I had the same problem with the same printer.

There are differents versions of "apsfilter". The one that cames with SuSE 5.x
did not work. I used a version that was distributed with a spanish magazine. I
remember there was a ps file (a tiger) to make a test with the printer.
But I'm afraid I'll take at least 1 month to visit home, where I have the CD.
Take a look at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and ask for the
apsfilter in numbers 6 or 7 if you want to look for the original package.

Other way you can test is using the files I've got installed. Now I have a
HP610C, and I remember It worked without reinstalling the filters. I don't know
if finally I did it or not. Anyway, I'll send it to you.

Bye.

Hi folks

I have a working parallel-port Zip drive running under Linux, but it seems to
be a lot slower than it is under a Windows system of a friend of mine.
Iomega has a Windows tool called "Parallel-Port Accelerator" or something
like that, and it configures the parallel port to allow maximum transfer rates
(well, at least it claims to...). How can I do that under Linux?

Thanks for any help,
Severin

ISO9660. All removable devices are usually unmounted as standard.
You can set the to automount using autofs and automount.

Or rather, you *should* be able to...
I've managed to get automount to work with the floppy, but for some reason
can't get the CDROM to automount.

Subject: Linux crashing on boot
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 19:09:43 GMT

Hi guys...

I am facing an annoying problem with one of my Linux boxes, which is
based on an AMD K6 CPU. I run RedHat 6.1 which is fine, but I need a
newer kernel, so I downloaded 2.3.99-pre9 and installed it using the
same procedure I have followed succesfully for several other similar
occasions (including 2.3.99-pre9 installations in other machines).

After installing the new kernel, I am rebooting the system and it stalls
exactly after the "Ok, uncompressing the kernel" message - the system
just freezes there. I tried 2.4.0-test3 and got the same result.

Because it doens't even start the booting process, /var/log/messages is
not written, so I don't have a clue as to what the cause of the problem
might be.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dimitris

hey
there's is a patch available to get netscape to work..i dont have it
with me but it can be found pretty easily (i found it by perusing linux
newsgroups). it works pretty much only for the main scroll bar in ns and
not sub-bars etc. if i remember correctly, the patch is just a portion
of text to be entered into the imwheelrc file to control the ns scroll
bar.

hope this helps

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Sound card config problem
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 19:18:38 GMT

I'm having a problem getting my sound card (Creative Labs Sound Blaster
16C PnP) to work on my system (Debian Linux. Kernel 2.2.14. Dell
Dimension XPS T550). this machine is a dual boot NT/Linux. Sound works
perfectly in NT. The soundcard properties that the Audio device in NT
was set up with indicate that the following ports should be OK for use
with soundcard: IO=0x330, 0x388; DMA=anything but 03; IRQ=anything but
10. Using this information i have been trying to get sound up in Linux.
After doing a pnpdump into /etc/isapnp.conf, I uncommented what seemed
to be the appropriate lines for this sound card.
My /etc/isapnp.conf basically now reads:

################################
# (DEBUG)
(READPORT 0x0273)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING

# Card 1: (serial identifier e5 ff ff ff ff 70 00 8c 0e)
# Vendor Id CTL0070, No Serial Number (-1), checksum 0xE5.
# Version 1.0, Vendor version 1.0
# ANSI string -->Creative ViBRA16C PnP<--

(CONFIGURE CTL0070/-1 (LD 0

# Start dependent functions: priority preferred
# IRQ 5.
# High true, edge sensitive interrupt (by default)
 (INT 0 (IRQ 5 (MODE +E)))
# First DMA channel 1.
 (DMA 0 (CHANNEL 1))
# Next DMA channel 5.
 (DMA 1 (CHANNEL 5))
# Logical device decodes 16 bit IO address lines
 (IO 2 (SIZE 4) (BASE 0x0388))

# End dependent functions
 (NAME "CTL0070/-1[0]{Audio }")
 (ACT Y)
))
################################

I issue 'isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf' and I get the following out:

  Board 1 has Identity e5 ff ff ff ff 70 00 8c 0e: CTL0070 Serial No -1
[checksum e5]
  CTL0070/-1[0]{Audio }: Port 0x388; IRQ5 DMA1 DMA5
---Enabled OK

No errors, this is good. But then I issue 'modprobe sb io=0x0388 irq=5
dma=1 dma16=5' (sb being the driver that I think is most appropriate for
my card) and I get:

/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
  /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o
failed
  /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o: insmod sb failed

I've tried many many different values for IRQ and DMA following the
"Hint" advice - but i still get the same damn error mesgs! When I do an
lsmod I get:

  Module Size Used by
  soundcore 2372 0 (autoclean)
  lockd 30632 1 (autoclean)
  sunrpc 51588 1 (autoclean) [lockd]
  ntfs 33640 0 (unused)
  msdos 5276 0 (unused)
  fat 28800 0 [msdos]
  3c59x 18336 1

No other sound drivers are running as far as i can tell (soundcore
should not cause a conflict, right?)

What could be the problem?! Any ideas?!?!

Going Insane,
GG

My point is, that you told me to uncomment:

1280x1024 @ 74 Hz, 78.85 kHz hsync #This is the one you want!

Doesn't this line tell my monitor to use 74Hz refresh rate? My monitor

line I want.

Isn't this the line I want?

When I try it manually insmod 3c509 after boot, it fails the first time

Add an entry like so to your /etc/printcap (taken straight from the
printing-HOWTO):

z51|Lexmark Z51:\
      :lp=/dev/null:sh:\
      :sd=/var/spool/lpd/z51:\
      :rm=IP.ADDR.OF.PS110:rp=XXX:

The rp= bit must be set to the queue name the Z51 has, if the PS110 serves
more than one printer. You could try leaving it blank. Also check
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO.html for a lot more info. I
can't remember off the top of my head whether the Z51 can take PostScript
or not; you may have to fiddle with print filters. HTH,

hello!

run linuxconf as a root, there's a separate wu-ftp section, where you
can set things you need.

I can't help noticing the similiarity in the name with 'Red Hat' Linux.
Is 'Red Flag' Linux based on the 'Red Hat' distribution or is that just
a coincidence?

Subject: locking files
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 20:44:41 GMT

Hello, I was wondering how linux locks files.

I was using vi to edit a file and I mistakenly opened the same file on
top of itself. I got the message that the file was locked, realized my
mistake and exited vi. When I tried to vi the file again, I got the
message that the file was locked. I ended up recreating the file and
killing the vi job but this set me wondering how this works.

Where does linux keep track of the files it locked? Is there a way to
lock / unlock file manually?

Thanks!

I used EmTex some time ago on a similar system. This has a dvi driver
which provides direct VGA access for viewing. It also has drivers for
a variety of printers. This driver does not handle postscript however.
Postscript output would be possible using ghostscript, but viewing the
entire document with postscript images might be a problem.
The way I see it, emtex would be a good solution using Dos in a none
graphics mode. I have not used any none-graphics dvi viewers in
Linux. assuming that one is available I would lean towards using
Linux because it is a better OS, and you can easily hot-key between
consoles so you dont have to wait, say, while you are printing or
texing a large document (OK, I know Dos is supposed to background
printing, but it is more restrictive than proper multitasking :).

(La)TeX has been around for a long time. It will continue to be around
for some time producing good quality output. I think this is a prime
candidate for a solution.

Does ayone know of a way to read tapes written by the NT Tape Backup tool?
I have a tape drive (HP SS T20) on linux which was used a LONG time ago on
an NT box. We would like to access a tape that was made on the box back then
to grab some text files. Any ideas?

You should be able to use any of them. Try LUN 0.
