With kernel 2.2.16, compiling the eepro100 into the kernel (not as
a module) does not seem to work. The following messages appear in
the dmesg:
eepro100: wait_for_cmd_done timeout!
Copying the eepro100.c file from kernel 2.2.13 and recompiling
kernel 2.2.16 appears to work.
The eepro100.c in 2.2.13 is "eepro100.c:v1.06 10/16/98 Donald Becker",
while the one in 2.2.16 is "eepro100.c:v1.09j-t 9/29/99 Donald Becker" and
"eepro100.c: $Revision: 1.20.2.10 $ 2000/05/31 Modified by Andrey V. Savochkin"
(both strings are given in the 2.2.16 eepro100.c).
The configuration is fairly simple and generic:
Intel Pro/100B (PILA8460B) ethernet adapter with Intel 82559 chip
Asus P3BF motherboard with Intel 440BX chipset
Intel Celeron processor in adapter
64MB memory
ATI Xpert 98 video card
Fujitsu IDE hard drive
CD-ROM drive
3.5" floppy drive
Keytronic PS/2-type keyboard
Logitech PS/2-type mouse
SuSE 6.3 Linux (other than kernel)

Use "chown -R 0.0 /path/to/directory/" on the directory it unpacked
into. This will set owner and group to root for all files in the
directory. Be sure you include the / on the end.

That depends on the needs and the service. For instance, upstream
speeds with ADSL are typically in the 90-1500Kbps range. That's plenty
for a *MODEST* web server, FTP server, or personal e-mail, but
certainly insufficient for most corporate or high-volume systems. I
certainly wouldn't want to put up Linux CD-ROM image files on a 90Kbps
link.
> You will probably be violating TOS
> with cable and all the other ISP services.
With most, but certainly not all. My own provider (Speakeasy) explicitly
allows servers within certain parameters (for instance, no porn sites).
> You would be better off getting a commercial SDSL account for this.
> This is cheaper than a T1 and will give you enough speed for very low
> volume traffic.
If the main purpose of the connection is to function as a server for
protocols that mainly pull data from your system (such as web and most
FTP servers), then yes, an SDSL link is probably a better choice.
Business-class accounts that allow you to run servers are also much
easier to find than are residential-class accounts that allow you to run
servers, too. If you just want to run a low-volume personal web page,
though, and use the connection mostly for downloading stuff yourself,
ADSL can do the job nicely.
None of which should be taken as condoning the original advertisement
or endorsement of the advertised service.

If you wipe out all Linux partitions you might not even able to install NT at
all until you boot MS-DOS and 'fdisk /mbr' then the LILO prompt goes away. I
also had NT as FAT at /dev/hda and all Linux at /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc. I remove
the two drives but retained the NT drive I couldn't boot at all until I booted
with MS-DOS emergency disk and 'fdisk /mbr'. This made me convinced that NT
does not or can not update MBR nor whack LILO, contrary to some claims.

I'm not getting sound in my VMWare installation. The option to install
it is greyed out. I have a Aureal base Turtlebeach Montego sound card
which works with the OSS driver (somewhat). However, it is not loaded
at boot time - is that the problem? I've tried loading the OSS driver
before running VMWare but that didn't help.
(I still have the trial version so I haven't tried this yet).

Add a line like this to /etc/lilo.conf right after the default=OS line.

At the lilo prompt enter "linux 3" this will take you to a text console.
You can reconfigure X and then use startx to see if it will work. If you
want to disable X at boot time until you get it configured the do this:
vi /etc/inittab
change the "5" in the line below to a "3" write the change and quit.

5. Memory
All memory like DRAM, EDO and SDRAM can be used with Linux. There is
one thing you have to look at: normally the kernel is not supporting
more than 64 Mb of memory. When you add more than 64 Mb of memory you
have to add the following line to your LILO configuration file.
append="mem=<number of Mb>M"
So, when you have 96 Mb of memory this should become
append="mem=96M"
The "lilo configuration file" is /etc/lilo.conf.

It has option in VMware windows to enable sound device.
ALL sound cards that work with OSS will work under VMware at sb quality.

I doubt if it makes any difference, but have you altered
your compilation sequence, to see if you get better results?
For example:
make dep clean modules modules_install bzImage
and then copy bzImage to /vmlinuz?
Also, did you run depmod -a right after compilation?
Later in the boot process, make sure that kerneld
(or kmod??) is started, so that modules can be
loaded as needed.
Another thing you might want to try is this: when you
you run makeconfig (or whatever you use to set how the
kernel will be compiled), try building a bare-bones, stripped
down, just-the-absolute-essentials kernel. Like, leave out the
sound support, network stuff, joystick, etc, etc. (you get the idea).
Leave out anything that is not essential to the goal of getting a
login:, password:, and shell prompt on your screen!
Make sure you have support for your boot drive (SCSI or IDE?),
and the filesystem (ext2fs ?) compiled in the kernel, not modules.
In fact, when you run your configure script, don't compile
ANYTHING as a module (paradoxically, you SHOULD still compile
in the module support); compile everything into the kernel. Once
you have a minimal kernel that will at least boot, you can then start
adding more features back to your configuration, as well as compiling
some things as loadable modules (you don't want too big of a kernel).
I'm no expert, just a person who has walked in your shoes :) The main
thing is to keep your kernel as lean and simple as possible until you
can actually get it to boot, then start adding the bells and whistles.
Good luck, I hope you can solve your problem soon.

If you lack 'man' and 'at', then you probably should switch
distributions the first chance you get. 'man' is an online help
facility, and 'at' is an ad-hoc scheduler program. Both have been
essential to Unix and it's derivatives from day two (on day one, there
were the AT&T gurus ;-) )
For a distribution not to install 'man' or 'at' would (to me) indicate
an amount of negligence on the part of the distro's editor, and I'd
wonder what other essential tools had been left out. Perhaps, these
tools were included in your distro, but not installed due to the
installation choices made. If so, then perhaps you should install them
as soon as you can.
As for 'shutdown -h sometime', remember that this prevents user logins
between the time the command is entered and the time the shutdown is
executed (i.e. 'sometime'). This _might_ be important.
