Subject: fwrite / fread impossibility
Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2001 15:26:21 +0200
Hi
Anybody ever run into the following:
I am writing a structs to a file - they are written after about a 1000 other
structs and some ints and longs - (binary file). However, and I have checked
this several times, after the 290th struct (sometimes varies with +5 or -5)
data does get written to the file, but on loading it back with a target
reader program, fread() just returns 0 values - it does not appear to read
anything at all.
I have checked it several times with gdb - the struct gets written, but on
reading it in from the same file position, fread returns 0 as if I am
reading past the end of the file.
Anybody else encounter this fread/fwrite behaviour before? How can I fix it?
I cannot pinpoint (obviously) if fwrite is the culprit or fread - one of
them does not seem to work. The code compiles fine, no warnings, no errors.
I am using gcc under RH6.2.
Thanks!
Stefan

The disk is reporting some sort of uncorrectable error, and the kernel
is mounting the partition read-only so that you don't try writing to
this br0ken disk and screwing things up further. Back up the data on
this disk, *NOW*, and seriously consider getting a new disk. If it's
always reporting just that one sector as bad, you can get by for a while
by wiping the filesystem and using "mke2fs -c" to check for bad sectors
while creating a new filesystem. If it's reporting multiple sectors as
bad and reporting different ones every time, your disk is going south at
a high rate of speed. HTH,

I'm sure Turbo has a flashy pointy-clicky thing for doing these
operations. I have never even seen a Turbo install, so I'm just going
to give you the generic way of doing things that should work on every
distro.
>1. How do I set the system clock?
Would that be the hardware clock or the system clock? They're two
different things. The command-line way is "date -s $DATESTRING" where
DATESTRING is usually something like "Wed Jun 13 09:19:38 EDT 2001".
Adjust that string for your timezone. To set the hardware clock, first
set the system clock, then set the hardware clock with "hwclock
--systohc".
>2. How do I set up MySql as a service (port 111)?
Read the MySQL documentation. You have to have MySQL installed first,
of course.
>3. How do I set up IMAP4 as a service (port 143)?
Install an IMAP server, like imapd, then edit /etc/inetd.conf (if it
exists... some distros use xinetd, which has a completely different
config file layout) and remove the comment in front of the "imap" line.
Then exit and "killall -HUP inetd".
>4. How do I set up Apache as a service (any port but requests go to port 80)
Install Apache, edit Apache's configuration file, start Apache. Usually
Apache is started at boot time from /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache if it's
installed, but you start it from the command line by doing "apachectl
start".
>5. Where are the Apache configuration files?
> (Does Apache come with mod_perl and mod_auth compiled in?)
This is distro-dependent, so you'll have to find out for yourself.
>6. Is there a default group, such as staff, that
> new users should belong to?
? If Turbo uses "user-private-never-to-be-sufficiently-damned-groups"
then each user has a personal group, named the same as their username,
which only they belong to. If Turbo lacks this misfeature, then all
users will belong to group "users" when created.
>7. Are users who can su a member of wheel?
There is no real use for the wheel group in Linux. su is by default
available to everyone. There is an interesting rant/explanation by RMS
in the Solaris man page for "su", but it's vanished from the Linux man
page. GO figure.
>8. Why can't I telnet to localhost?
'Cause your telnet service is turned off. telnet is evil, use ssh
instead.

useradd -m $USERNAME ? man useradd.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying. That is how my previous linux
box was set up. But it won't work now, using RH 7.1 and Gnome/sawfish.
I tried running config util for sawfish and binding different keys, but
that didn't do anything either.
The key binding I am trying to set are : next workspace, previous
workspace. Is that correct? By workspace, I assume they mean
"desktop"?

We are considering using CD-RW for backups, instead of tape drives. I
know it's possible, but does it really really work -- reliably?
Does anyone have actual experience of performing backups to CD-RW on a
regular basis over a long term?
Thanks for any & all feedback.

first, open source is not static, and developers generally use the latest
libraries. These can change daily. They also tend to use libraries not
included in staandard distros. Look at the rpm docs, and study the 'update'
option well. The new install may well conflict with an older library, which
is required by your present software.
Welcome to Linux. With no large corporation periodically releasing OS
versions, it is up to the luser to build or hunt down dependant packages if

Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2001 14:06:49 GMT
When I finish building a kernel (making bzimage, modules, modules_install,
etc) I am told by one person that I should always do a "depmod -a <new
kernel version>".
For example:
depmod -a 2.2.14
However, several other Linux-type gurus tell me that this step is not
required.
It creates the /lib/modules/2.2.14/modules.dep file. What is this file used
for and is it really necessary to create this file when rebuilding a kernel?

In over 35 years experience, I have found that it NEVER paid to turn
off the -g flag (or the equivalent with other languages and
compilers), or to strip symbol tables from programs. I do not know how
Linux handles the symbol tables, but in older times, the symbol tables
were not loaded into memory anyway unless they were needed for
debugging. Even were they loaded, they would probably get paged out
unless you were debugging, so they would not be wasting memory. (I
recognize that -g does more than include or exclude the symbol table,
but the rest is very small.)
I think the reason to purge them is if you are a paranoid provider of
proprietary closed source code, and you wish to make it more difficult
to reverse-engineer it. If you are so short of memory or disk space as
to be considering stripping symbol tables and stuff, your time might
be better spent finding a way to get more memory or disk space. Back
when there was only 65536 bytes of address space no matter how much
money you had, this was a more important consideration than it is now.

At the risk of insulting your intelligence, have you rewound the file
before you try reading it? Or did you open two different file
descriptors, one for reading and one for writing?

I would not know since I have never tried using CD-RW for backups. But
for my backup paradigm, I would need an awful lot of CD-RWs since I
write a little over 4GBytes to tape every morning (while I am asleep),
and I guess I would need a CD-RW drive with an autochanger in it to
keep stuffing new blanks in and removing the written ones.
Also, my 4Gbytes is not all that large. Many need much more backup
capacity. I have only 2 9.1 GByte hard drives and much of it is
ephemeral. I was talking with a friend who runs a photolab and does
extensive digital image processing. He has multiple 60 GByte drives on
SCSI controllers on just one of his machines. He could not possibly do
backups onto CD-RW; he would need to hire a full-time employee to do
backups all day.
>

Again, not me. But I have a lot of experience performing backups to
magnetic tape, and that is no joy either. I have experience with 75
i.p.s. 200 bpi 7-track reel-to-reel tapes, 800 bpi 112.5 i.p.s.
9-track reel-to-reel tapes, QIC tapes, DDS-2 tapes, and now VXA-1
tapes. None are as reliable as I would like.

Hello !
Have you considered the buy of a second hand HP laserjet 4 or 5 ?
If you buy the 4 go for the 4Mplus which is postscript enabled and
perhaps you could buy it with the MIO ethernet Jetdirect card and some
extra memory for it (really usefull for graphic printing)
Check the total printed pages (but this can be changed if the guy wo
sold it is somewhat undelicate) mine has passed the 890 000 barrier...
Hope this helps
