I have a handheld PC IBM z50 connected to my LinBox using getty for ttyS0

Any special effects (highlighting or color) on the output throws off the
alignment
Sometimes when the output is almost a page (or longer) it suddenly stops
in mid-line, so I have to press Enter and the prompt comes up. Maybe the
correct term is Wordwrap. When I get online on the mainbox and I use w3m
to surf the web in text mode, it's as if somebody stripped all of the
Carriage Returns, so I have to quit. The prompt appears immediately after
(in mid-line) but the wordwrap wont happen until I get some long output
again.

I *think* slackware can be "compressed" quite a bit.

Or try MuLinux .... it needs a bit of tweaking to get

Subject: PPP Connection Problems
Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 14:30:03 GMT

I followed the instructions at the following URL to connect to my ISP,
WorldShare.Net:

http://www.worldshare.com/FAQs/linuxfaq.htm

I encountered the following errors during my only 2 connection attempts.
In both attempts, I ran kppp from an xterm so I could see any stdout/
stderr info.

1. Attempt # 1
I immediately get an error at the xterm command-line indicating that
the ppp0 interface does not exist. Once the connection is terminated,
kppp says it timed out waiting for pppd to startup. Also, the following
   info in /var/log/messages:

   insmod: insmod: insmod ppp0 failed
kernel: PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialling)
   kernel: PPP line discipline registered.

2. Attempt # 2
This was immediately after attempt # 1. Info in /var/log/messages:

I have no idea where this remote address of "32.97.113.122" is coming
from. I know it is not in /etc/resolv.conf. I don't know what other files
to check. I do have a network card that is currently attached to any
network (i.e. I am hoping for DSL in the very near future). I don't know
if the NIC makes any diff in the setup, but here are the /var/log/messages
info for the NIC:

kernel: 3c59x.c:v0.99H 11/17/98 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html

kernel: MII transceiver found at address 0, status 786d.
kernel: Enabling bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives.

Well, that's all the info I can think of to provide. Please post or e-mail
me if you need any more info. Oh, I guess I should also mention that I can
connect to WorldShare.Net from Windows 98 SE, from the same PC.

Thx in advance !!

Have you tried to enclose the file name in double inverted commas??

This usually solves any problems that I get when I'm using linux.

To install Redhat on /dev/hdb you will need to do a workstation installation
where you can tell the setup program where you wish to install Redhat to.

Or you can choose to do a custom installation and select all of the server
packages that you wish to install.

I doubt that it would be possible as the screen resolution in text mode would
make for a huge movie screen or it would be massively pixelated, OR you will
have to find a program that will load a graphics display that you can run the
movies in. Then there are sound considerations that you will need to think
about.

Subject: redhat 6.2 upgrade breaks ppp to att
Date: 14 Jul 2000 14:38:30 GMT

I upgraded my laptop from RH 5.2 to 6.2 (actually, I did a
a fresh install) and the script I've been using for months
to get a PPP connection with ATT Worldnet no longer works. I
now get the error: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests.

The script and other settings are those given at
http://www.wurd.com/eng/setup/dialers/linux.html

I reinstalled 5.2, and I can connect with no problem. I
did another fresh install of 6.2 and back came the LCP timeout
errors.

Note: this is the standard 6.2, none of the upgrades/updates
have been applied yet (because I can't get online from the
machine). I've recompiled the kernel and the pcmcia stuff
and can dial out and connect (non ppp). I'm now stuck.

I've seen lots of posts (on redhat-ppp, dejanews, etc) but no
answers. Any help greatly appreciated; I'll post a summary
if I receive email responses.

Subject: Can't start X windows anymore (X Font Server problem)
Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 15:47:46 +0100

I really hope someone can help me with this one...

Yesterday I had a Linux-capable laptop that happily booted up and entered X
Windows and KDE and worked wonderfully.

This morning I fired up the laptop to check a demo that I was due to give
later in the day and Linux won't get into X Windows becuase of the
following message:

FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno=111
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error
could not open default font 'fixed'

I've no idea what this means or indeed how to fix it! Does anyone know what
I need to do?

The last thing I was doing when the machine was OK was working with GIMP on
some logo graphics. This wouldn't allow me to save anything and I later
discovered that my disk usage was up to 100%! (I'm not sure how the disk has
filled up - is there a temporary GIMP file hanging around somewhere? If so,
where?) Whether this has contributed to the current problem I don't know.

I hope someone knows how to get my box running again.

Thanks,

Mark

This will not work, because " " tells the *shell* to do special

passing the contents to the command (e.g., "rm").

Why not just get ssh installed on both ends and use scp? Or even better

Further more, do the packets in a network connection under X protocol

Easy to say that can I hear songs with my local sound card playing from a

It's because now I can't.
I doubt the X protocol as I know the RDP in win2000 doesn't contain 'sound'.
Please share your any experience or knowledge with me.

I've run MCC-1.0+ and MCC-2.0+ distributions on 383/486-DLCs for
years. This distribution was developed by Owen LeBlanc at the
Manchester Computing Center. The MCC's will fit on about half-
a dozen diskettes. Paul Gortmaker had a web-page dealing with
small kernels, mine were < 300k: really.

Anyway try:

    search for "MCC-1.0" sans "s

     or "linuxlite"

Paul purloined that last one from you know who :-)

Subject: Readhat domain name email setup
Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 15:42:41 GMT

I am trying to setup an admin email box for a customer website. I want
all mail for customer-domain-name.com to be delivered to home-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

On DEC UNIX there is a file that associates domain names to email
accounts. This file sends all email for a particular domain to the home
directory.

On DEC UNIX, the name of this file is
/etc/virtusertable.txt

How is email for a domain name setup on Redhat Linux?
Is there an equivalent file to /etc/virtusertable.txt on Redhat Linux?

Your comments, suggestions, tips are welcome.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Subject: Flash 4 Plugin from Macromedia can't work with Netscape 4.73
Date: 14 Jul 2000 15:40:33 GMT

Hi all,

I'm running netscape 4.73 (rpm 4.73-6mdk) on Linux-Mandrake 7.1. I
downloaded the Flash 4 Plugin from Macromedia website and install it in my
system. Netscape can recognize the existence of the plugin (from "about
Plug-ins" menu). However, when I access flash powered homepages (like
Macromedia homepage), netscape freezes. Anyone has a workaround to this
problem? or I have to wait a new version of flash plugin from Macromedia?

Thanks in advance.

Your X has been configured to use the fontserver xfs, but It looks
like the font server isn't running. Do a `ps aux | grep xfs' to see
if it's there. If not, the way that you start it depends on your
distribution - `/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start' is the command for Red
Hat. This is normally started at boottime, so it's strange that it's
not running - if your disk is full, then lots of processes may have
problems starting because they write files to /tmp or elsewhere.
