Subject: Help, I think. I broke pppd or ttyS0:
Date: 05 Jul 2000 18:12:45 EDT

I am running RH linux v6.0, and using Netscape, some recent version (not
6). The other day I was on line and managed to freeze linux. No mouse
response, no nothing (including any of the keys on the keyboard, alone
or in combination, but I must admit that I didn't really try all 2^101
key combinations), except the reset button on the box itself. OK, I can
handle having things freeze up occasionally, and this is really the
first time linux has done that to me on this machine. However, when I
brought the machine back up, and attempted to run pppd, it gave me an
error message something like "Unable to open /dev/ttyS0: Permission
denied". I do have the suid bit set for pppd, and when I did ls -l for
/dev/ttyS0:, I found the pattern crwS********* (I've forgotten what the
remaining fields had in them). Apparently the property "S" (as
contrasted to "s") means that the setuid bit is set, but the execute bit
is not set. I've changed this to "x", "s", "-", all to no avail.

It seems apparent that when linux hanged itself, it left some remnant of
information that ttyS0: was occupied. Since this is the COM port, I'm
obliged to use it. How do I free this thing?

Failing a complete recipe for fixing it, where in the FM should I RTFM?

I'm open to suggestions, and may be desperate enough to try a few.

Thanks.

Dale.

You could use 'rpm2cpio <package name> | cpio -id' to unpack the RPM into
the current directory. I am not a cpio expert, so it may be possible to
specify exactly which file is unpacked as well.

Hope this helps,

Assuming you're using the driver as a module, trying adding
'full_duplex=1' to your /etc/conf.modules:

options eepro100 full_duplex=1

I think that'll work with this driver.

Nope, news reading works fine with Netscape Messenger. You must be doing
something wrong. When you select a newsgroup, are you actually
subscribing to it or just displaying it? What shows in the newsgroup
tree?

Subject: Windows2k share always disconnects from Samba
Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 22:30:05 GMT

Hi,

I'm using a very simple configuration of a Windows 2000 client (Build 2195)
and a Samba 2.0.5a Server.
With this configuration I experience the following problem:

I can map a normal network drive from Windows 2000 to Samba. This works
without any problem. I can copy gigabytes of data without running into
problems.
The problem rises as soon as I make this share available offline (a W2k
feature). All the data gets copied to the W2k box but then the share begins
to disconnect all the time. It tells me the following message: "You are no
longer connected to <server>. You can continue working normaly."

This happens although the network connection is up (at the same time I can
transfer files via ftp).

Does anybody else experience this problem?

Thanks a lot for any hints

Heinz

By default, Red Hat Linux uses bash. There are shells available that are more
like the Korn shell (pdksh comes to mind, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is
available with Red Hat Linux).

I think it is really hard to find an OS that is worse than Windoz 98. I haven't
try Windoz 2000 yet; therefore, I can't say anything about it. I might try it
when I have A LOT of free time.

Like you said. They want something that works right out of the box. If you ask
all Windoz users to install Windoz on their computer, I wonder how many people
will still say "hey, Windoz is easy."

You can do something about rough edged Linux products when you know more about.
I doubt this is the case with Windoz.

You really think so? I have used M$ Windoz for over six years. I have done
Windoz installation so many times. I find myself having a lot of trouble
installing Windoz 98. On the other hand, I only use Linux (Red Hat) for 2 years
(Starting with Version 5.2).

Here is my comparison
Installing Windoz: 2 hours + job. Video card is not working right (ATI All in
wonder 128), SCSI scanner (UMAX) is not working right either. Right now. Windoz
hang right after boot up (sometime). Gee, it's only been about a week after the
FRESH installation. Slow... Poor performance comparing to Linux. If you really
want to know the detail spec of my machine you can find them here. I really
don't even want to bother with M$ Windoz anymore....
http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/~chu/hardware.html

Installing Linux: 50-60 minutes job (maybe less). USABLE OS after the fresh
installation. I did a full installation. GIMP, Netscape, and a lot of goodies.
I don't think you can telnet and ftp to your Windoz 95, 98 0r 98 SE box right
after installation without adding software (they cost you extra money too). It
provides much better security too. Oh, video card and scanner work beautifully.
Unlike some slicker product.

