When 2.4 is available I want to upgrade to take advantage of USB
support. However, I am unsure about the the *consequences* of installing
a new kernel.

Obviously, the OS has been built upon a particular kernel API.
Therefore, a new kernel can break the installed system by changing the
API.

So the question is, how do I quantify the impact of a new kernel and
identify the affected sources?

Hi,

I know that this has been asked before, without answer, but I will try
again.

Does anyone know how to check if a DDS2 (or any DDS) drive is set for
Hardware compression? And to turn it on or off?

I have tried 'mt -f /dev/st1 compression' (st1 is correct) and get
input/output error. the datcompression command is not implemented in the
version of mt I have.

The Content-Type in the script is correct.
My ISP allows you to run CGI scripts locally
inside the public_html directory.

The error message tells me nothing in the browser,
the error message in the error_log is:

"premature end of script" . I originally put the cgi scripts in
the designated cgi bin but they didn't work, giving the same error.

The book indicates you can create a .htaccess file in the local directory
to override and allow local cgi's. It also said that you could do so in
the httpd.conf file.

I read about 50 different messages this year of people having the same
problem, I tried every suggestion given and still no luck. I also have not
seen any indication that anyone ever solved the problem.

This is a pretty basic function, someone must know how to fix it!

Hi,

I've just been through the installation process for Red Hat 6.2, but
when I rebooted it got as far as 'Verifying DMI Pool Data' then gives me
screenfulls of scrolling '01's forever.
Anyone seen this before? Did I install LILO in the wrong place or
something?

thanks,

I have Red Hat 6.2 installed in my 12MB RAM, 486 66Mhz. I am trying to
configure a PPP dial in to my server through an external Hayes 33.6 modem
on com 2 with uugetty. I have checked my modem and it will dial out in dos
if i run
echo at dt 123456 >com2
When i reboot or type init q, I keep on getting an error saying:

Id S1 respawining too fast. Disabled for 5 minutes

This repeats every 5 min and the modem dial in does not work.
Can someone tell me what i should do to get rid of this error
I made the following modifications to my files in /etc/ppp

options:
lock
netmask 255.255.255.0
proxyarp
ms-dns 192.168.111.10

ttyS1:
192.168.111.10:192.168.111.55

pap.secrets:
* jughead.my domain name"" *

in /etc , i added the following line to inittab:
S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/uugetty -D /etc/conf.uugety.ttyS1 ttyS1 f38400

and made a file in /etc named conf.uugetty.ttyS1 with the following
contents:

# sample uugetty configuration file for a Hayes compatible modem to allow
# incoming modem connections
#
# alternate lock file to check... if this lock file exists, then uugetty is
# restarted so that the modem is re-initialized
ALTLOCK=cua3
ALTLINE=cua3
# line to initialize
INITLINE=cua3
# timeout to disconnect if idle...
TIMEOUT=60
# modem initialization string...
# format: <expect> <send> ... (chat sequence)
INIT="" AT\r OK\r\n
WAITFOR=RING
CONNECT="" ATA\r CONNECT\s\A
# this line sets the time to delay before sending the login banner
DELAY=1
#DEBUG=010

Thanks

M-q wraps the current paragraph.

1: Have you tried simply copying a plain text file to /dev/lp0?
2: What are you using? LPRng?
3: Have you done a checkpc? Have you done a checkpc -f?
4: After doing that, have you closed down lpd and restarted it?
5: Have you checked your /etc/printcap file?
6: Go to the /var/spool/lpd/lp (is that right?) and look at the files
   there (they should pretty much all be text files you can examine).
7: What type of file are you printing? Plain text or PostScript?
8: Does the printer support postscript?
9: I had a problem with my printer, in that it kept giving me an error
   about not getting a status response. Turn it off. For example, I have
   an HP600 and have the following line in my printcap.
   :ifhp=model=djet500,status@
   where the "status@" line turns off the status request.
A: If you are printing postscript, and the printer does not support it,
   have you set up GhostScript as a filter? Have you made it an
   executable script?
B: etc.

I have a HP 1534 (?) tapedrive which has a jumper for compression. This acts
as default. With this jumper I can choose to compress by default or not.
Standard tape backup will use this setting without further software control.

1: Do you have a directory /floppy/?
   (I have one at /mnt/floppy/)
2: What format is the floppy? What is the default in /etc/fstab?
   If you want to mount a floppy of a different type, you need
   the -t (type) switch.
3: Unless you are in the base directory (/), you should use
   ls /floppy

For Linux floppies I can use:
mount /dev/fd0

(my /etc/fstab file will automatically put those in /mnt/floppy)

But for DOSish disks, I have support for DOS, MSDOS and VFAT compiled in
(without that there is no support for DOSish disks) and use:

mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

There is a manual page on mount (use "man mount").
