Turbo cluster from turbolinux
is a linux distribution that handles clustering though it costs.

I have RAID 0 and after upgrading to kernel 2.2.16 it will no more
recognize the the raid drives it fail with VFS eerrors. I tried to
recreate the raid 0 array, but when i did mke2fs it hung on
creating the inodes. After reverting back to kernel 2.2.15 all was
ok. Anyoneexperience the same problems and is there a fix/patch
available?

The current version of cdrecord has a switch for packet writing
(labelled "experimental"). Anyone knows how to use that? I know this is
not the UDF file system. The trouble with multi-session writes is that
there is a great deal of overhead: you can only add some 40-odd sessions
before filling up the CD. That is not a lot of files.

I'm running netscape 4.72 on RH 6.2 Intel. Kinda works. What is
killing me is trying to view teTeX documentation. I browse the
toplevel index.html file just fine. When I click on a link to a
dvi file I get an error. I have the application preference set
to:
/usr/bin/xdvi %s
for the entry "TeX DVI data". The error that pops up is:
xdvi.bin: Could not create temporary directory. Exiting.
I'm not sure where it is attempting to create a temp directory.
Certainly it can work in /tmp. The documents are located in
/usr/share/texmf/doc. I've tried to set the permissions there
so a directory can be created. Is it trying in my $HOME area?
All advice appreciated.

Care to share your /usr/X11R6/lib/app-defaults/Netscape or .Xresources
file? I've been fooling with this all night and about the only thing I've
been able to do is change the fonts of the menu, url bar, and personal
toolbar to be something more bearable. I still have _tiny_ fonts when
displaying cnn.com, for instance (yes, I did make the 100dpi changes in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/Netscape as well as in the font server).
Much thanks,

Poke around at Freshmeat: http://freshmeat.net/, an online index of
(mostly) Linux apps. In the AppIndex under Console/Web Browser and
Web/Applications, you'll find a number of text-based and graphical
browsers.
I tend to use (preference ranking, scale 1-10, 5 is a usable product):
o 7.0 Netscape 4.72: bloated, buggy, crashes, but supports most
current site features, has decent UI, and supports fonts. I find it
absolutely essential to disable Java and Javascript. I also browse
through a Junkbuster proxy (applies to all following browsers) and
Vasile's Gif Animation Toggle, which stops animated gifs from
cycling (search for it on Google).
o 6.5 w3m: text-mode browser -- supports frames, tables, and other
advanced features. No Java, Javascript, or SSL support (AFAIK), the
last is the only one I miss significantly. Can render large complex
displays slowly due to rendering requirements. links is a similarly
featured browser.
o 6.0 lynx: text-mode browser -- similar to w3m but lacking
frame / table support. Can render complex pages more rapidly --
mostly by ingnoring most of the layout.
o 5.5 Mozilla: stability is rapidly improving, performance is a
bit slow (I've been meaning to build it w/o debug support, should
be faster), and a number of UI features are still somewhat annoying:
mouse button mappings, URL drag'n'drop, inability to configure
TT font support, ability to kill gif animations. I think it's going
to be good, but not there quite yet.
o 5.5 kfm: The KDE File Manager is actually a pretty decent web browser.
Somewhat feature-poor, but lightweight. Manages some pages that
confuse Netscape. Since you're already running KDE, you might give
it a shot. It has some nice privacy/security features for managing
Gifs and Cookies.
o 5.5 Netscape versions 3.02 - 4.05: Old gold. While lacking some modern
browser features, the earlier versions of the Netscape browser were
lighter, faster, and more stable than most of the more recent 4.x
series. Plus they give that nostalgic edge. You can download them
from the Netscape site somewhere, poke around.
o 5.0 StarOffice 5.1: StarOffice is a bloated stuck pig. However it's a
reasonably good office suite (I hate office suites), despite an
incredibly annoying all-in-one design. The web browser is pretty
good.
o 2.0 telnet port 80. 'nuf said. Useful for finding out what's wrong
with an absolutely broken site.
o 1.0 Opera pre-alpha, can't say I like it. Very unstable. I'm also
unfamiliar with the Opera interface, and find it non-intuitive.

You have opened what? It may refer to both apps.
How are you calling setup?
One way to try is to got to the directory where you installed and
issue:
./setup
That would help I think.
For VMWare the setup file is called something else. I believe there is
a readme file in the archive? Check it out.

I use GNU tar, but if you want true mirroring instead of a backup you could
try out some kind of RAID mirroring scheme. However, tar with the
``--listed-incremental'' option is a good choice for simple backup schemes.
See ``info tar''; it's long, but informative.