I don't think I am that good at Linux and I keep reading NG, doc and all that.
I also heard people saying "I don't like Linux because it's nothing like
Windoz!" For god sake, it is not suppose to be like Windoz... And thanks god it
is not. I am a very lucky person because I don't need to use Windoz at all. I
use Linux and SGI at work, Solaris at school, and Linux at home.

You might ask, "Why did you install Windoz?" My answer is, " I am a CIS major
student, I think it's still a good idea to know it although it is a very bad
product. Besides, I have four HDs... I can waste one on Windoz." But, I don't
really use it at all. I did not even bother to install MS Office.

Hi!

My linux box acts strangely. Sometime - after not using it awhile and the

that I found that the network of that box is down: I cannot establish any
network connection to the machine. It will stay that way until I touch the
keyboard: it gives a beep, the screen came up, and the network came up
also.

The apmd module is shut down, so I don't think that is the cause. Anya
idea what is the cause of this?

TIA!

Yeah, I can read it and understand what does every "sign" mean, but I
want to print/view it with its original format.
I suppose it is related with groff (or nroff). But it seems to need a
special definition file, like "man" does.

think again. IINM, power management can be implemented in BIOS. anyway,
i'm 96% sure that what you're looking at is power management, because i've
experienced exactly the same things that you describe.

one alternative is to go scrounging around the BIOS, looking for a way to
disable power management.

a possibly more attractive solution is to see if your motherboard will allow
something which my motherboard calls "WakeOnLAN" (i think), which will wake
up the computer on network activity. unfortunately it only works with their
brand of network cards, so i was never able to try it out :(

Should have written down what I did. The following is 8 months old,
off the top of my head.

Here is what I did, for my firewall (fw) box and Web browsing (wb) box.

on fw
As root, created a user_account (not the same as the one in wb),
then added
<xconsole> 0666 /dev/console 0600 root.root
to /etc/security/console.perms

As user in user account on fw.
created xcon
#************* start xcon *****************
 AUTHORITY=/home/user_account_name_here/.Xauthority
export DISPLAY=wb:0
xconsole -geom 1032x50+400+00 -file /var/log/messages &
#************ end xcon **********************

then did a chmod +x xcon

created .rhosts in fw user_account, containing
wb.home bittwister
and did a chmod 400 .rhosts

Then logged off the fw box.

=============== wb commands here  =============================

As root,
created bittwister account.
Logged in as bittwister
created xfw

#-------------------- start xfw --------------------------
_node=fw

xhost +$_node
xterm -title "${_node}<--`hostname` login" -wf \
-fn 9x15 -tn vt100 -fg white -bg seagreen -geom 172x24+1+1 \
-n $_node -xrm "*iconGeometry: +150+680" +aw \
-e rlogin -l `cat /usr/local/site/default_loginid` $_node \
&

#-------------------- end xfw --------------------------

then chmod +x xfw

I am running Mandrake so I put xfw in my bittwister startup folder.

you would have to do a xfw

after the bittwister's xfw script opens an xterm window from the fw,
I do a xcon in the fw user's account xterm window.

I now have a three line window showing firewall attempts
at the top of my screen from the firewall on the wb box.

Is it the RPM you use or you compile it ??? Which version you have ??

The error could be in your configuration ...

8-10mb/s read on a 7200RPM drive is fairly normal.

You may want to run the test a couple of times *and* include the -T option.

e.g.

The following results running the test 3 times:
[root@yelm /root]# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 6.07 seconds = 2.64 MB/sec
[root@yelm /root]# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 0.63 seconds =25.40 MB/sec
[root@yelm /root]# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 0.63 seconds =25.40 MB/sec

Now with -T:

[root@yelm /root]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 32 MB in 1.29 seconds =24.81 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 5.86 seconds = 2.73 MB/sec
[root@yelm /root]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 32 MB in 1.29 seconds =24.81 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 5.86 seconds = 2.73 MB/sec
[root@yelm /root]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 32 MB in 1.28 seconds =25.00 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 5.91 seconds = 2.71 MB/sec

The actual drive speed is about 2.7Mb/s in this case but hdparm
reported 25Mb/s on the 2nd run of the 1st set of tests.
(It's an old 4Gb 5400rpm Quantum Fireball.)
