pops up saying:

Red Hat Linux 5.2
localhost running on 2.2 kernel...
login:

it then pauses for a second and then says:

INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 minutes

Why is this happening and is there an easy fix? Thanks much in advance,

  Jason

This usually means that the process which is to be spawned (by
the issuing of "/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon") is dying because of an
error of some kind. You have to figure out what the problem is,
after which when it is fixed, the "respawning" etc. error will go
away.

I can't help you with why you have an error; the corresponding
line in my (KDE 1.x) /etc/inittab is:

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 19:49:21 GMT

I have solved it ...as there is a crash when I upgrade the kernel, I reboot
and install back the old kernel, which seems to have some package name
undeleted, thus causes problem. I have removed via rpm the newer
kernel-header (which report many file not found) and install back the old
kernel-header and it works!

However, when I rpm -q kernel, it reports 2 versions,

kernel-2.2.16-3
kernel-2.2.14-5.0

The 16-3 one is the crashed one which should have been replaced by 14-5 (the
one I surely is working right now). My question is ...how can I remove the
16-3 from rpm list? Will it remove my existing 14-5 files?

On the 29th of November 2000, I wrote:
[lots followed by]

I finally got the thing to work, so I'm posting to help people like
myself that use dejanews to look for problem solutions.

After a day or two I decided that I really needed to reboot to
start out with a clean slate, so to speak, module wise. Tuesday
this week I finally found the time to reboot.

Sure enough, a few simple insmods (probably 'insmod backpack' and
'insmod pg', I should have taken notes, oh well) got me nice results:
from 'dmesg':

        paride: version 1.04 installed
pg: pg version 1.02, major 97
        pg0: Autoprobe failed
        pg: No ATAPI device detected
        paride: version 1.04 installed

paride: backpack registered as protocol 0
pg: pg version 1.02, major 97
        backpack: LPT 0378, Mfg NatSemi[16]
backpack: ID 20, Tx EPP (Dword)
        pg0: Sharing parport0 at 0x378
        pg0: MITSUMI CR-4802TE, master

It then took me some playing around to figure out the magic
incantation to 'cdrecord' to get things to work (slowed down
by forgetting to run cdrecord as root at first). 'cdrecord -scanbus'
found the drive at position 0 of bus 0, so the device for
cdrecord is 'dev=/dev/pg0@0,0,0'. (The -checkdrive option
came in handy.)

As I said in my previous post, I got this drive second hand.
In the previous machine (Win NT with Easy CD Creator) the
drive also had exact one error when making each CD, always
the same error, and always the CDs worked. (Those errors
where why I got the drive in the first place.) That remains
the same using 'cdrecord'. From 'cdrecord':

[... near the end of the output ...]
        Fixating...
        /usr/local/bin/cdrecord: Input/output error. close track/session:

I know that fixating is the last step of making the CD, can someone
explain what exactly it does?

if i read your post correctly it might be b/c the data got written to
your drives that the files that were deleted or actually no longer there
and therefore df is catching up to the correct amount of disk space
available after previoulsy have the disk usage in cache and the cache
needed flush.

its plausible but i dont know if it can happen or if it actually did in
this case

you could change the DocumentRoot of the Defualt server, or put a dummy
file in the document root the redircts the visitor to the site.

Right. That is a better answer than mine.

Make a "dummy" vhost that does nothing but catch requests that
don't match any other vhosts. Of course, it must
be listed first. It shouldn't matter what ServerName you
specify, as long as it doesn't match any other server.

Have installed RedHat Linux 7.0

1) Went into setup--> System services and made sure that ipop3 is check
marked

2) Verified that pop3 is listed in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf

3) Rebooted

I still can't see any indication of my POP3 server running? How can I
troubleshoot this?

Subject: LUG Talk Wishlist - Need speakers! (Davis, CA)
Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 20:49:02 GMT

LUGOD, the Linux Users' Group of Davis, located near Sacramento, California,
is in need of speakers for upcoming meetings.

Our group meets on the 1st Tues and 3rd Mon of each month at 6:30pm in
Davis, California. Our February 19th meeting (and those beyond) are
currently topicless. (See: http://www.lugod.org/meeting/upcoming/ for
an up-to-date list of scheduled topics.)

We are currently quite interested in talks on the following subjects
(see: http://www.lugod.org/meeting/wishlist/ for an up-to-date list):

  Compiler Design
  Linux vs. Other Unixes
  Linux vs. Windows
  Linux's memory utilization
  The POSIX Standard
  Using autoconf/automake
  Setting up sendmail/smail/qmail
  VMWare / Win4Lin / WINE demonstrations
  Using MySQL
  Gnutella
  PHP
  CVS
  Kernel Hacking
Functional Programming (LISP, ML, etc.) under Linux

Of course, any topic is welcome! (For a list of previous meetings'
topics, see: http://www.lugod.org/meeting/past/ )

If you're interested in speaking at a LUGOD meeting, please contact me
at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

LUGOD is a non-profit organization. Unfortunately, we currently cannot
afford to pay for airfare or room-and-board for our speakers.
However, if you're located near the San Francisco Bay Area, we're only
a few hours away! :)

Thanks in advance.

Please explain the reasoning behind running both versions
