Thanks, will try that too. It is only a debugger with
GUI, not a disassembler though.

This fits my observations using a Linksys PCMLM56 combo ether/56K PCMCIA I
have. On a Gateway Handbook 486 (~25MHz) the ether does fine but the modem
just can't seem to get along. It may also be related to IRQ conflicts, but
don't have any problem with either modem or ether on a 586 (~300 MHz). BTW
the Handbook UART is a 16450 according to dmesg at boot.
I suppose I could verify this with a slower modem on a combo card, but the
toy fund is running low for the year already... :)

Anyone know of an add-on parallel port board that doesn't need Windows

In KDE 1.x I just used kfm for my file transfers. Can't you do the same

What about /etc/bashrc? Aliases and things should be done in that or
their ~/.bashrc not in profile or .profile which is just for logins.

By default, there is a directory called /etc/skel/ which contains dot
files like .bashrc . When a new user is created, these files are copied
to the new user's ~ . When tcsh (csh is a link pointing at tcsh under
Linux) starts up, it sources /etc/csh.cshrc and /etc/csh.login first,
then sources ~/.login and ~/.tcshrc . If PATH is not set anywhere in
those files, then PATH is a string that depends on the system tcsh was
compiled for. At least that's what the manpage says.
(csh? Yuck. Suffered with it under Solaris for 6 months before someone
told me about "exec /usr/bin/gnu/bash". tcsh is at least mostly usable.)

30 seconds with Google to find that it can do 1024x768 at most. HSync
and Vsync are a bit trickier. Say that it can do 1024x768 @ 60Hz for
starters. This prearranged setting, or one very like it, is in
XConfigurator, SaX, and XF86Setup.
If you're new to this whole thing, configure exactly one resolution, the
resolution you'll be using most of the time. The way X handles virtual
screens is not what most people expect, and very annoying to many
people. A small minority, however, love it, and it's not changing
anytime soon because it's the way X works.

You seem to like to do things the hard way. The easy way is to load the
file into StarOffice, select a PS printer, and print to a file. You can
even do this in Windows with Word if you have a PS printer installed.

I did not know that you can run gFTP in KDE. Now I see that if you have

the military contractors have been living with it for about five years.

ok, how about this?
i'd love to take a windows NT disk and replicate it with my cd-r and
sell copies for $10. however, if i did it on a large enough scale,
the government would kick down my door and throw me into prison. it
seems no one else but microsoft are allowed to sell NT in this
country. that is a monopoly. and, in addition, one enforced by
threats of violence against you from your own government.
i am sure that back in the day of the match monopoly (in sweden)
people objected and said, that's not a monopoly, you can still rub two
sticks together if you need a fire.

Sounds like you need to configure your hostname to match the mx record.
I don't have an mx record, but simply set my hostname to my internet

Subject: mounting software raid
I started with a reiserfs partition on a disk. I wanted to mirror it to
another disk so I set up the software raid level 1 on it. When I ran
mkraid the disks were busy for a while and when it was done, there was a
copy on both. Now I can mount either disk as /dev/hdb1 and/or /dev/hdh
and see all the files in place. However, if I make a change to one, it
is not affected on the other. I assume I acutally want to mount the new
raid device /dev/md0 that was created. I can't seem to mount it tho.
It asks for filesystem type and I don't know what switch to use. Can
anyone help me or point me in the direction of a better howto than the
one at linuxdoc.org?
Thanks.

Hello,
I downloaded Jakarta-tomcat-3.2.1 and followed the installation instructions
religiously. I compiled apache, ApacheJServ until I came to the point where
it generates the Java classes (static compilation), then when it was compiling
JServConnection, I got a whole pile of java errors about classes that should
be declared abstract and warnings about deprecated classes. Probably the
deprecated stuff is not that critical, but the compilation fails at what I
think is the last point of it. (The total is 3 errors actually)
Has any one come across that before? or any ideas?
Thanks

I've never heard of a parallel port that needed Windows drivers. What
would that be, a "WinPort"?
Any standard parallel port board should work fine, although if it is not
at the standard LPT2 address you may need to pass a parameter to your
kernel to tell it the IO port and IRQ. I forget the exact syntax as the
machine with the weird port is at work, but the "parport.txt" file in
the Documentation directory of the kernel source is the place to look.

The zeros mean that the filesystem need not be checked for consistency at
startup and that the filesystem need not be periodically dumped, respectively.
A 1 in the first position signifies that the filesystem should be checked first
(you'll generally only want to specify this for your root filesystem). A 2
specifies that it should be checked after any partition with a 1. I don't
recall offhand the details about specifying dumps, but you might look in 'man
fstab' for information.

If you're upgrading from 2.2.16 to 2.4, you *must* do make modules; make
modules_install. The reason is, 2.4 has reworked the directory structure for
modules. It's mentioned in one or the other of the text files, maybe README or
CHANGES, that distributes with the 2.4 source.
Also, watch out for your firewalls, ipchains, etc. Some of the things that
weren't modules before are now, and some of the modules have changed names.
Dual-booting during testing of your new kernel configuration may require some
funky scripting in modules.conf and various other conf and rc files.

Nick, I hope you don't mind this. In the interest of better communication, I'd
like to clarify what you've been saying.
Copyrights and patents are, indeed, government-granted monopolies. This is from
the strict definition of "monopoly" to an economist, narrowly defined. IOW,
MicroSoft has a monopoly, sanctioned by the government, on sale of the Windows*
operating systems.
This does not mean that their *effective* monopoly on *all* PC operating
systems is government sanctioned, as Aaron seems to think you are saying. It
is, rather, a result of MS use of "market power" (another piece of economist
jargon that means more exactly what most people think momopoly means) to stifle
competition.
I hope this clarifies the issue a little for everybody.

Hi,
I ran the harden_suse script and all was well, until I wanted to
undo_harden_suse.pl like the manual said and surprise it was never created.
I searched all over the system. Can anyone suggest why the undo script
wasn't created and what to do now? Any help is appreciated. BTW SuSE 7.0,
2.2.16 and I did do the rpm update for Perl sometime ago.
