I made three simple questions. I asked why what you said implies
Qt is not free. I asked if there is a XFree port to MacOS, and
I asked if XFree is free. I am not representing anything, much
less misrepresenting.
Let me explain in short words what is this technique I am indulging on.
It's called socratic dialog. I ask you questions that should, when you
reply to them, show the obviously wrong nature of your position. The
idea is that you reply, and then everyone sees how stupid your argument
is.
Then again, refusing to reply works just as well.
> So, I can be quite certain I am not confusing you for me.
Well, I hope you don't!

specification

But there is no port of XFree to MacOS. You say that the lack of
a Qt port to MacOS is evidence of Qt not being free. Explain why
you are applying a double stabdard on what is free software.
> Although Xfree86 itself has been ported to OS/2.
Cool. Qt is partly ported to microwindows.

Are you saying "yup, glibc is not free"? If you are not, learn
to write.

And glibc is owned by the Free software foundation, and XFree is
owned by the XFree consortium. If you want to say that Qt is not free,
you should say things about Qt that are not shared by ALL OTHER FREE
SOFTWARE. The only software not owned by someone is public domain
software.

Pfft. You need to take your medication and stop reading Adam Smith.

Cool, because Qt (unlike, say, glibc), works on just about every
unix out there, and is technically portable to any OS, as long
as someone bothers porting.

Did a bit more digging and found this snippet:
#include <stdio.h> /* Standard input/output definitions */
#include <string.h> /* String function definitions */
#include <unistd.h> /* UNIX standard function definitions */
#include <fcntl.h> /* File control definitions */
#include <errno.h> /* Error number definitions */
#include <termios.h> /* POSIX terminal control definitions */
/*
* 'open_port()' - Open serial port 1.
*
* Returns the file descriptor on success or -1 on error.
*/
int
open_port(void)
{
int fd; /* File descriptor for the port */
fd = open("/dev/ttyS1", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY);
if (fd == -1)
{
/*
* Could not open the port.
*/
perror("open_port: Unable to open /dev/ttyS1 - ");
}
else
fcntl(fd, F_SETFL, 0);
return (fd);
}
and this:
n = write(fd, "ATZ\r", 4);
if (n < 0)
fputs("write() of 4 bytes failed!\n", stderr);
and it works fine - whoopee !
I'll work on the C first and then I'll try getting the gtk working.

Hello,
I have two Fast-Ethernet cards on my desktop: eth0 (Kingston tulip)
connected to Alcatel SpeedTouch ADSL modem and eth1 connected to
Fast-Ethernet hub going to my IBM Thinkpad. I have the eth1
network working great between my Redhat 6.2 desktop and Mandrake 7.0 IBM
Thinkpad using a
SMC Fast-Ethernet NIC for my Redhat 6.2 eth1 and a AmbiCom 16-bit
Fast-Ethernet PC Card
for my Mandrake 7 eth0. I can play mp3 files resident on my Redhat 6.2
desktop very nicely
on my Manrake 7 IBM Thinkpad Dock2 speakers using NFS through the
Ethernet lines.
Now for the problem: I can do everything fine as Root on the Redhat 6.2
desktop as far
as getting on Netscape and surfing, retrieving email, etc.; however, as
a normal user I
can only surf the web in a KFM window; however, when trying to open
Netscape Communicator 7.2
as a normal user I get a "bus error" when done through a Unix shell
prompt.
Does anyone have any knowledge why in Redhat 6.2 Root can access
Netscape fine but a
normal user receives a "bus error?" I do not necessarily want to load
Mandrake 7.0 or
7.1 on my desktop to solve this problem.
I will appreciate any advise.
Best regards,
Terrio Echavez

Subject: GNU Autoconf+Automake vs. No linking (Just compile)
Date: Sat, 1 Jul 2000 23:23:49 -0400
Hi,
I am trying to write a simple autoconf and automake scripts just to compile a C
program to an object file (or the object module for Linux kernel) without
linking stage. Here is my configure.in and Makefile.am scripts:
configure.in:
AC_INIT(testing.c)
MODFLAGS="-D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -DEXPORT_SYMTAB"
AC_SUBST(MODFLAGS)
AC_PROG_CC
AC_PROG_INSTALL
AC_HEADER_STDC
AC_CHECK_HEADERS(fcntl.h sys/ioctl.h)
AC_C_CONST
AC_C_INLINE
AC_CHECK_FUNCS(strerror)
AC_OUTPUT(Makefile)
Makefile.am:
bin_PROGRAMS = testing
testing_SOURCES = testing.c
testing_LDFLAGS = @MODFLAGS@
After running the aclocal, autoconf, and automake, I type "make" and the
process starts to compile the testing.c to testing.o. Then, the linker kicks
in to link the testing.o to a binary testing file. What I want is just to let
the automake compile the source to a Linux module object file.
Any idea on how to do it? TIA.

No. I do mean cat /dev/sndstat
NOT cat /proc/sndstat NOT cat /proc/asound/sndstat

Hello,
My workaround to this same problem on my desktop was to excute /usr/sbin/kppp
& from a unix shell prompt
which brought the 6.1 way of executing kppp.
Also you can use the 6.2 Redhat ppp dialer for a "normal user" to dial out.

Can it be hacked? Yes - definately. What he/she can do? Just about
anything from looking around to rm -rf *.
If you don't need telnet loose it immediately. Run ssh instead.
Or even better, if you need telnet loose it immediately. Run ssh
instead.
What you should do for starters is
1/ Run a hardening script on the server. D/l Bastille Linux and run
it.
2/ Install some tracking device - e.g. Tripwire.
3/ Keep up with security patches - e.g. do you run BIND? Get the latest patch.

You run Win2K on a that? I'm not surprised it sucks.
NT server would suck. No NT/Win2K server should have less than 128M to
run. To do anything usefull on the other hand .... And a P200MMX?
A bit like reversing the Mindcraft fiasco ....
