I worked out how to do it today, so any future replies to this thread

0. Install new kernel, keeping old kernel around just in case. See
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html for the scoop on how to do
this.
1. Reboot and see if anything breaks
FWIW, when I went from 2.2.14 to 2.4.0-test1, nothing major broke. I had
to add one line in /etc/fstab so that shared memory would be available--
that's it.
The userland API is supposed to remain very consistent from one kernel
version to the next--what use would it be otherwise? Kernel internals are
a different story.

Subject: wget timeout parameter
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 15:05:17 GMT
I am having trouble with the wget timeout parameter. I'm not sure if
it's something wierd with the URL I am using to test with - or if this
parameter just plain don't work in wget. I've tried this...
wget -T 5 http:/ /24.12.130.194/HTMZ-24/billy1.htm
and this...
wget --timeout=5 http:// 24.12.130.194/HTMZ-24/billy1.htm
But no matter what number I enter in for a timeout - it always hangs
for about 15 minutes trying to connect to this site. The info page
says the default is 900 seconds. I can set the number of retries with
the -t parameter and that works - but even 1 retry with a 15 minute
timeout is too long for this app.
I am using wget as a way to validate web links and I can't have my
application hanging up for 15 minutes everytime it hits a bad link.
BTW - the link I am using for testing (shown above) is a known bad
link. It is an example if the kind of thing I am trying to weed out of
my application.
Any thoughts on this?

Subject: lilo on Floppy to Boot Kernel on Fixed disk
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Martin McCormick)
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 15:29:59 GMT
I want to install lilo on a bootable floppy so that the system boots
linux if a floppy is in drive A or DOS if not.
The documentation indicates that lilo simply resides in the
same place where the DOS boot sector is found.
What I either missed or didn't look in the right place to find
is what do I do in Linux to end up with a floppy disk that has lilo in
the boot sector?
The rest should involve pointing out the linux partition on
the hard drive where the kernel and the other file systems are. In
other words, the floppy just makes linux boot from the hard drive.
Somehow, I think I am missing something glaringly obvious in
the RTFM department, so my apologies in advance. I thought fdisk
was the thing to use, but it is for fixed disks.

# fdformat /dev/fd0h1440
# dd if=/boot/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0 bs=18k
This will make a bare-bones bootable floppy, using your original kernel
image. You can make a better boot floppy with LILO on it if you need to
pass kernel parameters at boot time; documentation should have come with
your boxed set if you have a boxed set. Or try
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO.html for more than you ever
wanted to know.
BTW, this is a *bad idea* for generalized booting purposes. Floppies die
and get corrupted much faster than hard disks, and booting from a floppy
is much slower than booting from a hard disk. Set your Linux partition
active and install LILO in the bootsector of that partition if you're
afraid to mess with the MBR!

Hi there,
A simple issue that's driving me kind of nuts here so I need to ask it. I
have a network with 2 windows machines sharing an ADSL connection through a
linux box running Mandrake 6.1. I use IRC on the windows machine and the
linux machine but regardless if I'm using the windows machine or the linux
system it tells me that my ident server is not responding. I'll be honest
I'm quite new at linux and I'm not too familliar with ident. I looked
through the man for it and it wasn't too helpfull and I've gone through all
kinds of documentation and it dosen't seem to help. I've edited the
inetd.conf file to have the proper ident line in there but I still can't get
a response from port 113.
Could someone please give me a link to a site that explains ident in great
detail so I could get this working or possibly email me to let me know how
to correct this please?
Just a little further detail, when I try to connect to port 113 on my
machine I get the following:
0,0 ERROR : UNKOWN ERROR
Thanks,
Curtis P.

Hm, if you don't want to compile ssh, there are rpm's at
http://www.zedz.net (former replay associates):
ftp://ftp.zedz.net/pub/crypto/redhat/i386/
or the mirror:
ftp://ftp.nl.monster.org/pub/ftp.zedz.net/redhat/i386/
they(ssh-1.2.27-7i.i386.rpm) worked for me with RH6.2.

That is because ac_dns was in the current directory. *.txt
got expanded to include all the .txt files in the current directory
and then a search was down in all subdirectories for those same files.
If ac_dns.txt didn't exist in . then it wouldn't have been found in the
docs directory.

Guy's 'n' Doll's,
Have any of you ever had this experience?
/the story:/
I'm a systems specialist for a rather large firm in europe and in my
firm, linux is the stuff of the ungodly.
It runs, but it runs hidden. I'll bet there may be two boxes (one of
em's mine) stashed away out of thousands. (big house)
I've been talking about linux for the past year and a half or so and
slowly my suroundings are starting to adapt to my... otherness. We run
all kinds of stuff but no .. yup and i used to be the strange guy who
talked about lin..what did you call it again?
Now, the ppl around me are starting to become aware that linux and i
weren't full of it, and i'm actually starting to get questions and stuff
from (mostly the younger) collegae around me who seem to see me as a
sort of rebel-geek. i've actually been talking to managers (aka. MIS, or
men in suits) about my addiction to something that they could never
_officially_ admit they were curious (or even (dare i say it?)
enthusiastic about). Even so, i get carefully guarded responses to "go
for it and see where it takes you".
What's that "it"? Well the implementation of linux in the production
environment of my work. (ahhh! heaven)
/end of story/
Today something happend that prompted me to write this, so here's the
lowdown: my house uses a disgusting application to make a certain type
of server availible as a cdrom-server (after hanging a cdrom tower on
some scsi or other). This application is unstable and the servers were
never ment to serve cdrom towers in a high load environment. Anyway
after server x went down for the gazillionth time a 10 watt bulb lit up
in a dark corner of my mind.
Never having done a (more or less) "radical" thing in the production
network before, i tested _my_ linux server (redhat 6.2 dual ppro, 160mb,
24gb raid on a megaraid controler and now a cdrom tower w/7 devices) by
attaching said tower. Well the tower was recognized and i mounted and it
worked. It worked.
I told my boss.
He said: "good work, mindglow, you did good. really. now go and fix the
other server."
I said: "but it'll go down again tomorrow. it's not ment to be a cdrom
server and the cdtower app. totally bites wind."
He said: "if it downs then too bad, but you're not putting that untried,
untested linux configuration who no one else can administer but yourself
into production."
And you know what? Even though i hated it when it happened, he's right.

In what way? Perhaps the important step is getting Linux to recognize
the drive at all. I believe the trick with smaller drives was to set the
BIOS to treat the drive as an 8G model -- Linux doesn't care but LILO
has to be able to boot somehow.

Without X, and with such a weak CPU, your choices are definitely
limited. AFAIK, there are no full text-mode-only word processing
packages for Linux. You might want to look into using LaTeX. You can
then write your documents using any ASCII text editor and create final
output by processing them through LaTeX. Alternatively, you might see
about running a DOS word processor (such as WordPerfect 4.x or 5.x)
under DOSEMU, or directly in DOS.

Example for SuSE Linux (Maybe it's the same on other distributions?)
Edit your /ect/rc.config!
Search for the line or add it: ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE
For no remote root logins: ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="no"
But I would use ssh for remote root logins!
