I took it one step beyond that... I set up ipmasqadm and forwarded all their
scans back at themselves. That way, when they scan me, they end up scanning
themselves... :)

Well, as root, you could kill the lpd command driving the printer (
remember that one of the lpd is the main controller, which should not be

Nope the daemon is still sitting there feeding the printer. It needs to

killall lpd

could do it.
But you have to be root to do it.
You could also look to see if gs is still running and kill it.

To do that, you can add the line
alias ide-tape off
in the /etc/modules.conf file
Also, adding
below st ide-scsi
will force the auto-load of ide-scsi when you access /dev/st0

When it can be done reliably it often is, however the problem with
a fully automated system is it has to work in *all* conditions. A prescription
for a human to follow relies partly on the human spotting when it is failing
to work and doing something sensible.
It is *really* irritating when you can see that the automatics are
making some damn stupid mistake and there is *no* way to fix it. Now which OS
could I possibly have in mind ?

Matroxes are supported fine in 4.x.
Loose red hat (if you do desktop that is, for company requiring support for their
servers RH is the best bet usually, but for desktop better stay with Mandrake, Suse,
Turbo Linux or if you are 'expert/advanced user' Slackware or Root Linux).
If this is too much hassle just reinstall X from source.
Well, before doing hard stuff:
actually it looks from original post, what you need is just to configure X properly:
Get text mode working first (set the distribution to boot into the text mode or edit
/etc/inittab to boot into appropriate runlevel)
then as root run xf86config to get basic working XF86Config file (if you installed
3.3.6 you may even use XF86Setup). Then play with modelines if you want to improve
it (use xvidtune after you bring X up).
Also if you have problems check which XF86Config you X server is using (look into
the log file - with 4.x it is located under /var/log or just lunch X with 'startx
&>startx.log')

Emacs uses a meta key... usually alt works as a meta key as well as an alt
key. I'm not an expert on keyboard layouts, but I can tell you that you
can substitute a press of the esc key for meta in emacs.

I encountered some kind of identical problems. The solution is that only root
can launch OpenOffice. I think that it is written in some doc.
Any way, my solution :
First a little script. I named it "ooffice" and put it in my $HOME. (I adapted
my config to yours.)
===========================================================
#!/bin/sh
#
CMDLINE=$@
# Don't forget the command line.
xhost + >/dev/null
# Allow the connexion of root to X server.
# In fact, we allow everybody but xhost is so tricky...
# That's easier this way.
sudo /usr/local/share/openoffice/soffice $CMDLINE &
echo "OpenOffice launched... Be patient!"
===========================================================
We use sudo, so let's create a config file : /etc/sudoers
============================================================
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
User_Alias FULLTIME = user1, user2, etc
# Put the user(s) you want to be able to launch OpenOffice.
Cmnd_Alias SOFFICE = /usr/local/share/openoffice/soffice
Defaults: FULLTIME !lecture
FULLTIME ALL = NOPASSWD: SOFFICE
============================================================
I am no expert at scripting nor sudo so comments and critics are welcome. I
still understand what I wrote in the script... but do not ask me how I built
that config file for sudo. I certainly RTFM! ;-) All I know is that it works
for me.
Hope it helps.

Correction, when they scan you, you scan them. I know it seems like stupid
semantics, but if you send the scans out, you are the scanner. Well behaved
stacks don't bounce traffic.
You can do a similar thing with iptables' MIRROR target. I played with it
for a while, but decided it was just adding to the problem. Don't get me
wrong, though...it was fun to see a three way handshake between a box and
itself through me :)

that depends on the flavor of serial port you have on the sparc.
the PC is usually DTE, modems and mainframes are DCE. you would use a
null-modem to connect like to like, i.e., DTE to DTE or DCE to DCE.
if the sparc is DCE, then you'll need a straight serial cable.

How can I determine how much physical memory my app is using at a

need to monitor the usage at various times.
I've looked at the /proc/<pid>/maps and /proc/<pid>/stat files.
Unfortunately I don't know how to relate these to physical memory
usage.
Can someone point me in the right direction.

Emacs actually uses the Meta key. If you have a 104-key keyboard with
Windows keys, X may have mapped the left win-key to Meta.

Do you have KDE's "apply colors and fonts to other apps" button checked

Just bought a LaserJet 1200 (_not_ inkjet) for $375US. Does 15 Pages/min,
1200x1200 resolution, 10 sec startup and has 8 megs of memory with hardware
postscript. Works like a dream. Also has a small foot print and is very

I told you I had already done that (actually, I did it correctly).
When I do it your way, I get:

rpm: only one major mode may be specified
valinux:root[/home/jdbeyer]#
It is not enough to copy the manual page; you must understand it.
