Some are. ISA modems with lots of jumpers work best. PNP ones can be a

Given the bandwidth limitation of the RS232 port, a *high speed* RS232

Subject: Can't load Linux
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 18:30:07 GMT

Hello
I have just installed linux onto my computer. The first time i started it
linux loaded into the text mode. After that first time i loaded linux, i
always get this same annoying error:

/dev/hdc3 contains a file system with errors, check forced.
Error reading block 516141(Attempt to read block from file system resulted
in short read) while doing inode scan.
/dev/hd3:UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY:RUN fsck MANUALLY.
        (i.e., without -a or -p options)

After this it can log in as the root user but i do not know what fsck is
or how to use it. Then when i log out or hit control-d my sytem reboots.
Is fsck like scandisk for windows? Because i was have to run that all the
time for this harddrive when i had windows installed on it. I would
greatly appreciate it if some one could give me the necessary commands i
need to use to correct. Please be as detailed as possible because i just
started using linux. I am using Linux Mandrake 6.0. It is on a western
digital 4.3GB harddrive. I have 128Mb pc100 ram and AMD-K6/2 500Mhz
processor. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hello
I am using linux Mandrake 6.0. My system boots up fine in text mode, but
whenever i type startx to load kde it doesn't work. Like kde starts to
load but not everything shows up. I am able to see like the tool bar at
the bottom of the desktop and just various other pictures but all the
background and text do not show up. I have tried to run Xconfigurator and
xf86config several times but this never fixes my problem. I have a
SiS6326 AGP video card with 8MB ram. I have a generic monitor 17inch
monitor(digital AutoScan color monitor) that can support resolution up to
1024x768 pixels non-interlaced by maximum 85Hz rate. The maximum display
resolution 1280x1024 pixels non-interlaced mode. The monitor
automatically scans horizontal frequencies from 30 to 70 KHz, and vertical
frequencies from 40 to 150Hz. I would greatly appreciate it if somebody
could write down the correct settings for me to install because my system
always fails the test it runs in set up. Thanks for any help you can
offer.

You don't mount extended partitions, you mount the logical partitions
contained within these extended partitions--just like the error message
says! What does "fdisk -l" tell you here? There should be one or more
logical partitions sitting at /dev/hda5 ... /dev/hda63, and I'll bet that
you can mount one of those without problems.

If no logical partitions exist within /dev/hda2, fire up fdisk and create
some, then mke2fs them and put stuff in them....

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /win98

No need to mount it read-only; Linux can read and write FAT32 without
problems and has been able to for a long time. You *can* mount it
read-only by adding a "-o ro" to the end of that command line, or by
modifying /etc/fstab so that "ro" is in the options field for that
mountpoint. man fstab and man mount for more details.

OK, The problem was I had not setup the pop parameters. Once I did that the

newsgroups.

It keeps saying that it can't find the newsgroup servers!!! I've tried many

back to Windows to do this (sight).

Your help will be deeply appreciated.

DSL is a technology, so it does not care about OSes. Maybe what you want
is a DSL ISP that 'supports' Linux? What this usually means, is that
they will help you troubleshoot your connection, etc. Most ISPs that I
am aware of, do not support Linux in this context. But, then again, they
don't care what OS you use -- you just have to support it yourself. But
that is kinda the Linux way anyway. Most don't care about NAT or proxies
either, and I wouldn't even bother to ask about this. Servers may be a
different problem, something you would have to check on an ISP by ISP
basis. And even this may depend on what you are doing. My ISP has a no
server policy -- but just about everybody I know is running a web server
or more. They don't seem to care about low-traffic, personal sites. I
think their main concern is commercial type traffic.

I just installed RealPlayer 7 for linux without a problem. The problem is
that eventually when I want to do other things the bottom toolbar freezes
and other applications too.

The first time it happened I could'nt even log off or reboot the system. I
was forced to do a cold reboot (boy that hurt!) Luckly linux worked again
with no problems. But when I ran RealPlayer 7 again the whole thing was
going on again. When I noticed this I closed it and eventually everything
went back to normal.

Is this a known problem with RealPlayer? Any way to fix this?

Subject: Creating a LAN router
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 19:41:25 GMT

Hi,
I am the sysad of a Hostel with 15 computers connected in parralel
to a 24 port hub which is in turn connected to the campus LAN.

Now I want to make sure that I have some amount of control over the
data transfer ( more specifically I want to create a proxy server
firewall) . Now since the computers are connected in parralel , it will
be a difficult to do this. But I was wondering if I could make one of my
computers a router and thus accomplish this. For example , whenever a
request for a http connection (through any web browser goes out ), I
would be able to direct the request to a proxy server for
authentication.

Can anybody help me on this.
Thanking you in advance

Sandy

Any modem will work as long as it is not a winmodem.

Linux is not attempting to start anything. Just because you left it out
of the kernel doesn't change your system configuration. You will need to
turn off the NFS deamon from starting, usually you can do this through
linuxconf.

That was reported be a bug in kpp, something about how it probed the
kernel for ppp support. Try a new version of kpp.
