Yes, but PS should at least render in some way (eps is essentially ps with a
different bounding box</generalisation>).

I would suggest checking your ghostscript installation (lyx uses it for
rendering on screen) and maybe your latex install as well. Just had someone
I know have this same problem, it disappeared after she had a bit of a
fiddle with ghostscript (using a more general version than she was using)
and general checking of latex setup.

Basically it does work, but you need to make sure your installation has
everything LyX needs. And to reiterate other people's recommendations, the
lyx mail lists are very helpful indeed.

Subject: Weird behaviour of "route"
Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 15:15:48 -0400

        Hi, I have a Redhat 6.1 Linux distribution installed. My computer have
2 ethernet cards : eth0, eth1. Normally, my default gateway is defined
for eth0. I do an ifconfig eth0 down and "route del default". When I
do "route", it report the correct routes. If I do "route add default gw
XX.XXX.XX.XX eth1", no error are reported.

        Then, If I try to ping inside the subnet address, or outside, I get
unreachable host... If I try "route" it report the correct route except
that the default gateway never apear (it just wait for ever without
doing anything). If I do a cat /proc/net/route, I see the correct
entries : a default gateway is correctly configure for eth1. What is
that ???

I have try doing this in every order, leaving time between commands so
the system have time to get "in sync" (if it needs to). Still, it just
look like I can't use my second interface...

        Please help me !

        Thanks.

Or, go to yast, select kernel and choose the nice SMP one precompiled for you.

This gets you started, then go to compiling your kernel at your leisure.

Quickest, cheapest, simplest way:

cat /proc/cpu

If you have two cpus there should be separate entries in that file for
processor 0 and processor 1. If not, you're not running an SMP-aware kernel.

Pete,

I experienced the same problem but with Windows 2000. I did not loose too
much time on this issue and returned to good old nfs. Why would you want to
use a "3rd party" protocoll when there is nfs, which is offered with the
OS?

This is how I got around the problem.....but I assume this is not what you
where looking for :-).

Seems a bit of a carry on when make clean (or make mrproper if you really
want)should do everything you want.
(Why are you loading in a presumably clean and bare source tree *then*
running make mrproper on it, which cleans up the source tree of all
compiled/configured stuff??)

>Note: everyone who uses x should look at make menuconfig. I find it way

Exactly, loads up quicker, works better on remote machines, and particularly
with newer kernel's xconfig, much quicker navigation.

Xconfig *seems* better but when you use it it just gets in the way. Still,
nice try ;).

I've done the same thing many a time. Use the boot.img disk that you used to
install linux on your system. try at the LILO prompt:
"mount root=/dev/hd<# of root partition>"
if your partition will still not boot, then your partition tables are
overlapped.
you'll have to load an installation version of linux in your ramdrive (as if you
were reinstalling linux), run "fdisk" and print the partition table.
review the starting and stopping points of the partitions. TRY NOT TO SCREW UP
ANY FAT partitions or any other partitions that have your work files!

As far as I know, the append= portion is required. The upper
or lower case on the M is immaterial. I'll wager that moving
that exact statement to the image section will get it
working for you. append = is an image-specific modifier, and
needs to be within the image section. Try this:

boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout = 50
linear
disk=/dev/sda
  bios=0x81
default = linux
  vga = normal
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0smp
  label = linux
  initrd = /boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0smp.img
  read-only
  root = /dev/sda1
  append = "mem=512m"
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
  label = linux-up
  initrd = /boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0.img
  read-only
  root = /dev/sda1
  append = "mem=512m"

May be it's a funny question, but why is a Penguin the logo of Linux .

I know that Linus Torvalds is from Findland - a country of snow and ice, but

So why a penguin? Does anyone know the answer?

Anyway, Linux is the best OS in the world !

Well, thanks for everybody's help. This has been fixed, and apparently not
only do you have to RTFM, you also have to LATFM (Look At The 'F'
Machine). The whole time the box was booting off the floppy drive, thus
negating all my lilo changes :) I'm not a complete moron though: the box
was in a locked server room and I couldn't get to it until today...

Anyway FYI:

- The 512m vs 512M is irrelavent
- My append = "mem=512m" line is outside both of the image sections and is
  fine.
- I had to change the bios setting to be "bios=0x80" for my box.

The Disk is clean. The Disk is in a (I don't know the word: a box in which the
disk is, for easy changing the disk or to put it easyly in another computer;
sorry).

So I put the server disk in my client machine and booted the client linux and
ran e2fsck on the (not mounted!) disk and it IS clean. 100%!!!

Do I have to make something different if I change the kernel version?
I made it just by the same way I made all my other kernels.

The entry is called a facility. Have a look at the syslog.conf manpage
("The facility specifies the subsystem that produced the message...") and
/usr/include/syslog.h (or /usr/include/sys/syslog.h).

Hi,

I can't get my DLink DFE-530TX+ ethernet card to work, and I was
wondering if anyone has had success with this card in Linux. Maybe
it's a bad card.  I have a DLink DFE-530TX card that I get working
fine, but when I try to use the TX+ it's no go. I'm using RH 6.2 and
it contains the module rtl8138.o which is the driver that is supplied
with the card. It keeps giving me failures for eth0 on bootup.

Could it be a bios problem? I have an old Dell XPS 133MHz (AMI BIOS).

Any info that you can give me on these two cards and their differences
would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Similar problems occur with Win98 too. The various partitioning programs
such as disk druid and partition magic seem to operate slightly
differently, and can produce partition mappings that are incompatible
with each other. After stumbling over these kinds of errors, I came to
the conclusion that the easy way of handling partitioning is to choose
one program (I chose PM) and do all partitioning with it. Then changes
later on are a much less troublesome.
