If you are using LILO and your image name is "linux", type

linux single

at LILO prompt.
System will boot up as single user mode. So you can edit your rc files.

I have problems installing RH 6.1 on a 40 GB IDE disk.

I installed Win98 first and after trapping into the <1024 cylinders
problem with bootable partitions have to be within I created
a 2 GB / , 16 MB /boot , a 4 GB DOS and a 500 M swap partition.
The rest of 30514 MB were made a /home partition.

I did that all with the GNOME installer booted via a NFS install
disk. (the boot disk was from the redhat site and contained already an
upgrade which as it seems doesn't fix the problem)

Check its not a winmodem. If it is, it won't work under linux.

If U have KDE installed, kppp is very useful when it comes to setting up dialup.

I noticed that you mentioned that Microsofi Internet Exploder isn't
available on platforms other than "Microsoft operating systems". I know
that it is available for Solaris, and the last time I checked, Sun
Microsystems wasn't owned by the great holemaster willy Gates.

Your approach is kinda backward IMHO. HTML, Java and XML formatting has a
place in the new world of the Internet. Just because you support legacy
applications, that doesn't mean that the world has to stop forever... I use
pine to check mail and sometimes use tin and lynx for browsing that thing
them folks call the Internet... and yes it is an inconveniance when
anything but raw text hits them... I also use and have limited respect for
Microsoft products. Of course an x86 box running NT or WIn95/98/2000 will
never have the functionality, performance or uptime of a sparc or alpha with
unix, but thats a discuession for another day... I use every platform
(including your famed Linux) and have uses for them all (AFAIK if you ain't
got UltraSparc, you ain't got shit). Just because of these facts, IE and
Outlook have there place in the "normal" world... Give it time and even my
parents will be using Solaris or BSD instead of Win98, and StarOffice
instead of Office2000 (maybe a few weekends from now, If I get a chance to
flatten their PC and straighten it out). As for me by choice right now, I
am using one of the NT PC's here to post this, as I find Outlook Express
best for news reading... and I do find that Netscape has not been as good
as IE for the past 2 or 3 sub-versions. shoot me for this if you want...
{;-)

As for the transmission of viral payload, check your sister, I heard she
carries a fair share... (yes I agree on the virus issue and several other
points, I like the idea of common formats, I hear that Access 97 & 2000
databases aren't compatible with each other, how can a 3rd party be
compatible with it then??). So when was the last time you edited a
Postscript file? it is actually a neat language, ya dink.

"think before you act"
Rantin' is my way of starting and ending the day...

get routed to the individual users. I can use sendmail to send mail to local

Thanks, I downloaded the programs. Shortly after I posted the
original message I decided to try slowing the memory from
133MHZ to 100MHZ and Linux has been up ever since. It seems
my Micron 133 stick is not really 133 or else there is some
other problem. Like I said, there has been no crash under
OS/2 and WinNT so far with the higher settings. Could Linux
be tougher or less refined on memory access than the others
if the stick is not bad?

Switch to the directory in which you want to unzip it, and:
tar -xvzf yourfilename.tar.gz
The unzipped archive will contain installation instructions.

tar zxvf file.tar.gz (or tar zxvf file.tgz).

The netscape install is pretty crapy, because there's actually no
install program. Just "cd" to the created directory and execute the
binary.

Looks like you tried to execute "hello", but your executable is named
"--hello". So, either try it with the dashes and/or do what some other

Make sure your kernel has enabled support for "a.out binaries". If the
libs are where they are supposed to be, they don't have to be loaded
or declared additionally.

Two years ago, I switched from a P75 to an Cyrix 200MX running under
Linux. I made some benchmark-tests (nbench2.2) and the Cyrix
outperformed the P75 in every task. It had a FPU performance of the
P133 and a Integer Performance comparable with a P233.

I had the feeling, that it was a good bit faster than the P75,
everything running smoother. (I have to admit, that I changed the
motherboard with the CPU, maybe that had an effect, too) I'm still
running the Cyrix at home, and am glad with it.

Well, to be mean: At work, I have a Enterprise 4000 with 6x166Mhz
procs and 3Gig Ram. Emacs and tex are faster at home! (Well, no
network, no other users, emacs and tex allways in RAM ...)

Hello,

but it dies at the point where you get to make a selection on what
type of installation you want ( Workstation , Server, etc. ) I've also
not been able to install 6.0 on it. I'm starting to believe that the
problem lies in the fact that I have an SX frame buffer ( 8 MB VRAM)
instead of some other more common frame buffer. Any one successful
in installing RedHat on a machine with this frame buffer ?

I saw in another thread that you lost the partition table. If you want
you can do:

findpart all +fat fp.txt

and mail fp.txt to me. Can you mail from the location of the problem
PC?

If Linux fdisk is used for recreating a partition table, then note
that fdisk in normal mode numbers cylinders from 1, while everybody
else, including Findpart, numbers cylinders from 0.

Also note that making entries for extended and logical partitions can
damage data if it is not made correct in first attempt.

you can fetchmail to talk to sendmail and have sendmail do the local user routing, or

run fetchmail as root, maybe from cron, maybe when you feel like it or as a daemon
but first PLEASE check the fetchmail docs for use and abuse of multidrop mailboxes

you will probably want a
user fubar with password guber to * here (if its an aliased thing)
or maybe
user fubar with password guber is fluber here
user greebo with password weedo is needo here
etc etc
for individual boxes in your .fetchmailrc

there is a FULL and worth reading set of info on how all this works and what it means
in the fetchmail docs

just running in daemon mode would not solve this particular problem, you will need to
stick more stuff in the
.fetchmairc file too

If the docs are no help to you, please post more information next time for a better
answer

I forgot where I say it, but there is one huge ascii drawing of TUX. If
you look really closely, you'll see that the letters used, read the source
code of some kernel version. Really cool.
