Hi all,
I have figured out how to remap my keyboard at the console, but
whenever i enter X windows, it reverts to the original layout (with some
keys in bad locations). I would like my re-mapped board to continue to be
re-mapped even when i'm in X.
any help will be appreciated.

It is attempting to perform a DNS lookup and waiting for it to time
out. On this machine it triggers a demand-dial on an ISDN line and the
lookup completes. You can suppress this by arranging that it gets an
immediate "network unreachable" error to the lookup attempt. Basically
if you do an
ifdown <interface>
then it will get an immediate error as the DNS query cannot be routed
and your troubles will softly and suddenly vanish away. Doing an ifup on
the same interface will restore normal service.
For the server was a boojum you see...[1]

Subject: gnome file manager question..please help
When I double-click a .zip file using gnome file manager that was created
with Windows WinZip, the file manager "goes into" the file, but nothing
shows up. Much like if it were an unmounted file system.
Why is this? Is there a way around it? The gnome file manager must be
aware of .zip type files because it displays them with their own icon. I
can't find anything in the mime types or elsewhere to help me out.
Please respond via e-mail if possible. Thank you very much.

Hi,
I am running XFree 4.0 with the nvidia beta drivers, and I seem to get hard

happen if I use only fvwm, but it does with other window managers (Gnome

Jose, you did not compile the NFS server kernel code! Reconfigure your

code. Then the NFS server configuration option will be available to you.

Haha.. this list is WAY too long, not like the Linux list of what.. 3 or 4

I will try CodeCrusader and G++ (argh), but I don't believe they'll be more

The question remains if it's actually necessary to do a spindown ?
An actual spindown/spinup causes a lot of wear and tear by itself on a
disk.
And even a good config will probably get you about 5 spindowns/spinups a
day, so maybe it's better to just "leave it running".
It might be interesting to get the manufacturers opinion. Quantum was

Hey - speaking of flying planes, that reminds me of an Operating System
story. Might be an old story, dont't know, but here goes -
UNIX Airways
Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come
to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the
plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what
kind of plane they are supposed to be building.
Air DOS
Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump
on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again.
Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ...
Mac Airlines
All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents
look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions
about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't
need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done
for you without you ever having to know, so just shut up.
Windows Air
The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards,
easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After
about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning
whatsoever.
Windows NT Air
Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes,
and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius
when it explodes.
Linux Air
Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to
start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters,
and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to
cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download
and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you
are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the
seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is
very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without
a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to
tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but
all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

Use xntpd instead of cron and netdate. It'll only update the clock when
it needs to be sync'd up, rather than trying to force it every minute.

Depending on what distro you're running, you may already have it. Here's a

Subject: Annoying oddities after kernel compile...
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I recompiled the kernel for my workstation leaving out the NFS server
service, but when I boot up I see "nfss FAILED" (or something to that
effect). Evidently, Linux is attempting to start this service even
though it was left out of the kernel. How do I correct this problem?
Also, on a previous compile I chose to configure PPP as a loadable
module, but when I started kpppd (the KDE dial-up utility) I got a
message "either PPP is not compiled into the kernel or the module was
not loaded" (or something to that effect). Nevertheless, the dialer
worked fine and the PPP service was started. I assumed there was a
problem with KDE recognizing the loading of the module, so when I
recompiled as above I also compiled PPP into the kernel to get rid of
the error message. I still get the same error message. Any ideas on
how to correct this?

Subject: moving the kernel and modules...
I'm wanting to compile a fresh kernel and modules on one machine, then move
them to another. I've been unable to find documentation on how to do this,
nor can I untangle the makefiles. Can someone give me some tips on how to do
this, or point me to someplace where it's documented?
I guess what I'm looking for is an explanation of what #make modules_install
and #make install do.
Thanx for any help...

Have you ever had a dialup connection using Linux with that Modem? If
not, then I have a sneaking suspision that you have a WinModem. If this
is the case, throw it away and get a proper modem.
Otherwise, use lspci -v to determine the port and irq of your modem, and
then setserial /dev/ttySX port <port> irq <irq>
where ttySX is the serial device you are using, <irq> is its irq number
and <port> is the port address.
Test this by typing wvdialconf /dev/null

Subject: Re: Blocking news servers?
Actually, the reason I ask is because I'm not able to access some news sites
even though I can access others with no problems. The departmental machine is
a Linux box and I'm wanting to familiarize myself with things before I approach
the sysadmin with my access problem.
The exact problem: I can ping news.vmware.com but I can't actually
access for reading with xrn, krn, or Netscape's news program. I always get the
message
"Failed to connect to NNTP server"
I don't have this problem with the local uni sites, so my news access is
definitely site-specific.
Smells to me like the sysadmin has the news.vmware.com site either
blocked out or not explicitly allowed. I want to check my facts first. Things
generally go more smoothly when I can talk specifics...
Any opinions?
Thanks,
Ken

Subject: How do you connect to an Intranet?
I run SuSE Linux 6.3 and win95. I am
able to connect to my University Intranet
using Win95 through my isp. I was given
instructions by my University on how to
access their Intranet if you are using
Win95. There was no instructions about
if someone was using linux. My University
uses NT as their server. Does any one
know the procedure for setting up a connection
to an intranet using linux.
