Subject: Truly bizarre file corruption after system crash
Date: 13 Jul 2000 11:27:36 +0100

I have Red Hat 6.2 running on a notebook, and last night, for some
reason, the machine locked up tight while I was attempting to do a
suspend-to-RAM (which usually proceeds without any mishap). There was
nothing for it, except to hit the power button. When I restored
power, the machine went through fsck as usual, finally announced that
all was well, and presented me with the gdm login screen.

However, I changed the default runlevel to 3 just after installation a
couple of months ago. On Red Hat, gdm is set to start on runlevel 5.

I checked my /etc/inittab file, and sure enough found the line

id:5:initdefault:

where before the crash it said

id:3:initdefault:

How on earth is it possible that a file can be corrupted in such a
spooky way?

I know that the simplest explanation is that I edited the /etc/inittab
file myself and forgot about it, but I really don't believe that this
is the case. Stupidly, I edited the file to restore the old setting
before thinking to check the timestamp on it.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience?

I don't know how to automate the Windows portion, it's been too long since
I've done any Windows programming, but I know it can be done. What you need
to do is install a generic Postscript print driver on Windows. Have the
Word document "printed" via the Postscript driver to a disk file. On
Linux, run the "ps2pdf" program to convert the Postscript file to a PDF
file. You can get the Postscript file to the Linux system via SAMBA or
just plain ftp.

Sorry I can't give exact instructions, but I hope the above is of at least
some help to you.

Hello,

I have a Linux RH6.2 dual boot PC with two speakers and a Creative
soundblaster 16 PnP (WDM) soundcard. Although this soundcard is not
"supported", I wonder if there is a way to make it work. On NT W2K,
no problems (although it did not work before I connected the speakers).

I have used sndconfig to set up the PC to use SB 16. And this seems to
be successful (plays a sound). The sound services (three kinds) starts
up with status OK at boot time.

However, I am neither able to play mp3 files or other audio formats,
(like .au). Hissing or scratch sounds (basically noise) is all I am
able to hear. I do not use a separate MP3 player.

I have tried several MP3 supported products (front ends), e.g.
mpg123, xmms, splay etc without any luck. For example, xmms seem to
play the MP3 songs (can see the time elapsed etc) but I am not able
to recognise any songs (only low noise).

Any suggestions?

It' s generated automatically when you make a filesystem (ext2).
It is needed when you make a fsck.
Because is there an error with a file or dir that lost the connection to
the root dir. fsck put then put it in lost+found.

It's a problem with your news server. I read this group regularly and
rarely see any spam. If all you see is old messages, maybe your server
isn't keeping up with this newsgroup any more, or has it confused with
another one that gets porno spam.

I gotta application running on a Solaris box. Client is RH6.2 on a
laptop. Get an error when I invoke app:
 /opt/hnm/bin/menu
X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private
resource denied)
Major opcode of failed request: 89 (X_StoreColors)
Serial number of failed request: 922
Current serial number in output stream: 931

I'm told an exceed client doesn't have this problem because their
Xserver uses PseudoColor rather than auto select (which is the cause of
this error).
No doubt Xfree's finest X server can be configed to use PseudoColor.
But how?

TIA

You haven't showed us your partition table. Is the partition that holds
your kernel, the one you're booting from, contained within the first
1024 cylinders of your disk? If not, you have to either repartition or
get a newer version of lilo. The newer versions of lilo get around the
1024-cylinder limit, if your BIOS supports it, or so I've read on this
newsgroup.

It's the directory, in which e2fsck stores used sectors on your disk, which
are not used by any file anymore. I. e. if your filesystem gets corrupt,
you may find parts of your files in this directory.

>How could I disable the creation of this directory everytime I mkfs?

I don't know if you can, at least you shouldn't.
If you're sure you won't need it, you can remove it after creation of
your filesystem.

Try commenting out any line that says "Virtual" in your XF86Config file.
Either that or set Virtual so that it's the same as your actual resolution.

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 12:47:59 GMT

Hi, just a newbie looking to get a few questions cleared up:

1) If I do a make modules and make modules install and all seems to go
fine without any errors, why would it be that when I go to load a
module, or at startup it says that it cant find the modules after a
compile?

2) When you recompile, all the settings that you currently have are
set by default when answering the questions? (Am I totally wrong on
this, my guess is that I am). I ask because last night I recompiled,
all seemed to go great but both my NICs didnt start up. All that I
changed was I took out etherexpress as I dotn have the intel NIC. My
guess is I have to explicitly add the ones I have? I thought the
kernel might load them up off conf.modules or something by itself.

3) I installed ipmasqadm, and portfw is compiled into the kernel, I
followed a "howto" for the syntax in my firewall script. The script
runs without ANY errors, but the port forwarding does not work. This
is on an older kernel RH6.1. I will try at home on the latest kernel
to see if that makes a diff, but I just wanted to know if any of you
had any thoughts. Like does it make a difference where it is placed in
the script? Or can I only have that enabled in the script if I want it
to work and no other security measures?

Guys thanks SOOOO much for your time here. I really appreciate it. I
am a newbie to the penguin, but am hitting it with FULL FORCE and
loving it. Who knows maybe someday Ill be able to help out a newbie in
need.

Thanks again guys

At my company we have a NT Server (fools) running MS Exchange (bigger

me a problem of connecting to the exchange server, and to use it's

Does anyone know if StarOffice 5.2 intergrates with exchange server to

this? Pointers to any reviews or other programs that allow this would be

This is part of basic sysadmin knowledge:
- Create a group for the users (pppusers wil do)
- Put all users in the group (/etc/group)
- install the tools with the group (pppusers)
or chgrp the files after installing.
- make the tool executable by the group (and exclude the world)
        chmod -R ug+X,o-x pppfiles
- If the tool needs to run as a dedicated user or group,
put the Sbit on the user or group (chmod ug+s)

So you are half-way. For these tools best to remove the world rights.

Keep in mind, in German, most English films are re-spoken in German. This
has to match the lip movement somehow and thsi "Furchtbar" is verry close. I
bet, before the movie, no German ever used the word and the translation
peoples invented the translation. If not, it has been done before in a
previous movie.

BTW, In Holland there exists a dictionary which explains al lot of foregin
(english, frensh, german) words by it's Dutch translation and telling that
the dutch word was there before.

With this foobar, I bet the american variant came first but the german shout
the laudest.
