Still don't know why booting from diskette is so much slower but I have
added Linux to Boot Manager so the issue is now moot.

I have no problem getting them just don't know how to specify the
destination pts.

Using ps -fu $USER reveals that I've lots of pts used, but who only
gives me one tty. Can I direct the messages to a pts device instead
of tty? (Solaris allows me to do that)
$ ps -fu $USER | grep bash

That's the tty that I start my xwindows with. I can't use it for

ssh probably does NOT like less restrictive access. noone else should be

The "--directory=DIR" argument applies to all following files until the
next such directory-changing argument, so you don't need to keep
repeating it with each file (though it is easier to script). But as
long as you are not generating excessively long command lines, you may
not want to change a working script.

don't even think about trying to match all those dependencies. THey are
probably dependencies that programs on your current system need. DO
what I did and get the sources, compile them -- make sure you change all
the configure scripts to have -O3 instead of -O2. THis makes the result
much faster, which I learned from experience.

I'd like to simply "rerun" the portion of RH7.0s installation that goes

They same could be said for almost every pantheistic religion out there.

Hello, I am having a problem with apache that I am quite certain anyone

problems whatsoever so I started setting up the system for Userdirs. I

external source. My perms on the home directories and the files in the

Suppose you have an entry
emacs.geometry: 3x4+10+20
in your ~/.Xdefaults file. Then "emacs" will use it, but "emacs-20.7"
will not.
I use "Emacs.geometry" rather than "emacs.geometry", then all instance
of Emacs use the entry, rather than just the ones called with the
"emacs" command.
Do "xrdb -query" for a list of all resources in the X server, do
"appres Emacs" and "appres emacs" for further lists of resources.
Does this help?

This question comes up every few days.
There is even a 6-section FAQ that is posted every week to this
newsgroup (I cannot find it on my server because some spammer-cracker
busted it and my ISP has had to reload everything and apparently has not
gotten to the FAQs yet). I did a search of this newsgroup for distr and

Here's better advice: don't bother with /etc/services, just leave it
the way it is. Didn't you see the bit in the Security-HOWTO that said
"It's usually not worth the trouble to remove services, since it provides no
additional security"?
If you do 'man services', you'll see that the man page says that
/etc/services is used to convert from service names to port numbers.
THAT'S IT. NOTHING ELSE. It's there purely so you can say "telnet
foo.bar.com qotd" instead of "telnet foo.bar.com 17". If you ask me, that line
should be removed from the HOWTO since it's got absolutely nothing to do
with security.

Look at /etc/inittab. You need to specify a different default
runlevel - specifically, the one that starts up X and a display manager.
This is 4 on Slackware; don't know if it's the same across all
distributions...

A useful hint (as it is something of a pain when the system won't
boot properly because something is wrong and then won't let you change
anything to fix it...): mount -o remount,rw /
Remounts the filesystem read-write, invisibly to any processes already
running. Very handy.

Subject: qt programs compiling
Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 20:06:18 GMT
I found some sample source files in the trolltech website, so I tried to
compile them under linux with, but as I try to do it, the compiler tells me
that it can't find header files such as qapplication.h ... even if qt and
qt-devel packages are correctly installed.
Thanks a lot in advance
