I'm running leafnode, and it's generating tons of logs which I would prefer
to keep out of /var/log/messages. I've edited syslog.conf, so that they are
going to a separate logfile... which works, but the messages are still
going to /var/log/messages.
Any idea how I can completely redirect to a different logfile, and
halt logging to /var/log/messages?

Does anyone have experience with Win4Lin and the COL 2.4 with the 2.2.14
kernel with scsi modules in place? Running the Win4Lin rpm kernel results in
a kernel panic due to mismatched modules scsi-mod, scsi-ide, loop, aic7xxx
etc. (Note: Win4Lin wants to run the "win4lin" kernel (which is about 1/2
the size of the current Caldera kernel) and the aforementioned modules
indicated that they were compiled under another kernel and are "mismatched")
Attempts to work with Trelos have proved painstakingly slow with no answer
to date. Any advice or counsel on this matter would be appreciated. Thanx
in advance.

Ok, something is still wrong. Today my server stoped responding and this
time it didn't hardlock. I logged in localy and noticed that it seems
like one of my NICs crashed. Everything else worked fine, except for the
NIC it uses to connect to my public subnet.
I could ping my 2 private subnets without any problems, but all
connection to my public subnet went down. I tried rmmod:ing the eepro100
driver and insmod:ing it again, but it didn't help, tried running
telinit 1&3, didn't do any good. Rebooted the server and everything
worked fine.
It was eth0 that crashed, 'dmesg | grep 8255' returns:
eth0: OEM i82557/i82558 10/100 Ethernet, 00:D0:B7:2E:F5:C4, IRQ 19.
Primary interface chip i82555 PHY #1.
eth1: Intel PCI EtherExpress Pro100 82557, 00:90:27:BE:8A:ED, IRQ 17.
Primary interface chip i82555 PHY #1.
eth2: Intel PCI EtherExpress Pro100 82557, 00:90:27:91:26:5A, IRQ 16.
Primary interface chip i82555 PHY #1.
So it seems like eth0 isn't exactly the same card...
'cat /proc/interrupts | grep eth' gives:
16: 65 40 IO-APIC-level eth2
17: 625 651 IO-APIC-level eth1
19: 1927 1849 IO-APIC-level eth0
So no overlapping interrupts either and nothing in the logs... go
figure...

I'm about to do a new install onto a older 486 for use as a Firewall
connection share for my home network (4 other Win machines). My
question is which distrib has the best (simplest) ftp install. I have
a cable modem and a provider that uses Dynamic DHCP. (RoadRunner)
Any pointers gladly accepted. I should point out that although I'm a
newbie, I have installed Linux twice before. Slackware once, and
RedHat via ftp once(this was tricky but finally worked once I found a
valid but not to busy mirror).

I'm trying to compile and install Apache 1.3.14 to run under
Sparc/Solaris 2.6 and I'm almost ready to scream. I can configure,
compile, and make the install. It even says that it's successful, but
when I try to run it, I get an error message that there is somekind of a
problem in /etc/httpd.conf file. When I try to go /etc it won't let me
in saying that the file doesn't exist. I've even tried logging in as
root and I still get an error that it doesn't exit. The stuipid part is
that I can see it in my FTP client and if I do ls -l it lists the file
and shows me as owner, with rxw. I GIVE..
Anybody got any ideas?

When we last left off I was trying to figure a way to rename multiple
files changing "-" to ":". The answer in bash:
do i in *-*;mv $i `echo $1 | sed 's/-/:/'`;done
The problem is that the files have spaces in them such as
this is a name.txt
How can I adjust this script to accomidate spaces in the filenames?
I tried
do i in *-*;mv "$i" `echo $1 | sed 's/-/:/'`;done
but I still get the same error about multiple files.

Does RH7.0 include a recent modutils? (My Debian "unstable" system

Sounds a bit complicated, why not just do a tail -f on an output file.
Also I never leave a console logged in as root unless I'm sat right there

I have:
/etc
/etc/httpd
/etc/httpd/links to various config files:
access.conf conf httpd.conf logs magic modules srm.conf
(conf isn't a link it's a directory)
/etc/httpd/conf/ And in here I have:
access.conf httpd.conf httpd.conf.rpmsave magic-dist srm.conf-dist
access.conf-dist httpd.conf-dist magic srm.conf
>From what I remember you have to start httpd as root otherwise nobody else
will be able to access the server (such as yourself through the browser).
How are you starting it. I get this message:
Usage: ./httpd {start|stop|restart|reload|status}
I also have to go to the directory that contains the executable, because
(in my install), httpd isn't in the path, it gets put in /etc/rc.d/init.d
I don't know what your equivelant will be over there. So to start it I
use:
# cd /etc/rc.d/init.d
# ./httpd start
Hope some of that helps.

If you want to change your shell to csh then just do this:
chsh -s csh
For more info: man chsh
I think this is what you want...right?
/etc/profile is used by bash and ksh only. csh uses /etc/csh.cshrc and
/etc/csh.login Note that these are global config. files. Local config file
for csh is in $HOME/.cshrc

Bill,
Have you looked into the ps and top commands. Also the GUI versions for
GNOME and kde I think are gtop and ktop. These tools can give you some
detail of a processes memory usage.
However, If you really enjoy hacking through the /proc tree then I suggest
looking for books on Linux internals or Linux kernel. O'Reilly's "LINUX
Device Drivers" may have some info, but it was written for programmers,
not admins.
Also, if you are familiar with C you could look at the source code for ps
and top to see where they get the information from.
Good luck,