Oh yes! I get them on my Bernoulli Box drives all of the time!
Plop a zip disk into the drive before booting. then you won't see the
errors. You can still put a disk in after the error message. The
reason you see this is simple. The media has the track/sector and
partition info on each disk or in my case cartridges. Unless you have
your Zip drive as part of your fstab at bootup. you should not have
any system problems. This error should be renamed
"Read Capacity failed, do you have a disk in the drive?"

Anybody have any ideas?

Don't use the one from blackdown.org. Get it from sun instead. It's
blackdown's anyway.
I not sure how blackdown's version got fouled up, but it did and they
haven't fixed it for some months now.
http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/
1.3 for linux is still in beta. (for windoze it's a 30 meg download. Yow!
Stable, though.)
Also, there is a problem with 1.2 for linux, that it gives a bunch of errors
about not being able to find the symbol font whenever it starts up anything
graphical. It's basically harmless, and can be fixed by copying a symbol
font (which for some reason never gets used) into the fonts directory and
modifying fonts.dir. Maybe just modifying fonts.dir would be sufficient.
One of these days I'm going to figure out how to get it to use my windows
true-type fonts, since I think they're prettier.

That's exactly what my friend did to fix it.
There are different versions because people use different capabilities that
ghostscript has. Some people use it as a postscript viewer/interpreter on X,
some people only use it for printing/conversion on command line, so they use
whichever one is suited to them and cut down the size of the package. Others
who use it for everything can install the fullblown package (and sacrifice a
bit of disc space and memory).
GS_X11 will be for use on an X display, GS for use on vga terminals, GS_BOTH
(surprise ;) can be used on both.
It's like linux itself, why install a load of guff that you don't want to
use and wastes space?

Odd, it *should* do according to the Makefile:
mrproper: clean archmrproper
rm -f include/linux/autoconf.h include/linux/version.h
rm -f
drivers/net/hamradio/soundmodem/sm_tbl_{afsk1200,afsk2666,fsk9600}

rm -f drivers/sound/*_boot.h drivers/sound/.*.boot
rm -f drivers/sound/msndinit.c
rm -f drivers/sound/msndperm.c
rm -f drivers/sound/pndsperm.c
rm -f drivers/sound/pndspini.c
rm -f .version .config* config.in config.old
...
See that line there? Unless I'm grasping the stick wrongly here that should
delete any .config files in your linux source.
This is 2.2.16, maybe it's different in earlier ones.

I agree with just about all you've posted here. I would say however,
that the version of Opera which I got on a CD in mag is VERY FAST. It's
simply amazing the speed at which pages render, and even how much time
it takes to start the program.
Unfortunately, some page content on certain sites causes the browser to
die. But then it can work for a couple of hours of browsing without
dying. Many of the menu items are non functional, and I don't use it
for general browsing, mainly because some of the menu items I can't
access is the disabling cookies, and others.
When this browser is ready, it'll be the one for me. I've used and
bought several versions of Netscape over the years, but the speed at
which Opera renders is just too appealing. I will need to learn a new
interface, as some of the seemingly intuitive keystrokes don't work the
same or at all. I'll patiently wait until they offer full keyboard
navigation, etc, before I plunk my silver down.

malloc( ) doesn't observe the break like the good old days. Not that the
"sbrk( 0)" artifice was ever a good idea.
To elaborate on your program:
#include <unistd.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>
static void
showmap( )
{
char s[90];
sprintf( s, "cat /proc/%d/maps", getpid( ));
system( s);
}
main( )
{
showmap( );
printf( "0x%08X\n", sbrk( 0));
printf( "0x%08X\n", malloc( 100));
printf( "0x%08X\n", malloc( 5*1024*1024));
showmap( );
return (0);
}

The small request was satisfied from the heap. A new memory segment
was created for the large request, which can allow VM to be reclaimed.
You can see the memory segment creation with
strace a 2>&1 | grep mmap | tail -1
As a side note, it's remarkably difficult to malloc all of user VM with
a general program. Furthermore, the allocation dichotomy changes when
going between a 1+3GB and a 2+2GB kernel.

A weird thing happened over the weekend. The wu-ftp daemon on my RH6.2 just
could not seem to authorise users anymore although it was working just fine the day
before. I had no idea what happened so I just removed and re-installed the RPM.
Then it worked. Anyone know what the heck is going on?
Thanks in advance.

' What they DO scan for, however, is NEWS SERVERS. Every since that big UDP

So you have ipchains REJECT a connection to port 119 from outside your
LAN. No big deal. REJECT all incoming connections on the ports <1024
and also ports 2049 and 6000. Better yet, use DENY. Then it's as if
you don't even exist.

Hi guys,
I dusted off my 386 20 mhz which had been minus a screen for 5 years.
I just want to use it for word processing. Is there a freeware word
processing package available. My machine has Linux 1.2.1 and MSDOS 6.22.
(Did I hear someone laugh - I am from Africa!!)
(I don't have a CDRom either)
Thanks - Bernard
